Has anything been said about how long this expansion will last ? Up until MoP it was 2 years per release but that seems to have been changed with this expansion.

Well, yes they do tend to have a 2-year difference between each expansion. Why would that change? If it took longer, people would get bored of continuously repeating the same content like what was complained about with the Dragon Soul.
The real question is SoO really the last raid? If 5.3 is released in the next month, and SoO 2-3 months after, then we'd just have one long Dragon Soul-type repeat. What we need is another raid that might lead into the next expansion like The Ruby Sanctum did for Cataclysm. So maybe have up to 5.6? (Pure speculation!)

Blizzard has stated that they intend to release content much more quickly now. So, I believe that is what the OP is curious about... if the next expansion is going to be sooner rather than later. MoP came out Sept 25, 2012. If they follow the current trend they could have a new expansion out as earlier as the 2nd Quarter of 2014. If it's much later than that then it'd still be in the same trend as previous expansion release dates.
Vanilla
: November 23rd, 2004
BC
: January 16th, 2007 -- ~2 yrs, 2 months
Wrath
: November 13th, 2008 -- ~1 yr, 10 months
Cataclysm
: December 7th, 2010 -- ~2 yrs, 1 month
MoP
: September 25th, 2012 -- ~1 yr, 10 months
If they do truly escalate their releases... based solely on the rapid fire patches of MoP it seems likely... it would possibly be feasible to have the next one around March '14? Just speculating of course but doesn't seem that hard to believe.
Perhaps someone else could shed a theory though but to my knowledge none of the previous expansions have had a patch #.4 -- Aren't we usually done at #.3? MoP is probably going to be the first though I think because I don't believe the conclusion to this expansion is slated for the already testing 5.3.(##RESPBREAK##)2060##DELIM##Sas148##DELIM##

Was BC really just 22 months? o.O
It felt (positively) longer - while WotLK felt longer in a negative way :P

Vanilla went up to #.12 (with ZG in #.7 and AQ in #.9 for example) and BC went up to #.4 (Sunwell). As for MoP, it's already been confirmed that 5.4 will be the Siege of Orgrimmar and most likely the final (big) patch as it'll finish the story of Garrosh who was the "main" villain of MoP.

But there were hints about 5.5 too...

This pretty much crystallizes my train of thought. If 5.4 (SoO) comes out in July then either the next X-pac comes out in Nov 2013 +/- a month or we quite possibly are looking at another year of MoP which means either Dragonsoul zzzz's or a heck of a lot more Mop content that we have not even heard a whisper about as yet.

All speculation I know but as Sas said bliz have said that they want new expansions delivered quicker , my guess is a Sept release of 5.4 with 6.0 ( pre expansion patch ) in march 2014 and expansion launch in April.
If you take into account that
1) Bliz has also said they believe lvl 100 would be a nice finishing level ( still can add more content in either patches etc )
2) I read somewhere That the new mmo they are working on is 3-4 years away ( cannot remember where I read this ) then 18 month expansions seem to fit in nicely ?
Even in the Q & A thread on this forum they have said that they are not going to delay 5.4 simply to extend the life of MoP , which to me says that they are pretty well advanced on the next expansion already
As I said pure speculation form little things I have read and probably well off the mark , but if I am right then remember where you read it --lol

But I thought they wouldn't release an expansion until it was actually announced where it traditionally has been - Blizzcon.
And isn't Blizzcon in November? So they probably wouldn't release the next expansion before then at least, right?
I would imagine that they would be announcing the next expansion at Blizzcon , but that still fits in with my timeline of an April release

The chances of a release from Jan 1 thru the 1st week of Sept* are small. They want to have the highest sub numbers of the year when their fiscal year comes to a close. All WoW releases to date have done that. Imo that implies a 5.4 target date of the first of July or August which with a minimum 3 month patch life gives us Oct, Nov, or early Dec for whatever comes after that. Of course this assumes that the only added raid will be SoO. If there is more, all bets are off.
*any sub which starts from the 2nd week of Sept thru the end of business on Dec 31st counts as a live sub for the end of the year financials.

2.0.1 Patch is dated Dec 5, 2006 and that's what I went by but you're partially correct. It is obvious that BC was a Q4 release that missed its original date. My point was that they would not deliberately plan to release a new X-pac before the 2nd week of September and your point does not disprove that.

We can't use previous expansions as benchmarks when Blizzard has stated they intend to release the next ones more rapidly.

Yes and no. Yes they will still try to have expansions in the 4th quarter for the business reason I gave and no the 2 year life span of releases may well be a thing of the past which speaks to the more rapid development of new product you mentioned.

Kind of does, since they did release a expac in a different quarter; Blizzard does their best to not release things before they are ready, so if it's needed, they'll have it come out in whichever of the quarters it needs to come out in.

I just doubt they're going to release it in the fourth quarter of this year and if they wait until the following year then they're not doing the expansions any faster than previously. A new expansion is usually on the PTR for at least 4-6 months (I believe) before being released and we still have 5.4 to go through it's paces as well as 5.3 to be released/played.
Of course there is always the possibility that their goal to release expansions more rapidly will just not succeed.(##RESPBREAK##)2060##DELIM##Sas148##DELIM##

A few months sure...but a year of the same raid? Not so much.
