I have to say right here out of frustration, that I went to Feathermoon thinking it would have RP. But it doesn't, its full of unfriendly loners, has many guilds with obsessions on having the largest e-pens, PvPflag-griefers, and RP is so rare that it might as well be dead, or at least in a permanent vegetative state. I was young and foolish as a player back then, but now I want to move on. The problem is, is that I'm still a relative newbie. I started late into Cata, and I have never transfer realms before, so I want to do this right and not waste what little valuable money I have.
I've done my research, very in-depth, and have chosen Wyrmrest or Earthen Ring as my prime options, for being very high population, have great Alliance/Horde ratios, many maxed out veteran players, and relatively healthy Auction Houses. If anyone has any other great suggestions, please tell!
I'd love to go to Ravenholdt for their close-knit friendly community, but it has PvP, which although I have nothing against, I am not a fan of either, and would like to stay in PvE. Not to mention it seems that the realm is very low on population now, as the years have past, and I am still a very new RPer, who would like some good general experience before I do any events that require great coordination/Rp/lore knowledge. Plus, I just hate being on low population servers, and actually liked when Bliz did cross-realms for horribly empty zones. (that is another topic I'd not like to get into though)
Another thing I take into deep consideration is Raid activity. I don't expect hardcore realm-firsts on RP realms, but I'd eventually like to join a guild that is very active in both current end-game PvE content and does regular RP events.
Lag and in-game clocked Time Zones for US aren't a big issue anymore to me, but if the data center is in New York, I might have problems, so please don't suggest realms that are there (in case you don't know, the Time Zone does not always reflect where the server is physically located) I got my info on server locations from
http://www.wowpedia.org/US_realm_list_by_datacenter
, but if that is outdated, please let me know.
Other considerations are mental maturity, lack of drama, lack of uptight prideful elite RPers, friendly players, even cross-faction interaction (outside of in-game character personalities who may hate each other), and in-general, high RP activity across the board.
As you can see, I'm fairly serious about this, I don't want to have a bad time again. :(
I am still deeply conflicted as to which realms (Wyrmrest/Earthen Ring) I should go to though, so if any one is from them for a good amount of time, your experience would be invaluable to me! If anyone has any other realm they think better, please advise!

I'm on Earthen Ring and regularly see people out and about doing RP events. However, those are usually friend or guild groups.
So if you are interested in this, definitely ask around on the official forums for those realms and find out from them.
As for: I don't expect hardcore realm-firsts on RP realmsWhy in the Naaru wouldn't you? All realms, no matter what type they are, have hard core guilds....

I was using that for contrasting emphasis, I didn't write it to be read in a strict literal sense, much like how you don't mean being in Naaru. What I meant is I don't expect the guilds on the realm, to be like those in US-Illidan.

See my signature.
I'll admit, I haven't seen a website like that for a realm in a long time. It looks very professional and well maintained. Do the other realms have their own? How'd ER in particular get it?

I know this wasn't one of your three possible RP solutions, but if you don't mind a little PVP and Alliance gank fests at Pandaren daily spots, I've found more RP on Emerald Dream than I have on any other RPPVP server I've tried.
I had switched around a lot on RPPVP servers, including Venture Co., Ravenholdt, Lightninghoof, and Twisting Nether, and I found all of them to be kind of lacking. For whatever reason, Emerald Dream worked out as a nice fit for me. Partly due to xrealm and partly to local activity, I'm able to find regular, active RPers in Silvermoon every night around 9:00-10:00 PM EST (and usually later), and there's three major (and active) RP-oriented guilds that are regularly looking for new members, as well as more established ones that are active, but don't seem to be looking for new members. Some examples might include the Phoenix Highguard, the Bloodstorm Assembly, Guardians of the Dawn, and there's two other something-Tribes that I can't remember at the moment. Just last weekend, there was a major RP Blood Elf get-together on Quel'danas. It was refreshing, entertaining, and I managed to hook up with some old acquaintances I hadn't seen in some time.
I think xrealm is definitely helping in regards to finding off-realm RPers. I see regulars from other realms most nights.
I hope this is somehow helpful as you weigh your considerations and good luck!

Thank you for the in-depth answer! Sadly, although I have played Horde for a long time and deeply loved it, I want to stay Alliance for now for simplicity, though in the future I'd love to roll one again, maybe after Bliz finally updates the race models! But that could still be a very long time.
As for PvP, I can't do it. I'm sure it has its own flavor to show great immersion, but I rarely ever like it myself. I already have enough griefers on my realm, and I can only imagine it for the War Zone in 5.2. I wouldn't be able to take it. I'm just a PvEer at heart. Maybe in the future when I consider myself a veteran, I'll look into RP-PvP realms.

Just did more research on Moon Guard. I totally forgot about the ERP, hoooooly crap. So yeah, I removed it. If anyone has a good third option, I'm open to suggestion.

ERP exists on all RP realms...and really, it's incredibly easy to ignore; don't let that influence your choices.

Yes, I know, but there is a reason MG is famous for it. I still can't believe I forgot about that. But, it does influence my choice, just like how there is griefing in every realm, but more in others. Although relatively easy to ignore, I'd rather not deal with it in the first place. And I'd just like it to be a very rare thing, especially as I visit Goldshire fairly often.

It's only famous because of trolls and morons.
