You don't; that's a Horde location and the faction guards are killing you because you shouldn't be there.

The ? means the monster is
at least
10 levels higher than you. Could be a few times more actually.
For boss monsters, they always show ? because regardless of your level, they act as though they are higher level; of course, bosses that are located in dungeons much lower than your content level will be easier to kill because you have significantly more HP and firepower. What I mean by act higher is your Hit score. When you mouse over Hit, it tells you values based on monster type, and bosses, regardless of their true level, behave as though you need the highest value for Hit.

Generally, the best way is to follow the quest chains. They lead you to appropriate zones as you level. If you are looking for an AddOn solution, try Cromulent, which is on Curse.com. It gives zone information like levels, dungeons, fishing, mining, etc.
Are you playing on a PvP realm, or a PvE realm?

For Alliance players, the
Hero's Call Boards
in major cities will always provide you with quests leading to an appropriate-level zone. The Horde equivalent are the
Warchief's Command Boards
.
On the search results I linked, click the one for the city you're in to see a map where it is located.

Beyond following the quest chains and visiting the Call Board, you can simply open you map, right click to zoom out to the continent view (then world view to swtich continents) and mouse hover over a zone. It will display the level range of each zone.
When you reach the end of a zone's quests (or sometimes at other points) you'll receive a 'breadcrumb' quest to take you to the next questing zone.
As regards further purchases, the Battlechest contains Outland (60-70) and Northrend (70-80)as well as the 1-60 zones, so you are good for a while. The next purchase would an upgrade to Cataclysm (80-85), then Mists of Pandaria (85-90).
If you're still shy of level 40 and tinkering around in Stranglethorn, take the boat from Booty Bay to Ratchet (Southern Barrens), then ride down to Dustwallow Marsh and quest/kill to hit 40. From that point go to Thousand Needles and head for the Speedbarge which you will see clearly if you've taken the road south from Dustwallow to Thousand Needles. The zone quests start there.
Alternately you can head north to Western Plaguelands, quest/kill to 40 and then go east to Eastern Plaguelands. The zone quests here start with Fionas Caravan which will be on the right just as you enter the zone. Actually this is probably best as the levelling flow from this point will lead you inexorably south to the Blasted Lands which contain the portal to Outland and your 60-70 questing experience.
If you take the 'go to Thousand Needles' advice you'll end up in Silithus eventually and then have to hoof it back to the Eastern Kingdoms to enter the portal which is no biggie I suppose, but you have 2 options and completely separate paths to lead you to level 60.
Guilds recruit in a number of different ways depending on the type of guild it is. Most guilds accept players of any level or experience. In addition to the guild finder utility, they advertise in the trade channel in major cities and on the realm subforum of the official forums. The type of guild you are probably looking for will advertise as a levelling/social guild. If you hang out in Stormwind for a bit during prime playing hours I'm sure you'll see numerous recruiting ads. For a more social experience, try out a higher level guild (25 is the cap) with a larger roster.

The only upgrade you should need from the war chest is Mists of Pandaria, assuming that you could create either a Goblin or Worgen character. If you can, that means you have everything up until and including Cataclysm. It is not enough that you can see other people playing those races; you have to be able to make one yourself.
You do not actually need to make such a character, only that it is possible.

Wrong. The Battlechest does not contain Cataclysm.

I wasn't sure, which is why I suggested checking to see if Worgen and Goblins were available; if not, then the OP would need to buy Cataclysm.
I wasn't wrong, if you reread what I said.

I wasn't being antagonistic. You said "The only upgrade you should need from the Warchest is Mists of Pandaria". That is incorrect. You cannot skip Cataclysm. All players regardless of which expansion they have purchased up to can create Worgen, Goblins and Pandaren. The mere ability to create a Worgen or Goblin does not in and of itself give access to Cataclysm zones.
The purchasing order remains: Battlechest->Cataclysm->Mists of Pandaria.

Ah, I didn't realize that without Cataclysm or Mists, you could not create Worgen, Goblins, or Pandaren. I was fairly certain that without the expansions, you could not create characters of those races. My error!
I was thinking that way, because, if I recall, without BC, you could not create Draenei or Blood Elves, and without Wrath, you could not create Death Knights.

They changed it, Myrr.
You can now create any race regardless of expansion key. Class choice, however, requires the appropriate expansion (which is just MoP for Monk, since WotLK now comes with the base game).
