This guy shows up to beat you into the ground should you fail the test of cunning on your way to Ravenholdt Manor. Just walk through and don't touch the odd-looking chest as you walk by it.

Of course, if you want to get beat to pieces...crack it open and take a look inside.

He hits like a truck, but if you're curious to how hard a truck might hit, ignore the warning signs and open the chest.

He talks with his fists and they can be quite persuasive. He also uses Slap! which stuns you for a second.
He truly is the <Giver of the Beatings>.

This guy hit me for 430 critical. At 31 theres no chance of winning, thats for sure. He hits relatively slow so maybe with abit of lucky crits, a health pot and health stone if you know a lock, and lots of twink gear you can kill him fast. I think i got him to around 70 percent in the very short time i lasted with my really crappy gear. I had no idea what the chest was. Curiosity killed the cat i guess.

Certainly at least 50% or more of new rogues who find themselves embarking on a trip to Ravenholdt for a quest will be pondering why it says "Your cunning will be tested." in the quest description. Curiosity is invoked, and when they stumble upon a chest that claims it will complete your Rite of Cunning, whether they be suspicious or not, they'll open it. Unless they have quick mouse reflexes and pay attention to everything that happens while they open the chest, (e.g. the blue crystal telling them NOT to open it) they'll find themselves being mercilessly beaten to a pulp by Milton Beats. The true test was moreso of your attention than your cunning, but nevertheless, it's a sad fate being "Slap!"ped by the Giver of the Beatings.

This quest shouldn't be hard. The biggest challenge would probably be to find out where it is, but if you have any sort of questing addon, such as questhelper, that won't be a problem.

I personally didn't even see the chest when I went through the tunnel, just ran all the way through and go the "Rite of Cunning."

Very few rogues will actually die of this mob, some may not see the chest (Like me), some may see that it's a trap and figure out thats what the quest is about, and then the rest of the people can just Vanish.

I opened it and put evasion on and killed him without any effort as a level 34.
I thought there would be a prize for beating him so i opened the chest another time only to see him re-pop which is when i vanish.

After opening it and getting beaten down a few times (never saw the crystal), I finally got the better of him (at level 32).

As you open the chest, Stealth straight away and you should avoid combat. Distract if you need to to get behind him. I opened with Cheap Shot, Backstabbed when i had the energy, evasion, then gouge, backstab, and a 5point kidney shot to finish him off.

So it's doable, but best avoided :)

I beat the Giver of Beatings, at level 30, but I also had on 4 heirlooms and had to use my herbalism heal. I'm not a very smart rogue either, cuz after he died (and disappeared) nothing happened. So...I opened it again, missing the blue crystal on top. This time I was smart. I vanished, and came here to WoW head instead.

WoWhead makes you smarter. Well, some of us anyway.

Hmm, I opened the chest and he only got me down to around 3/4 health (before I won) and I'm lvl 32. Perhaps he's been nerfed slightly.

I still remember 4 years ago when I just started playing on Blizzard (privates before that). TBC was just released. I was normal Human 30 level Rogue when the rogue trainer in Stormwind gave me that letter. "My cunning will be tested? wtf" were my toughs. I went to Hillsbrad and I found the tunnel (I never liked addons, I never used any except maybe error silencers before I find a macro for that and currently only atlasloot enhanced). It took me quite a while. I went to the troll ruins I nearby for which i knew thinking the way may be there. Well it wasn't. I looked around and saw the Overseer on the ledge just above the ruins. Then I realized where the path may be. I found it and I entered the tunnel. Was little scared from the black-haired women at the entrance who warned me that ill get my back stabbed. Saw the chest and tough "OMG free loot!". Just when I began opening it, i saw the blue crystal appear and started reading it:
"DANGER! DO NOT OPEN! Move... WHAT THE F...?" > Release. That was the event that caused me to bind my Vanish to V. Ravenholdt can teach you a lot of things: Vanishing and Being wary: Milton Beats and his chest, patience: junkboxes to exalted and finding the actual manor even if it wasn't that hard and time consuming, learning to Deal-with-it TM: the Azure Bag/Key quest. I soloed it on 51, because no one was going to ST and there was no Dungeon Finder, but then there was a glitch that allowed you to pull only the dragon that you needed. Also it took me several tries.
Sadly the letter that you receive from the trainers no longer gives you the quest, and basicly new rogues will never know what Ravenholdt. Well I guess the manor will be one of these places in which you feel good and safe, because no one goes there.
