Welcome to Azeroth! :)
I believe that the file size of the WoW game is about 21GB, so the amount of time to download the game will depend on your internet connection.
As for beginner guides...here are a few places to get you started:
- Wowhead is a comprehensive site with a ton of guides, information about items, classes, NPC's and so on. The forums are also a great place to ask any questions that you may have.
- There is a
New Player Help and Guides
section on the official Battle.net site
- Battle.net also has a
Game Guide
available
-
WoW Insider's WoW Rookie Guide
has a wealth of information
I have my own website, see the link in my signature, that may also provide you with more useful information as well.
There is a plethora of information available, so it will be easy to get overwhelmed and frustrated at times. When this happens, remember that this is a game and it is supposed to be a fun and enjoyable experience. After all, you are spending your hard earned money to be able to play :) so play
WoW the way you want to and above all else HAVE FUN!
EDIT: Forgot to add
World of WarcraftBeginner’s Guide
from Battle.net

25 Gb, do the math.

You don't have to download the entire game to start playing.
I don't know the amount of data that must be downloaded before you will be allowed to log in with the client, but it doesn't take long. However, the play experience may be dramatically improved and glitch-free if you wait for the launcher to download more of the game before logging in.
I'm not completely sure the Starter Edition will use 25 GB, but you'd definitely need that much storage space (and perhaps a bit more) if you intend to play the full game and all expansions.

The starter edition does, as it downloads the full game client even if you can't access all content on the starter.

My Data folder alone is 25.5 GB.
I didn't know the Starter Edition downloaded all the data for Cataclysm and Mists of Pandaria. All the same, the download of data besides what is accessible in the Starter edition may not apply to the original question.
At least you won't need to wait until you have a key to begin downloading expansion content.

Since you can access Lost Isles, Gilneas and the Wandering Isle, should have been kinda of obvious lol.

I didn't know that Starter Edition accounts were upgraded to allow access to all races. Even so, it seems like a significant leap in logic from my perspective to assume that all dungeon and quest content is downloaded just to grant access to starting zones.

I'm going to consolidate by replying to your other topic here since the subjects of both are closely related.
If you have 41 Megabits per second of download throughput available at your computer, you shouldn't need to worry very much about increasing the speed of the download. I strongly suggest that you go ahead and start the download so you can try the game. It should be playable within minutes of beginning the game download. The game is available in many languages, too, and the interface should be relatively easy to use and understand.

You can only get to level 20 on the Starter, you cannot go over 100 skill for most of the professions, you cannot make a Monk or Death Knight class or travel to any of the zones from Burning Crusade, Wrath of the Lich King, Cataclysm or Mist of Pandaria that is not the starter area for a new race.
Edit: You cannot whisper other players, but you can be whispered to. You cannot invite other players to groups, but you can be invited. You cannot speak in some of the global channels. You cannot join a guild. You cannot use the Auction House. You cannot use the mail system.
