I was questing in Zul'Drak and this dropped for two of my guildies off of random mammoth's, I happened to be right next to the Enraged Mammoths in Zul'Drak so I killed one and it dropped off the first mob. Maybe this recipe is meant to be easily obtained?

I was thinking the same thing: 100% drop rate and 4g sell price means tons of profit, especially if you have a buddy with a caravan mammoth. 4g a normal mob is probably the best way to make money around.

Unfortunately, when I decided to test it by selling the recipe and killing a mammoth for a new one, I noticed that despite the 4g sell price on the tooltip, it only sells for 4s.

Probably Blizzard caught on and hotfixed it, or it's a display bug and was always 4s. Either way, doesn't seem you can abuse this for gold.

Design: Defender's Twilight Opal also drops from Stormforged Infiltrator which spawn during the daily Sons of Hodir quest Spy Hunter.

Dropped from the second one I killed during the next daily after getting Jewelcrafting.

You don't need any certain skill level in JC, I just picked up the profession and am at 1/75 and got this design off a Stoic Mammoth in Storm Peaks.

Not sure if the drop tables change when the zone phase changes at honored with Sons, but I'm currently only Friendly, have kill approximately 25 Champions and Artificers without seeing it drop. Since I can't do the daily to see the Ambusher I can't verify that they didn't drop it on the first kill.

The other three designs dropped on the first kill.

It took me about 20 kills before I got it off a Shattertusk Mammoth in Shalozar. It's definitely not a 100% drop rate but not 0.5% either.

I farmed many mammoths that would drop the pattern and it did not drop. Do i need a certain rep for it?

All earlier posts regarding the drop rate of this item being 100% should be disregarded. As of patch 3.08, this is NO LONGER a 100% DROP.

Does it drop at all since 3.0.8? I have 100 chunk of mammoth in my bags and haven't seen the pattern yet :(
And yeah, I've killed mammoths listed here, mainly the Ironwool and Enraged types...

Edit: I LOVE WOWHEAD! 2 kills after I posted that comment it dropped for me, so keep going if you find it's long, it still dropped, at least off the Ironwools.

100% droprate? I didnt believe it at first, the Ironwool mammoths where dropping them at all, so I went to ZD and BAMM! First enraged mammoth dropped it. Have yet to check the accuracy of the other 4 recipes.

Edit: just got the Defender's Twilight Opal cut after about 10 kills

Edit: just got the Fractured Scarlet Ruby cut after 43 kills. This is definitely no longer a 100% droprate, im assuming since 3.0.8. (as a side note, I still had the two recipes from above in my bags, I learned them then pulled a group of 3, it was on one of them, coincidence? Im sure it was but it cant hurt to be superstitious and try it out if yours isnt dropping) =P

Edit: Radiant Forest Emerald cut took about as many kills as Fractured Scarlet Ruby, maybe more.

Conclusion: Idk if I just got lucky w/ the first one...most likely not 1st kill for a 2% droprate (im assuming that's what the last two were about). So moral of the story is get ur !@#$ before blizz makes it hard. =)

Dunno if this is useful to anyone but post 3.0.8 i've discovered that if im out of a group the 100% drop rate patterns have an extremely low drop rate yet if I join a group even if there not in the zone the next mob i kill that has this as part of the loot table will drop it.

soo... 100% Drop if in group and JC doesn't have it.

random loot is random and this is obviously anecdotal, but since it appears that the drop rate has changed i may as well give my figures to give an idea what to expect. I had 109 looped tusks in my bags when this dropped for me, they are an 80% drop item so i imagine i killed around 130 or so. Also had 63 mammoth meat which is a 50% drop - also suggesting around 130 or so dead hairy elephants. looks like it is around a 1% drop. Of course maybe I was just lucky, maybe I was just unlucky.

Also it is true that the numbers will be reduced by kills from non-jc, but bear in mind that is used to be a 100% drop for all Jc so the numbers were skewed upwards by that.

Edit: Ofc even more skewing is introduced by kills after the design has dropped/been learnt, which will never contain the drop even for a JC. I must be more awake today than when I originally posted last night.

This means the number on wowhead will never be an accurate representation of the drop chance when farming it - because all kills after the design has dropped will artificially lower the drop rate. This probably explains why the drop rate looks so much lower on stoic mammoth than others - they just get killed more often since there are two farmable herds of them running around in the area beside sons of hodir dailies. Presumably, despite the numbers above, the drop rate is actually equal on all mammoths in storm peaks. My guess based on purely anecdotal evidence is a 1% drop on all of them.

I guess I got lucky on this one. I killed around ten of the Ironwool Mammoths and had it drop for me. I guess the WoW loot gods felt sorry for me considering I had to kill 145 of the Val'Kyr for the other recipe. Happy farming is all I can say!

The drop rates on these seem to be about 4% now, here are my results for the four BoP patterns which are zone drops:

Defender's Twilight Opal
No drop count, got this first while doing JC daily

Accurate Monarch Topaz
21 kills, easiest to farm since I went for Stoic Mammoths which have a short respawn time and I could just AOE down a pack of them.

Fractured Scarlet Ruby
23 kills, only one choice of mob for obtaining this recipe.

Radiant Forest Emerald
27 kills, both types of mobs, just rode down the valley killing every harpy I saw.

I've famred three of these patterns all within the space of about a half hour. The drops got progressively harder, 3rd kill, 15th kill, 36th kill. However after having farmed through TBC for enchanting patterns these are by comparison a breeze to farm for, and I know at least a couple of them sell very well. Entirely worth the farming, take an hour and go get all four for your jc.

Got the defenders easy just by doing my SoH dailies. Forest Emerald.. 5 mins.
The topaz was a little longer.. say 7-9min because there are only a few mammoths near K3.
On my way for the Ruby now.. I dont expect it to take too long. Then its off to Joton.

Droped after 86 killed Plains Mammoths, so the drop rate is around 1% from all mobs, a friend of mine got it after 92 kills on Ironwool Mammoths after patch 3.2.I think the drop rate is lower now, not sure,or both of us have terrible luck on drops

HIGHLY recommend the Stoic Mammoths as the respawn rate of running heards was incredibly fast. As soon as I could mow down the pack, another was on its way. I didn't even have to move, just spammed my AOE attack. Getting in 30+ kills and the pattern took only a couple of minutes.

It's best to do this while doing the JC daily Glowing Ivory Figurine, which also requires killing mammoths. I got my figurine after about 3 kills, then the pattern another dozen kills after that.

After 100+ kills I was beginning to wonder if there was a level restriction on this drop (I was killing L77-78 Ironwool Mammoths as a L71 Blood DK after 4.0.1 with zero downtime, waaaaay OP), well there isn't, I finally got it to drop.

Now to try the L79-80 mobs for the other patterns...

*Edit* About 200 frostfeathers later I have that pattern too, dinged 72 while farming them. Also killed Vyragosa. Blood DK is hilariously over-powered at this level after 4.0.1.

Update for this Design in 2020, still dropping from the big peanut-munchers. Just picked this Design up from a pile of Ironwool Mammoths I 'sploded en-mass just outside of K3 in the Snowblind Hills, while on the Daily Jewelcrafting Quest. Good luck!
