This lumbering abomination summoned through the quest Smarts-is-Smarts walks down the length of the Battlescar until it is overwhelmed by the Alliance there. There seems to be no follow up.

Once he has taken damage, he cannot be healed. Even if he gets out of combat, his health will not regenerate.

He walks down, around the scar and back up the other side, but never enters the Alliance town. He'll pass the road fork and go up to the nearest catapults, then just walk back and forth until he dies from NPCs.

I trailed him, protecting him, to make sure he'd make it to the town. I was very disappointed.

Who is Gray?

Is he an undead npc in Desolation Hold or something?

This Gray's Abomination is created by psychopathic NPC named Calder Gray who gives horde quests in Desolation Hold. Caldar Gray starts you on the following quest line:
1) Parts-is-Parts to gather Severed Extremity using Calder's Bonesaw
2) Hearts-is-Hearts to farm an Enormous Kodo Heart,
and finally
3) Smarts-is-Smarts to collect Fresh Brain.
Each quest rewards the player with 3100 experience and 250 (350 for the 3rd quest) reputation with Undercity.

At the end of this quest-line Calder, like Frankenstein, uses Summon Gray's Abomination to spawn Gray's Abomination (perhaps a homage to "Gray's Anatomy"), who will lumber through the Battlescar area towards but not into the alliance area of Fort Triumph. Hitting at around 60-70 and never healing, it will act like a regular Desolation horde soldier and use its unique ability Abomination Hook to grab and fight any Alliance soldiers it encounters until it dies. It will occasionally drop Sweet Nectar, Delicious Cave Mold, and mostly useless Silk Cloth, Stonecutter Claymore, Hardened Leather Pants and Wool Cloth.

If you like the psychopathic NPC Calder Gray and have the WoD expansion, you can get him as a Shadowpriest follower Draeken Nightspear / Calder Gray from the garrison Frostwall Tavern building and possibly, if as reported by Knallert, by searching for the Scavenger trait.

Calder Gray, who comes back in WoD, as reported by Dementron " is likely based on the unnamed shadow priest in Flintlocke vs. the Horde (who was nicknamed "Bubbles" by the comic's fans) ... face, skin color, hair color and class match those of the comic character. It's a tenuous connection, but all the other main characters from Flintlocke's Guide to Azeroth (comic) and Flintlocke vs. the Horde (comic) are present as followers, so it makes sense the last main character would be a follower as well." "Both comics were created by Dave "Fargo" Kosak, who now works at Blizzard as the Lead Narrative Designer for World of Warcraft. The comics were hosted on Gamespy, which has since been taken down, but they can still be viewed using the Internet Archive Wayback Machine."
