Balance vs. Feral
Return to board index

Firstly, I value opinions based off of gaming experience of an individual more so than assumptions. Let us start a debate of 'the' hybrid. Give reasons why you believe feral or balance to be the master spec. Back it up with gaming exp. and situations. Things to be discussed: pvp utility, pve utility, raid utility and overall possible dps/survivability.

balance has terrible burst damage..... Burst =/= chain casting.

Burst damage for me would be damage spikes that you're able to control/rely on (through talents or whatever). Appart from trinkets (not specific to us), moonkins have no burst damage, though it's completely true that our damage can spike quite high.

Back to the OT :
Resto druid : can offtank (with gear), does mediocre dps (wether magical or feral).
Feral druid : crappy magical dps, can heal somewhat but for very short times only since their mana pool will drop down fast.
Balance druid : can heal quite well (even without heal gear because of the synergies + great mana regen), but has no instants and will have to rely on HT as their HoTs are less powerfull than resto ones. Can also offtank (but not as well as resto since resto has the possiblity of putting a few points in feral)
But my opinion is that it's the gear that will define in a very big part what you'll be able to do outside of your normal role.
Point in case, i've offtanked Karazhan as a PvE specced balance druid (PvP balance stuff for beginning trashes, bear stuff for later parts and the few bosses that require offtanking). Worse, i've done MT3 on start-of-SSC trashes (up to Lurker) with the same spec, because the fury warriors and feral druids that night had less than 13-15k armor (while i was at 21k in bear gear).
When i spec resto, i can still do 1k5 to 1k7 starfires (normal damage), which would allow me to pass off as a decently pre-raid geared balance druid in 5 man instances.
There are a few key abilities that are really required for a given role : uncrittability + high threat generation for MT, damage increases and rage/energy/mana conservation for dps, instants and enhanced HoTs for healing. Those are the ones that will force you to respec if you want to be serious about a given role.
Gear however is enough to make up for the rest, whatever your spec. So if you're overgeared for an instance or are playing a secondary role (me offtanking for example), you can do it the hybrid way.
If it's getting serious (difficulty level, your role in the raid), then you'll have to change to the corresponding spec.

I've alot of experience as a balance druid and the best advice I can give is choose feral if you want to pvp and pve. As a feral druid you can make compromises without ruining your viability in one or the other. With balance that's just not possible.

Well i really couldnt say i am a pro but i do have somwhat experince with druids....unlike most of you i am only lvl 40 but....i have killed alot of Balance druids......in Feral its all about strength and close combat unlike Balance they are more mana based then anything..your basically screwed once your enemy gets closer to you....
I disagree i have a 70 balance druid and we have things like Natures grasp and if you know how to play a moonkin it isnt hard to keep a feral away from u
also our Force of Nature(the three trees) pwns anybody even heavily geared warriors and pallys because mine hit for atleast 290 every second combined with my crits its over

1° Don't necro threads that are 5 months old.
2° I'm a moonkin and i don't see how i could durably keep a good feral off my back. They'll instantly shift out of roots, will run faster than you (i'm supposing outdoor fight), and can charge every 15s if needed (after 1-2 cyclone).
Doesn't mean we can't beat them, but keeping them at range seems really doubtfull.
