Hey all,
This has probably been asked before, but I couldn't find a thread related to this. Anyways, what's your opinion of player homes and guild bases?
Thanks

I played LOTRO. Had a house and a guild house. Never used them. Nobody's got time for that.
Maybe the Farming phasing is a prelude to it, but in my guild's case it was just a glorified trophy case.

Not needed. We have cities that have AH's, banks and inns etc. Never really far from a city wherever you are in Azeroth/Outlands

Actually there are about 400 topics on this...and there is a search bar right there at the top. (use the "search forums" one...not the big one...that is a database search.
But, I will just say this...it has been discussed
ad nauseam
, and the consensus seems to be, that many players would love to have it, but Blizzard has indicated it will likely never happen. They want players out in the world, not in personal instanced areas. It is also a logistical nightmare, because for you to have your own little personal space, each one would somewhat be its own instance. And 10 million little instances = a metric crap-ton of server space.
I, like many, think it would be great. But I am not holding my breath for it, nor is it anything to "fight" fir...Blizz knows we would like to have it, but has all but said "ain't gonna happen".

That is a really silly reason for not adding something. There's like 40% of stuff in this game that is not "needed" but they still got added because they're fun, and the game is just richer for them (Such as achievements, titles, pets, battle-pet minigame, etc).
Just because player homes are not "needed" doesn't mean there's no place for them. And they don't need to have an AH/Bank/etc to be useful, as long as its a personal home you can customize, its still lots of fun.

They've changed their minds about a lot of stuff, they could change their minds about this as well.
They want players out in the world, not in personal instanced areas.
It can be accomplished in 2 ways, have your home placed inside your racial capital, and have your home NOT have any of the indispensable necessities, such as AH/Bank/Trainer/Stablemaster/etc.
It is also a logistical nightmare, because for you to have your own little personal space, each one would somewhat be its own instance. And 10 million little instances = a metric crap-ton of server space.
The farm proved that's not the case. Player homes don't really necessitate their own instanced area. A simple personal phasing like the one used in sunsong ranch can get the job done just as well.
I, like many, think it would be great. But I am not holding my breath for it
You should. Blizzard said they're impressed with how successful sunsong ranch was, and they're thinking of expanding this idea in future expansions, so the idea of a personal home, isn't so crazy or impossible.
Blizz knows we would like to have it, but has all but said "ain't gonna happen".
And now that they have the new tech to make it happen (as illustrated by sunsong ranch) they seem to be changing their minds.
I for one, would love to have a personal home, I don't care if its in the middle of nowhere, I don't care if it doesn't have any of the bare necessities, all I care is that its there, and its mine. If it has a portal to orgrimmar/stormwind, then even better.

i think there should be player housing AND guild housing in the game. guild houses could be placed in the main capital cities. alliance can use the park and for horde anywere in orgrimar(seriously that place is a mess). I think we should have a range of choices as to were the player houses should be(like have a certain spot in every so place like eastern plaguelands and elwynn forest). The system could be simple like the player farms we have but with a much wider options like trophies and a stable to check out some of your mounts. though with the limited space in the game the houses would have to be small but big enough to be enjoyable. the player housing phasing can be easy since we already have it with the farm though as far as guild housing there might be a complication or two. might have a wall surounding the place so you cant see it and you have to enter a password tto phase into the guilds kingdom

oh and blizzard has done player housing before, screenshots of it have ben found on GM island, but the project was scrapped. though there is a high chance of player housing coming to wow in the future. after all it is a big aspect that most mmo's have.

though there is a high chance of player housing coming to wow in the future. Not really, since Blizzard has been pushing to get people out in to the world and not just hanging around in locations.

And they took it back. People responded really well to the farm, and they've gone on record saying that they wanna expand that idea on future expansions, now that they have the tech to make it happen. Just because you get a home doesn't mean you wont go out into the world. If the home is just a cosmetic feature, with no essential services (Such as AH, bank, trainer, vendor, inn, etc) then its not gonna confine the playerbase to a single spot.

I think the concept of a character house is not a bad one, but -in keeping with Blizzard's historical design concepts- it would likely have to be acquired through a quest or a quest chain. It might even be possible to acquire more than one entrance location, usable in a similar way as mounts, pulled from a menu.
So many questions build from the desire though. Why a house? What purpose would it serve? What would it contain? What would happen to the items inside when you exit the dwelling? Who could enter the dwelling-could you have guests by grouping with them? What interactions might be available inside a dwelling? What furnishings might it include? Would the furnishings be customizable via quests, or via vendors, or via crafting?
What about interactions with the area surrounding the house? While inside, would you be able to look out a window and see outside happenings or see a simulated representation of the approximate terrain? Would there even be windows to the outside world?
How would the addition of such a thing add to the game? Without being able to share your home with parties, would it be much fun at all? Would you be able to earn portal stones/mirrors/etc. to place in your home by doing certain questlines? If so, these should NOT be account bound, soulbound.
It is not just the technological question of a miniature instance or a phased area, but also the question of purpose.

As Magician said this topic has been discussed ad nauseum and personnally I dont really care either way. I would rather see a lot more things to do at 90 then a silly house to pile gear and crap in.
If you really want a house go get the reins of the travelers mount and pretend it is an RV, then have all the role play tea parties you want.
