Gap between classes where DPS is concerned

Am I wrong In thinking that the gaps between classes should be decreased to make all of them a viable option for raids? There seems to be such a large discrepancy that some people might be drawn towards the higher DPS classes. Arcane mage is a great example, it is towards the top if not at the top, has a fairly simple rotation relative to other classes, making it much more desirable for those who want to maximize damage. During 5.1 there looked to be 20-30k difference between the top ranking DPS and the bottom ranking DPS, which is massive. Not to mention the ability to stay within attack range is much easier for ranged than melee who can become out of range if the boss moves a few yards away.
If blizzard was truly focused on balancing the classes they would be more focused on making DPS fairly close to even among all the classes.
Am I missing something here or am I on the right track?

I don't think you're
wrong
, but, in my opinion, I don't think you're looking at it in a diverse way. DPS isn't the only thing that matters. There are other functions of classes that are quite helpful that don't just spam DPS.

From what I understand, the combined changes to the Arcane specilization have decreased its DPS output by about 20-25%. I've heard this from a number of my friends who have exclusively played mages for some time, and they've all given an answer somewhere in that continuum.
IMO, the combined slows, crit bonuses, and cc benefits of Frost specilization--in addition to Frostbolt's increased damage and improved debuff in 5.2--makes it a much easier DPS build, despite whatever Noxxic might say.

This is very true, but take into consideration the fact that most melee characters also dual-function as much better punishment-takers than most melee classes. Or at least mages. Even with Ice Barrier, it only takes a couple hits to take me down in BG's. (If we're including PvP discussion here.) In PvM, this is still largely true, with the exception that bad AI allows easier escapes. This doesn't really matter, though, if you keep aggro. What melee characters lose in DPS they make up for in other functions, IMO.
That said, I do think a little bit of a DPS jump would be good for some melee specilizations.

They're valid observations and need to be discussed. But from my viewpoint as an exclusively-mage player, I think there's some other issues you should take into consideration. If we're going to increase the DPS for melee characters, then ranged characters should get more survivability in gear, stats, or more enduring absorbing buffs.

I disagree. Anything that a class gains in versatility, it should lose in efficacy and vice versa. If a Shadow priest can do as much DPS as a mage or warlock, but the priest can heal whereas mages and warlocks can't, then why in God's name would anyone roll a mage or warlock? If a Windwalker monk can do as much DPS as a rogue, but monks can tank and heal whereas rogues can't, then why would anyone play a rogue? If shamans can do as much DPS as hunters, but shamans can heal and hunters can't... do you see where I'm going with this?
