Clicking this soil will spawn a Squatting Virmen. You must kill this mob in order to till your soil and plant your crops.

I tested an idea today, which was whether or not it would be faster to click the Occupied Soil and run from the mob until it despawns, the hope being that it despawning would take care of it faster than having to fight it (especially if there are multiple). Do NOT do this! Upon returning, the mound is still called Occupied Soil, but it is no longer able to be clicked and, thus, cannot be tilled and/or planted in!

Edit: After traveling to the normal daily questing area for a decent amount of time, the Occupied Soil reverted to its normal, clickable state. Not sure if it was the distance or the time away that reset it, but at least now it's known that the Squatting Virmen must be killed and not simply forced to despawn.

Never saw this until today, just logged in after maintenance and the 5.2 start and the new change with being able to plow over soil infested mounds. It now stuns the virmin and reduces their health to 30%. Well, that would be all great if it worked. It does actually, but then you're left with occupied soil(s). No way to click on the mounds either, or plow them. Have logged out, flown out of area, in fact I did my 1st days questing on 3 toons on the isle of thunder, logged back in and same deal. Still occupied soils.

I keep getting a strange glitch where the soil remains "occupied" even after I have clicked the pile of soil and killed the vermin. I then click to "plow" the soil and the pile of soil will read both "occupied" and "tilled". I can not plant on the soil with a single or bag of seeds and clearing the area for even up to days does not help the issue. I have reported the glitch and it has never been corrected. I submitted a screen shot. Has anybody else had the problem and know of a fix?

My main and my number one have 28 spots between them in the garden space in Halfhill. My main is exalted, with 16 spaces and never once had this problem.

Today my alt had harvested and there were three vermin. I have always killed them but this time I ran away to see what would happen. I got to the market and they vanished. I returned to the garden to find one space occupied. I consulted Wowhead the exalted to find this thread.

I exited the client and returned to find a regular spot with a vermin that I dispatched.

Problem solved.

Today I have 7 (out of a possible 16) Occupied Soils. A new record for me.

If you have any issues with the plots disappearing or being both untilled and occupied (and unuseable), log out and back in is the first step.
Failing that, use other toons or close and restart WoW.
A time delay may also be a factor.
Update : It appears that if the vermin is killed in the middle of the plot (and quickly), then the plot disappears. A log out & back in is sufficient to bring up the untilled soil plot.
I've only had the issue on my hunters with my pet (a cat) on defend.
Remeber that the plants and plots are NPC's, not herbs or other items. The action on the plant or plot replaces one NPC with another. It mostly works, but occasionally there are glitches if things happen too quickly for the system to keep up.
Further update : A Hunter using Bursting Shot Bursting Shot may also cause the plot to disappear.
