Searching Wowhead for "The Black Prince",
and selecting the "NPC" tab gives 45 hits,
which when sorted by location, give 9 pages
for Warthion at The Veiled Stair.
How do they differ?
How can I tell how they differ?
How can I find the
real
page with all the user comments?

Wowhead's database reflects the game files in which NPCs aren't really defined by name but by a unique ID number. The same goes for spells and items and so on, all of which can also have many IDs sharing the same name. When an NPC appears in a dungeon, say, and gives you a quest but can also be found in your faction city, in a raid and somewhere in Outland, those are actually different, distinct game objects, hence the separate pages on the site.
As for how to find the one you're looking for, I would suggest looking for the quest (
e.g.
) and selecting the NPC listed in the Quick facts for the page -
Wrathion

9 pages
for Warthion at The Veiled Stair.
This is due to the quest events inside the Tavern and at Mason's Folly, where he holds his speeches and forges the items collected by the player into the successive rewards.
These events are rather rare across all NPCs, and even when, there's often only two instances. It's just major lore characters that can have so many "appearances".

Yeah, Wrathion is kind of a special case. If an NPC shows up as a boss in an instance, we mark a special skull next to its name, like Illidan (
http://www.wowhead.com/search?q=illidan#npcs
), but Wrathion doesn't have an instanced-version we could do that for.

Just dungeons and raids--whatever would be considered a boss in the Dungeon Journal. If we marked the scenario one as a boss though, it wouldn't help the people looking for Wrathion in the Veiled Stair.
Finding a way to mark which outdoor NPC is the real non-phased questgiver though is an interesting idea, I'll see if we can find a way to do so.

This is just an off-the-hat idea from my virus-riddled head, but when a search comes up with several NPCs of the same name, an exclamation/question mark could indicate the instances which offer/complete quests, to visually filter out phased "event" NPCs. On second thought, the candidates for that are easily determined, so a flag for these would be easier to handle than auto-determining this on every search.

You know, this is actually a pretty good idea.
