The ethics of world PvP and pet battles.

As some of you may know, the mechanics of pet battling with respect to other players. A player who is in a pet battle is effectively blind - they can hardly see anything around the pet battle. If they have PvP enabled, they can be attacked, but they gain a 50% damage reduction for 3 seconds. Hardly enough when the victim is a 60-70 player with no PvP experience who has been jumped by a 90 rogue in Cavers of Time in Tanaris. After being ganked multiple times while supposedly not flagged, I have to bring up this question.
Is it really necessary? I know it's fun to kill other people, but ambushing someone while they're trying to capture a battle pet seems downright mean.

I don't pet battle so I am unaware if there is currently any mechanic or bug that actually flags you for the duration of that battle.
But otherwise make sure you are not flagged.
I don't think it has to do with pet battles. Instead, I have been automatically flagged unexpectedly in certain zones, such as the blasted lands or caverns of time in Tanaris. And before you ask, I am not in a PvP server. It's a real pain to be killed by a much-higher level player while in the fight to capture an infinite whelpling (cool and hard-to-find pet) that you entered with no flag.

Ah but if you are grouped up with a realID friend on a pvp server, there is a chance that you will be placed on his server rather then your own; I've had that happen before. There is also the small chance you had a pvp flagged quest in your log too.
As for 'ethics' regarding world pvp: There is none. It's kill or be killed, and the gankers live to murder people.

If your flagged ESPECIALLY if your in a low level zone, i take it your ganking some ally.
That's what most people think, Not that you're a target, it's barely worth the honor at all.

Count me in that group.
I agree with Mumper on this one. It's a tired saying by now, but you are playing World of
War
craft after all. Back in the day, when the open world wasn't so sparsely populated, dealing with world PvP was a reality and it's what distinguished PvP servers from PvE servers. People knew that no matter what they were doing, at any time, they were potentially in danger. It gave a fun edge to the game.
Sure griefing sucks, but people dealt with it for years without complaining nearly as much as people do today. People have become so accustomed to having the open world to themselves that, with the advent of CRZ, we see how spoiled they have become.
Rather than sticking to the old wisdom that playing on a PvP server is harder, they've forgotten why PvP servers existed in the first place, and would rather complain after the fact.
In other words, deal with it. Many people have before you, and after a solid 7 years the mechanics of world PvP have not changed. That should be a nod to the fact that it's precisely what the developers want. On that token, it's precisely what many players want -- those who remember vanilla PvP and chose to roll PvP servers back then.

Neither criteria you described was filled, yet I still get auto-flagged on a PvE server.

Cross-realm zones are experiencing a bug currently -- from what I hear -- that's causing that. It's not the intended behavior.
