Aye, and a ban like this can affect your actual account; nothing like putting in who knows how many man of hours of work and losing it all permanently due to stupidity.
Also: If you have to ask the question 'Can I/my friend be banned for this?' the answer 99% of the time is yes, yes you can.

If you have to ask if you can be banned then the answer is going to be that yes you can and will eventually get banned.

I see what you did there...
Of course, there is the chance for a 1% error in the calculations.

I truly don't understand why people would want to do this kinda thing on a MMO.... If you want to do stuff like that. Single player games... "Skyrim" is your best friend for things like this.

Technically, if you ever read the End User License Agreement, Blizzard explicitly reserves the rights to permanently ban any account at any time for any reason. So if they don't like what your doing, then yes, you will be banned if it ever comes to their attention. And you have no recourse.
Blizzard frowns on something as harmless as people using exploits to explore unfinished parts of the gameworld, frequently resulting in temporary punishments. But what you/your friend did is both exploiting to get ahead in the game (which is to say, cheating at the game)
and
exploiting to circumvent the pricing policy (that is, cheating them out of payment for services rendered). Do you think a restaurant would welcome you back after you pulled a dine and dash? If Blizzard catches the culprit, I can't imagine how the player in question can talk their way out of a permanent ban. The only real question is whether they'll go the extra measure to drop any other accounts registered to the same identity as the starter edition one.

But once you're banned, you will be
freeeeeeeeeeeee~~~
That said, as I'd personally seen through the years, and as others had noted on this forum, there are some bannable offenses going on that folks claim "nothing is being done about." You know, like that dude spouting racial slurs on /trade, botting, going directly against bliz's terms of service guidelines about using names, etc. Technically I think stuff
is
being done about all this, but gradually/eventually. There was one time back in I think TBC that my account was nearly suspended because I'd been hacked (imagine my surprise logging in to find my main waiting on the boat at Ratchet, wearing nothing but his Sporegarr tabard). From the standpoint of others, then, it looks like there are people doing blatantly prohibited stuff for months unscathed. Maybe they'll be banned eventually, I don't know. I can see how glitches could be interesting or exciting but I wouldn't mess with them just in case. I don't think there's a need to kind of gang up on this dude, though, his offense isn't as bad as that racial slur guy for example. I'm certain you all would like a level 40 mount at level 1 as well, haha.

Seriously isn't better that this person just gets banned...do we really want to add people like this to the WoW population.
Not even concerned about the act itself, just wants to know how severe the punishment will be.
Like a would be bank robber who wants to know if his stolen money will still be there after he gets out of prison.
OP...your growing up just fine.

That is a little harsh, people especially younger people make mistakes.
Look at sites like Gamefaqs for example, ways around and glitches, exploits, cheat codes for every game. isn't it understandable that someone from a console generation might not think about the implications of doing that in a MMORPG?
I can see where honest mistakes could be made in this scenario, and in some situations a troll who consciously makes the decision to disrupt, is a far worse thing.
He's well aware of his(friends) actions...that's not a mistake or he wouldn't have asked.
Like mom saying no snacks before dinner and then wondering if you will get in trouble if she notices the cookie crumbs.
We got stop pandering theses kids...sometimes they need to hear it harsh..so it sticks in their memory.
I'm not going to play father perfect here, but cheating is cheating....there's no degree of it.
If your going to do it then accept the consequences if your caught.
Don't come to us looking for answers...go to the source your cheating and ask them since they are the ones who will deem out punishment, not us.
