I, a lvl 8 lock, didnt expect what would happen. I was getting ready to attack him when he aggroed to me, along with a random hideskinner and a pat skinner. easily killed my imp, but I did a good amount of dmg, along with fearing one add. He didnt have devo. Aura on, but renew, and he healed. FAST spawns, so if you die, BOOK IT!

According to the official Warcraft Atlas, this mob is rated as Uncommon rarity with a respawn timer of ~1.5-2.5 hours.

Been trying to camp him for a while. I have only seen him spawn in one place so far. When you enter the cave head left the hallway will expand into a little room (a white room with 3 blue circles on the mini-map). He will patrol in this little room in a circle. I'm sure there are other spawn locations but that has been the only one for me so far and I've killed him 3 times now.

A note to all warriors trying to solo him: I did this at level 8, and that was with 224 hp and less than 350 armor. One of the key things in this fight for warriors is not healing potions, not rend, but THUNDER CLAP. Don't forget, this ability can slow attack speed by 10%, and give you more time to hit him hard.

If at all possible, however, bring a health potion.

Ok, as a level 9 warrior, I was able to kill him. When you barely get into the cave clear the biggest part thats relatively close to the entrance. Then, back up and when he comes with in range charge him. Always keep your buff on (battle shout) always keep rend on him and thunderclap when possible and maybe a few heroic strikes but mostly thunderclap and rend. This is exactly how I killed him. Hope this helps!

Not an easy kill, by any stretch.

I got him as a level eight Dwarf paladin, wearing all the 'light mail' buyable in Kharanos. Really only due to my interrupting 'Hammer of Justice'. With his heal negated, he's killable. And as I got a nice mace out of it, I think it's worth it if you can.

Again though, this guy is tough, if you're not confident, get a friend.

im a god damn lock i keep dying to him because he hits too fast and i cant even cast fear =.=",i tried with shadowbolts = interupted my voidwalker aggro wont aggro him.I am a lvl 14 warlock!

As of Cataclysm, Great Father is now a level 6 humanoid and is still rare. He is very hard to solo still, too. He casts Battle Shout which increases his attack power by 9 for 2 minutes. When you get him to about 100 hp he will cast Enrage which will cause him to do more damage and take more damage.

He nailed my Gnome Rogue twice! What is this bozo even DOING in Frostmane Hold - the trolls were wiped out by the troggs!

BTW he IS an elite not a rare (gold dragon).

Also encountered an Elite Trogg "<Something> Looter" in the camp down the slope from Jessup McRee.

Ran into him on a level 4 warrior. No way no how was he killable, but he was standing directly in the way of reaching the quest target.

Charged to stun then ran past him. Died far enough away I was able to respawn out of his aggro range. Not an auspicious beginning for a brave gnome.

It was a server & region reroll toon so I was in whites and grays and in that gear he was most definitely unkillable. Stubbornly kept trying and got him to half on fifth attempt via a crazy-lucky chain of crits. Even with that skinny end of the curve Arctikus (painful name, the employee responsible should be bonked on back of the head) wasn't gonna die.

Killed this guy as a level 4 mage but was a pain, had the full boa set minus the ring (helm shoulders cloak chest trinkets staff)

He appears to phase between Shimmer Ridge and Frostmane Hold. I spotted him inside a tent on Shimmer Ridge, but he disappeared moments later. I flew over to Frostmane Hold just to check, and he was inside the cave.

I downed this guy as a level 4 priest with 97 hp & 310 int. In aggroing him, I also pulled another mob. ...Thank god for Flash Heal. Nearly died twice.

This is really annoying. Just created a gnome warrior, she's level 3, and has completed the simple early quests. Now she has to go to this cave - it's the only quest remaining - and every time gets killed by this level 6 Father Arctikus. The only weapons are a sword and axe, and no healing power or ability to evade, so I can't see how it's possible to complete this quest alone at level 3, and can't see any more quests in the nearby region. So I'm pretty much stuffed and can't proceed with this character.

I suppose I can visit the cave with a friend of a higher level, but forcing people to go on group quests at level 3 seems a bit odd.

I did get there in the end - had to go back to the cave over and over and kill a few mobs to get enough XP to push me to level 5 - and got hit by Great Father but just kept running and he gave up. Hid in a corner until my health recovered, then killed the boss.

This guy hits like a truck for a lv 4 mage. I managed to kill him on my 3rd try being the 3rd one was we both killed each other LOL. All that for a stupid 6 slot bag >.<. He spawned in the cave where you do the quest Finishin' the Job...impossible to go around him so no other choice but to face him...It might be easier to do it with another person but being on a low pop server I was the only person around in the area at peak hours

I always used to have trouble with this guy, luckily managed to roll a lock with looms so me and the imp took him down, he did quite a bit of damage though so I wouldnt suggest trying to kill him with a non loomed warrior as that is VERY tricky with the gnomes strength.

No Chance as a Lvl 4 Warrior without Heirloom Items. He hits for something like 30 or more and i only had 117 Health Points at this point while he has 172.

So... just wait for him to pass to the middle of the cave, so you will be able to rezz behind him (After he killed you) to solve the Quest Finishing the Job. Hurry! He will come back to you! :) After he kills you again, just "rezz at Bob" and turn in the Quest. ;)

Edit:

With one of the recent patches the hp pool changed a bit, so you may have something like 200 or 250 health points. But no reason to be happy. The hp pool of the troll also increased, resulting in a still very challenging fight due to lack of skills and gear. :)

He dropped a Small Blue Pouch. ...Frankly, I don't even want to explore the implications of that.

Anyway, I see a lot of Warrior complaining that he is very difficult. While I know my approach is a little outside standard leveling procedure, I did kill him without much issue as an un-loom'd, un-twink'd, un-guilded level 5 Warrior. (I have a habit of using Charge to speed up travel time, so I may have had more mob XP than usual, hence being 5 when I reached the cave). I also went back to the trainer and got Victory Rush as soon as I hit 5, because I can't resist an extra attack.

I also bought a 1H sword and shield off a vendor using money I personally saved up from quests/gray junk on the way to 5. Your primary two attacks at this level (Strike, VRush) don't scale off weapon DPS, so using a shield helps slow down damage intake and you lose very little DPS between 1H and 2H autoattacks (again, at this level).

So those are my peculiar differences from the 'average' leveler, but again, I had no outside help (first level 1 I had on this server), no Looms, no guild.

Given all that, my primary tactic is to save up 2 Victory Rushes: kill a weak Trogg, let out-of-combat regen bring you back up, bring another Trogg to very low health, then engage Arctikus. After you use up your first Victory Rush (you'll be running low on buff time, but try to get full healing from it), kill your ~5% hp backup Trogg and use another Victory Rush once you're damaged again.

Depending on how your 1H weapon's DPS compares to whatever 2H you have (probably Very Light Sabre), you can optionally start out using a 2H for more damage. But once he Shouts and especially once he Enrages, switch to 1H + Shield to help outlast him.

"Audrey," you may be saying, "This is pointless, you're strategizing how to kill a level 6 mob. Just level up and keep going."

Yes, yes, yes. But I like winning. I don't care what level I am when I win — the point is the challenge and success of winning. ^.~

When i was doing this quest i was like HUH? did the troggs adopt a troll? Anyway i killed him on my level 4 priest. No idea how. Power word shield helped alot

Just fought him on my level 4 gnome warlock. Guess they made him easier, didn't even really notice he was a rare till he was almost dead.

Blizzard's Troll Compendium stated that Great Father Arctikus was the leader of the Frostmane Tribe.

However, the new Cataclysm quest Eliminate the Resistance states that "The Frostmane chieftain died in the initial trogg onslaught". So, unless Dwarven command has faulty intel, even though he is present in the game still... Great Father Arctikus is now deceased in the lore.

Battok the Berserker is leading the charge now (and is subsequently killed in action by Alliance players).

Very odd thing with this rare this evening on my new dwarf alt.

This rare was standing inside a hut in the Frostmane area NW of Kharanos. The area where you do "The Perfect Stout" quest. I spun my camera around to make sure there were no patrols coming from behind me before attacking him.

He wasn't out of camera for more than a second, but by the time I got the camera view back on him, the hut was empty and he was just gone. *poof* No one else was up there with me and I was close enough to hear any combat if someone had aggroed and pulled him away.

Weird things, weird things.

Maybe he despawned.

NPCScan popped him but I couldn't locate him inside the cave of Frostmane Hold, ran around outside for a bit and went back in. He spawned on a back ledge and dropped a Small Green Pouch

This guy hit me for 1.5k damage (1k over death) post squish. However his HP are down to 150, you can easily kill him from a distance. Thus melee classes are out of luck until he's fixed.

Dragonflight (10.0.5): Just found and killed him. He was standing calmly in the hut at 49.04, 37.33 on Shimmer Ridge.

Edit to add: He dropped Imbued Infantry Bracers and some cash.

I sat in the cave waiting for over 3 hours and he never spawned. Checked Shimmer Ridge and he was up. Killed him and waited, he respawned 17 minutes later. So I stuck around and killed him several times until I got both the Frostmane Scepter and the Royal Frostmane Girdle from him. Spawn time seems to range between 15 and 30 minutes. Sorry I can't be more accurate.
