What is this item?

The following item is one of many unique toys that can be found during Warlords of Draenor.
With this item, you can make the surrounding sky for yourself and other players appear as if
the void between the worlds is collapsing upon itself. (Confirmed to work at anyplace including
major capital cities and Ashran: Photo).

Many can describe this item as related to the following other stones:
- Blizzard Stone
- Sunset Stone
- Rain Stone
- Ashen Stone

All of the above items create a visual effect on the sky surrounding the Void Totem, the only
difference between the Void Totem and the other stones is that the Void Totem is a " Toy "
While the others are normal items.

When used this item gives everything a purple hue, plays Netherstorm music, and changes the sky to a swirly purple void. The totem itself is a strange, dark troll totem with shadow spiraling up its center, it is not a Perky Pug as wowhead model viewer suggests.

By far the coolest toy i have. No matter the zone it dims the color and changes the sky. Players who have never seen it before tend to become more "active" once it is out.

Has a 40 yard Area of Effect. The visual will vanish if you go out of range, but the totem will persist so you can re-enter.

As a rogue I´m looking forward to mess with other players and this item, like... ambushing an opponent in an open zone and linking this to my ambush macro giving the fight a sudden twisted weather... if it´s a lowbie and I manage to one-shot and vanish, I´ll drop my Archmage Vargoth hologram too just to complete the prank...

1. Accepted WoD trial.
2. Signed on, started to check abilities that have been added, so I know what to do.
3. Some person ports in.
4. Suddenly, screen freezes for 2 minutes as new data is streamed.
5. Sky looks different, causing confusion.

Realizing the assets were still in place, I figured the data hadn't completely downloaded in the first place, so my reaction in-game was non-existant. I then proceeded to collect my 10th anniversary award, checked new features like the toy box and logged off. After looking up items from my toy box, I found this, and now I'm reminded again why I unsubbed: the annoying elitist player base. Gearscore rubbed in your face, recount rubbed in the face (hey, this is my spare time, not my job), fat mounts on the vendors, and if someone sees a new player, they rather **** with them to get a kick out for their e-peen, instead of being the least bit social. When I first joined, my first interaction was some person buffing me, these days they try to see if they can **** you in the face.
No interest to return. ;)

I had this buff one day in my garrison. I thought it was like the farm phasing effect (where my chickens would suddenly die because of another phase's consecrate or whatever) and let it go. Slowly I realized it wasn't going away. It persisted through other zones (well more than the 40 yard AoE effect reported here). It persisted for days. I was slowly being driven crazy until I realized the buff can be clicked off.

Why does the Void Totem "weaken the barrier between this world and the Twisting Nether"? The Void and the Nether are two different things (and the Great Dark Beyond is another one entirely).

Its duration was increased to 10 minutes as of 6.1.

Has anyone else noticed that since 6.1, when you place a void totem, no other players see the effect anymore? I've tried it in and out of parties. No one near it gets the Encroaching Void buff. Isn't the point of toys to share the effects with others?

Use it before a server shutdown, and you'll keep the buff for as long as you want.

One of my favorite toys. I wish the area of effect was much larger to make it much more epic than localized around the totem.

For some reason this effect seems to be permanently stuck on my rogue.

Will update if it comes off. It will be a sad, sad addendum to this comment... :'(

So I somehow managed to make this effect permanent on my character. I dropped one in a Kazzak raid (on another server) and then when I left group, returned to my garrison, noticed the buff was still on me. So far it's followed me everywhere in Draenor for several days now.

I have not left Draenor yet, so I'm not sure if that will remove it. It's kinda cool that everything is in the void now though!

If you put a Silversage Incense while Void Totem is around, the effect of Silversage Incense will override the Void Totem effect for its duration, and then once it disappeared Void Totem effect will be on again.

Useless toy as far as social interaction. Nobody sees the effects except for you; not even your party members.

So there I was sneaking up to the Blood elf tower in Eye of the Storm (farming wins for battlemaster).

I attached invisibility to my belt and I'd sneak past them all and plant this totem and now you are telling me they had NO IDEA?

Side Note: Using at Waterworks in a Battle of Gilneas, the water disappears

Unbelievable. I've been plopping down a void totem in Ashran at key bottlenecks at event locations for the last six months and I had NO IDEA that since 6.2 I was the only person that actually sees them, or notices the music change to Netherstorm.

I did it because as ally approaches, they would go within the range of the void totem and suddenly the sunny day turns to dark and the fun music goes all ominous, which almost entirely ensured a sweet Horde victory due to lost morale. Now I know why this hasn't been working recently.

Instead, I find out I'm the only one who can see the effect. So stupid. What's the point of a toy if no one else sees it?

You can bug it so you keep the Encroaching Void buff on even after the Void Totem disappears. You simply just have to log out inside the zone of a Void Totem and then log on again, after while when the Void Totem is gone. That way you will have a permanent Encroaching Void buff on. You can easily remove it by just rightclicking, all it does is make your sky look like some purple nether stuff and make the world a bit darker.

FYI This clears up the fog effect in the Brawl event: Arathi Blizzard so it can give you an edge. Unfortunately only you, and not your allies

One of the best parts of the Void Totem is that it makes water invisible. You'll be able to see a water line, but you'll see into the depths.
I also love the way it makes the Shadowland look, very cool.

The old pop-it-down-and-log-out-for-permanent-void-effect trick seems to have been patched at some point in the last year or so.

RIP increased view distance, we appreciated you while you lasted.
