This is the final boss for the Warlock Green fire quest.

Here is the Tactic i used when i killed him on the PTR as Destruction:

1. Enslave the Pit lord and use hes "Charge" spell to interrupt Kanrethad's Cataclysm + the Pit lord has a "Breath" attack that damages all enemies infront of him + it cleanse all the magic debuffs from friendly target so make sure to stay infront of your Pit lord if you want to cleanse your self (you can sacrifice your imp to get more dispells if needed) and a "Siphon Strike" ability which damages the boss and heals you and your Pit lord.

2. Place your portal behind one of the pillars so you can LoS hes Chaos bolt.

3. he Summons 60 Imps you can just AoE them down with "Rain of Fire" + "Fire and Brimstone".

4. he will summon 3 Felhunters that cleanse your Enslavement on your Pit lord, banish the first one and cast your Havoc on the 2nd one and finally the 3rd one start casting Chaos bolt by this you will have 2 of them with really low hp just "Shadowburn" them both and unbanish the first felhunter and finish him off.

5. He will summon a Doomgaurd that casts Shadowbolt, just keep him in banish nothing to worry about.

6. he will repeat some of the above summoning Imps, Felhunters, Doomgaurd keep the 2nd Doomgaurd feared.

At iLevel 490 this fight is brutal. Any pointers for dealing with the Felhunters as Demonology would be great.

This is nearly impossible for someone who's not geared above 490.

I've been trying all afternoon (about 50 tries) as a destro lock, and I still can't get past the imp phase, I'm gonna go as Demo and use Dark Apot, when they come so I can mitigate some of the damage...

Saw this on the US Forums, lemme know if it works

Ok- after about 20 hours of tinkering I finally have a start down that works- I've gotten him to about 20 percent, and I will need to go back to playing here to down him, But finally I have a strat that enables you to actually kill this !@#$er with lower ILV

Ok- To start put down a gateway running to the stairs, don't attack him until he summons the pit lord- when he is summoned make sure he gets aggro on you and use the portal to book it away

2nd- Use shadow fury to stun pitlord and then enslave him, proceed to then run down the stairs with him

3rd- Wait till the imps spawn, make sure the pitlord dose NOT go up the stairs, keep him in the bottom square with you- make him intercept the imps that are coming and use him to tank and murder them, during this phase karen will put rains of fires and the occasional debuff- remove them as normal

4th. keep him on the bottom and wait, if you stay to the bottom square the fell hounds will not run down and murder you, or dispell enslave

5th- the doomguard will come down- Tank and MURDER HIM ( also remember to re-cast enslave and chug a purification potion as needed)

6th- when the second wave of imps come banish the doom and repeat step 3

7th- un banish, you have to the next doom guard to kill him

8th- Murder then second doom guard

9th- He will no longer summon different mobs, rather he will just summon imps

10th- after the second doom is dead set your pitlord to stay and run up the stairs

11th- using the portal u created earlier, kite the fell hounds around the room and murder them (Hardest part but doable)

12th- bring up the pitlord and murder him, you will still have to dodge chaos bolts and cata's
but he will only summon imps at this points- use the pit to trash the imps and just grind him down

This is ALOT longer then doing it normally, but it allows low ilv locks to do the quest... with of course PERFECT usage of mechanics and abilities... like its REALLY heavy on that

(The fellhound kite is the hard part, but it IS doable at 480 ilv with clever usage of burning rush, con-flag stuns and portals- the only issue is if you CANNOT kill the fellhounds by the time he uses cataclysm, your %^-*ed)

Killed him tonight after lots of wipes, ended up having to nuke super hard so he only summoned 1 set of felhunters. If you think you can burn hard enough I recommend this because it cuts out the hardest part of the fight.

1. Use charge whenever it's up for the dmg boost unless he is about to cataclysm.

2. When the imps spawn throw rain of fire/FoB immolate on them for embers and spam chaos bolts/shadowburns on the boss

3. For the first set of felhunters send the pitlord as far as you can with move-to and move the felhunters the other way and kill them. This is the hardest part because the third felhunter may break him out anyway and you will have to nuke it, hide from the chaos bolt, re-enslave, and charge the cataclysm cast all in a short window.

Edit: just did it again for a friend at 481ilvl using the same method, so it is doable at lower ilvls, just more difficult, as the fight goes longer.

This is how I did it as 493 Destro, Mastery stat priority w/ Sac pet.

Phase 1: Burn like so, using the Charge for damage and what not.

Imp 1: Kill the imps like normal, Portal to avoid Chaos Bolt.

Felhunter 1: Banish 1, fear + havoc 1, Dark Soul: Chaos Bolt 3rd with a conflag/shadowburn. Clean up the one you havocd and then kill the first one using a shadowfury stun when it comes out of Banish.

Doomguard 1: This is where I change it up. Soon as the Felhunters die, clear debuffs and head to the entrance, down the stairs. Position the Pit Lord at the base. The Doom Lord will show up, nuke it down like it was gonna be the end of you. Use charge for bonus damage and use the heal too when needed. You will not likely kill this right away so, moving on.

Imp 2: Banish the doom lord when the imps arrive the entrance and use the Pit Lord to tank and kill them. Once they all die, reposition the pit lord and unbanish; kill the Doom Lord.

Felhunters 2: They will get off one enslave so make sure to enslave again right away. Keep the Pit Lord down at the base of stairs. Go up, Banish one, fear one kill one. Go back down, leave them be.

Doomguard 2: Same as before.

Once the 2nd doomguard is dead, you need to go up and kill the last 2 fel hunters and bring your pit lord up. Imps will be coming , kill them and still avoid chaos bolts now and interrupt Cataclysm asap.

Nothing but imp waves come now, so treat it like the start of the fight and kill him. Below are some items you need and some side tips.

Putification Potion is a must have. Use it once you have no debuffs and uber doom is at around 10 seconds.

Tip: Keep an eye on the pitlord. This is nearly 14 minutes long, you will need to re enslave just from the spell wearing off.

I do it this way to overcome the annoyingness of the 2nd wave of felhunters. It helps to LOS move your Pit Lord on the first set and bring him back out once all 3 are dead.

When you master tactics and have low gear or just you cant keep up with dps Purification Potion is an ass saver. I did it only cuz of it on first try.

killed him today... ilvl 476 i think it took me about 50 tries but i realy didnt count... destro specc ofc, tried demo but that didnt realy work out.

The worst part r the felhounds, as for the doom lords, dont even bother banishing or fearing just charge him with the pit lord when he gets summoned and you r set :)

for the dogs i just put a few rains of fire in the portal so they get instantly agrroed on me and then i kitted em behind the pillar next to the stairs. Gotta say i was using kiljadens cunning so i killed 1 of them on the way and then nuked the other two on the far side of the pillar, they shouldnt dispell the pit lord like this, at least they didnt for me :)

ofc you i had to use the purification potion and reseted the enslave at every doom lord summon. didnt get dispelled even once.

Also i used int flask, all in all its not that hard once you know what to do! i think it could be possible with even lower ilvl with the purification pot. i think i finished with the second doom around 4 min and used ember tap and sacrificial pact frequently to keep myself from getting hp too low the pit lord heal is good but once you r out of LOS it gets useless. Just like with the felldog killing

And triple YAY ! for the awesome greenflames :) also u can change the flames back by talking to Jubeka.

Just a tip for the felhunter phase that I find makes it a lot easier.

When the felhunters are spawning, stand on kanrethad's gateway so that the felhunters will all be grouped up at the moment the third one spawns. conflag the first one twice as he spawns, havoc the second one, and then target the third one. Shadowfury all 3 of them so they can't dispell your pit lord, then have your pit lord charge stun them and use his breath to help aoe them. Chaos bolt the third one so it'll kill the second/third one simultaneously, and then shadowburn the first one if it isn't already dead.

Most of the time when this is done right, your pit lord will not be dispelled before they die. And even if he is dispelled when the stun wears off, just finish off the felhunters and enslave him again.

I killed him with a 486 ilvl, but I believe this fight can be finished by much lower geared characters as well.

For those that wreck their gear wiping, I can confirm that if you hearth out to repair you can come back into the scenario at stage 8. You will have to fly back to the entrance of the Black Temple, but the port will take you the rest of the way.

Note: I discovered that if I left the instance, mounted on the Traveler's Tundra mount and repaired, then re-queued for the scenario I was sent back to the first part, as if I had never entered before. To avoid the hassle, dismount before trying to re-queue for the scenario.

An important note for this fight: The Pitlord's charge is an AOE stun and makes the target take 100% increased damage. So if you really need to burst something down (Like the felhounds) then charge them and unload with your strongest hitting spells.

Finally succeeded at this encounter last night, in no small part due to the extensive advice posted here on Wowhead. Thank you to everybody who shared their valuable experience. I would just like to mention that the game-changers for me were using my demonic gateway to drop threat, which allowed the Pit Lord to fulfill his roll as tank, and using a Purification Potion to drop the 7min 1-million damage debuff. I focused on add phases and put DPS on the boss whenever possible, the fight ended on the third phase of "bonus" imps. Best of luck to all who attempt this fight, hopefully it does not get nerfed as I found victory in this encounter to be one of my greatest and most rewarding achievements in WoW!

Killed him today as a 489 affliction lock. Despite what people say, this fight is far from impossible as affliction. I had a flask, 250 food, and prepots. Did not use a purification potion.

Strat for me was use the pit lord as tank. I had him set to assist, breath and charge on CD until imps. First cataclysm happens on imps. With pit lord attacking I soul shattered and dropped aggro with portals. LoS chaos bolt with demonic circle in the little nook next to where the boss spawns.

For imps I would soul burn seed of corruption them. 60 sets of corruption ticking would heal me for near full life making surviving them trivial, it also gave infinite soul shards for that time. I also used breath on them to kill them faster.

When they die, interrupt cataclysm and immediately put pit lord on passive, send him to the pillar next to the entrance stairs to LoS the felhunters. Save 3 shards for hunters, pop dark soul and SB:SS them. Kill them fast and get the pit lord ready for interrupts. If he breaks stun him with shadow flame and enslave.

I ignored the doom guard, pit lord tanked both of them. Save sou shatter if you pull by accident, if u keep using breath off cd then the pit lord will easily hold threat. Rinse and repeat. At 20% pop CDs, potion and doom guard. At this point The doom dot is under 2 minutes. Nuke very hard, if imps spawn soul burn seed of corruption one and malefic grasp it to force it to explode.

One tip I have is learn when cataclysms happen, use charge off cd and don't forget to save it for cataclysm. Also if the felhunters never break the enslave, dismiss him and renslave since it's a 5 minute duration. I had a 5% wipe due to enslave wearing off.

During second felhunters phase, banish the doom guard or else he will break ur pit lord out of passiveness when he is LoSing the felpups. Don't be scared to use the health funnel it's a free heal. I used it mostly after life tap.

Good luck, I am sure it's easier with destro but I didn't think it was hard as Affliction at all. Just make sure to be ready, use glyph of siphon life, soul stone, and health stone for heals. If you die u can sou stone if you are quick and the boss won't despawn.

Just killed him, 479 destruction warlock. I still think the fight is way too hard. Once I learnt to survive the fellhunters the problem was dps. My pit lord was killed on one try. This fight should be nerfed just a little maybe 10-20% health and damage.
Love my green fire.

Note: I did not think I would be able to actually kill the boss with my current gear set up, so I did not maximize the most out of my glyphs. I didn't want to go all the way to SW to buy the ones I don't have. Knowing what I know now I would swap a major out for Healthstone, and add Health Funnel into a minor slot. I had two attempts where the boss was sub 10% but they managed to kill off my Pit Lord. An unfortunate event that could have been averted had I been prepared.

Pre-Fight Prep:
Here is the layout for my gateway and portal;

I put the gateway in the back corner of the little crevice, and the connecting portal entrance next to Kanrethad's Soulwell. I placed my demonic portal around the other wall, but close enough that I could use it as an oh crap if I were to still have the gateway debuff. I wiped enough times on this that I used the Eye of Kilrogg glyph to place the portal and reduce run time to increase the number of attempts per flask hour. Soulstone every other attempt also saved me from placing a gateway every other attempt.

The Pull:
When Kanrethad emerged from the portal I immediately set him to focus so I could watch his cast bar while tending to the task at hand. Kanrethad comes out with a little dialogue then proceeds to walk away from me. (With how I laid out my ports). When he stops walking he targets you. It's just about EXACTLY 5 seconds from the time he targets you until he becomes active. At this point I would count to three and pop my potion. I did it a few seconds early to guarantee I would not use it late and lock my potion cooldown for the fight barring a purification potion. After the potion I would pop Dark Soul and cast a Rain of Fire over Kanrethad's nugget. Then I spammed Curse of the Elements until he was active. Once that landed I followed with an Immolate, Conflagx2, Incineratex5, CBx3 while refreshing RoF/Conflag/Immo as necessary. Using this method I generally got him to 93-95% before he started to channel the pit lord summon. That worked out the best for me. When the pit lord appeared I would immediately hit my enslave macro. If done immediately and glyphed I would enslave before he charged without fail. By not SFury on the pit lord I gained about ~1 second he was not stunned and in my control, and at times I would get a backlash proc. Set the pit lord to assist and attack. Immediately take the gateway. I saved my initial pet charges until the boss attempted to curse of doom me. After the gateway was taken I ran back to the initial gateway portal while continuing to dps so I could take the gateway again. When the boss would begin to cast Curse of Doom I would charge him with my pet and load him up with as much burst as I could. Continue portal hopping on cd as needed.

Imps:

Soon after the boss would run to the center of the ring and feign casting cataclysm. Pit lord stun and burst him. I used this time to stand opposite of him and catch my pets breath to clear any debuffs. This is where my strategy differs from every other one I've seen. As soon as the boss ran to the portal to begin summoning imps I cast soul shatter. Doing this nullified any worries I had for chaos bolt casts. Positioning on this next part took a little practice, but if I stood off to the side of my pet (right next to his right rear leg) the imps would congregate around the boss because their range is almost perfect at that point. Drop a RoF on his head and shadowfury to allow the late imps a chance to catch up.

Cast pets flame breath on cd. Should hit all the imps grouped up behind the boss. I then cast Fire and Brimstone Immolate then FnB spam incinerate until the imps were gone. Usually two breaths from pet is the time frame. The shield from Soul Leech was more than enough for me to not worry about taking fire from the imps. If you're running into problems taking damage you can Sacrificial Pact BEFORE he summons imps so it's up for felpups. Once the imps were down I moved into the center ring to align myself for breath and cataclysm stun. Burst as normal.

Felhound Triplets:

After the cataclysm stun I would position myself like in the picture above, while ctrl+3 (pet move) to the opposite side and drop two RoFs on the portal entrance to get threat on the pups. I saved my defensive cds for this one part. Once I had threat on all 3 I dropped a shadowfury on them to get time to heal or pop whatever I needed to to ensure I wouldn't die. Then a RoF on all 3 while bursting them down. Due to weird pathing I noticed any time I strafed or backed up one of the felhounds would ultimately turn and break my enslave. DO NOT MOVE. Just ember tap/sac pact/HS through the boss' RoF if you get it. Once they are down target boss and ctrl+1 to get your pet on it, and get back on him as normal. Interrupt and dispel etc.

Doom Guard:

When the boss began to channel the DG I dismissed my pet and re-enslaved. THIS RESETS PETS THREAT. This is when chaos bolts become a threat again. After the enslave take the gateway and get a few whacks on the DG to generate some pet threat. After that he goes back on boss. If the DG is more than 10 yards from where Kanrethad summons adds you can forget about him as you won't hit him anymore. Now it's rinse and repeat. Abuse gateway until Cataclysm cast, after the stun soulshatter once again and you should be in the clear for the next round of adds.

Re-enslave on the 2nd DG if necessary. After the 2nd DG you only get imps. Once you get threat on both DGs with pet, Soulshatter once again and handle imp phase the same way until the boss falls over.

WARNING: Killing the boss DOES NOT end the encounter. The DGs will remain active until you zone out or kill them, so be weary of that and your pets enslave timer. Turn the quest in. GG

Soak chaos bolts using below macro. Make sure you have high hp for maxing Sacrificial Pact (hint: Demonic Siphon).

While summoning imps: boss faces portal, pit lord stands behind boss. If you stand behind pitlord, imps will come towards you, use pit lord breath to kill/agro imps while it still attacks the boss.

After imp phase->cataclysm->cleanse yourself via breath->hide pit lord behind pillar(now you won't need to banish). Pop dps cds and use the havoc+cb tac mentioned earlier.

During the summoning of the first doomguard: dismiss your pitlord and re-enslave it, then have pit lord build a bit of agro and it will then tank it for the rest of the fight.

If you need to hide for chaos bolt, use the pillars near boss portal, the are closer and if you hide with a felhunter following you, it wont go near the pit lord that you have hidden behind one of the pillars at the stairs.

You can use your soulstone DURING the fight should you die, but you must do so INSTANTLY.

All you have to do is re-enslave the pit lord, and lay down your demonic circle.

I struggled a lot on this guy in the past two days but I finally managed to get him and I'd like to share a few things that I'm sure could help you beat him.

First of all, there is absolutely no need to soak the chaos bolts. You can avoid having any cast at you at all by using your demonic gateway. Set it up on the left side of the centre circle (minimal distance) and just use it whenever you can. It will drop your threat and Kanrethad will focus the Pit Lord. When I downed him I didn't have one chaos bolt cast at me at all. It also means that he doesn't dot you as often, which is nice.

Secondly, from what I've heard, most people tend to whipe during the felhunter phase because they devour your enslave. The way I dealth with this was taking the gateway and using soulshatter after charging the cataclysm that comes before the felhunters. That way my Pit Lord had full aggro on Kanrethad. Then I sent the Pit Lord to the red cross in this image http://i.imgur.com/7abSHNs.jpg
Now DONT attack Kanrethad. Go to the left side of the portal and rain of fire to aggro the felhunters when they spawn. Kanrethad should be going for your Pit Lord while you kill the felhunters. I saved Dark Soul for the felhunter phases and when the first one comes out I pop it and immo + 2x conflag + havoc the first one, then chaos bolt the second. (You MUST have at least one ember ready for felhunters) Then I shadowfury the felhunters and finish them off before sending the Pit Lord back to interrupt cataclysm. During this time Kanrethad does cast chaos bolt if you are unlucky so you should still have a portal up behind the pillar just in case.

When the Doom Guard spawned I didn't fear it or banish it or anything. I just sent Pit Lord to attack and breath it and used gateway to drop threat. This was enough to keep him aggroed on the Pit Lord the rest of the fight. If you do somehow aggro it (can happen when killing Imps) just send your Pit Lord to attack and breath on it again and use gateway to drop aggro again.

These are the most important things to be prepared for and get right. During the fight you need to make sure to use Imp dispell (from sacing the imp) and dispelling with breath, as often as you can. If you can manage to use the Pit Lord to tank Kanrethad and the Doom Guard(s) throughout the fight it shouldn't be too hard to take care of imps and felhunters. Also, don't forget to use the Pit Lords heal liberally, it's a 220k heal on only 20 second cooldown.

For macros I used the following

This one is optional because it gives you and extra spell to manage. Its useful for the parts without felhunters because it will make sure that the Pit Lord casts Breath on cooldown and you get dispelled often, but you will need to have a normal Incinerate for the felhunter part so the Pit Lord doesn't go after them and gets devoured.

For Talents and Glyphs I used:

I reccomend not using glyphed healthstone or ember tap simply because instant heals are a lot better for this fight (imo). There were times when I used glyphed hs/ember tap and I died when they were ticking so I prefer the instant heal.

Some final few things:

Only use dark soul for felhunters!
Use a potion before combat starts (so you can use Purification Potion during the fight, in case you haven't killed him before the doom enrage)
Don't panic if you mess up a bit. Felhunters devoured your Pit Lord? Don't freeze up and mash all the buttons in a frantic attempt to survive. Get your act together and re enslave that bad boy and use his heal asap as you would probably be needing it.
Don't be afraid to use defensive cooldowns. They're not worth anything if you're dead.
Don't. Give. Up!

Just completed the quest and killed Kanrethad at ilvl 475 - Destruction.

Rather than give you an entire step by step guide for every little detail, I'll just list off a few things that I did which helped. Good luck.

. Purification potion to extend enrage timer (my dps was low).

. AVOID Chaos bolts with gateway jumps out of los (I used the pillars just to the left of the big summoning portal). Do not try and tank it with sacrifice.

. Sacrifice imp to make use of dispel magic.

. Kill imps with the pitlords charge (it's aoe with a nice 100% increased dmg debuff) & flame attacks. Finish them off with aoe (it can be beneficial to leave one or two at a sub 20% health rateso you can quickly reclaim some burning embers through shadowburn. Great time to make use of sacrifice here if you pull aggro.

. Felhunters... Banish the first one. Fear the second one (fear glyph helps keep it in place) and put havoc on it. When the third appears start winding up a chaos bolt and use the pitlords charge to stun it and cause it to take increased dmg, finish with shadowburn. Re-apply banish on first hunter and wait until AFTER the chaos bolt and cataclysm that follows. This ensures that you don't lose your pitlord when you need it the most.

. Set your pitlord to attack the doom lord to give it some aggro then banish it. Re apply banish when you can but do not make it a priority if your pitlord is tanking.

General advice:
You'll need enslave demon glyph, fear glyph and siphon life (really helps with fel imps). I also went with a flask, food buf and a jade serpent pot right before combat to help with initial burst.
Use your sacrifice defensively and often, particularly during combinations of demon spawns, heavy debuffs and rain of fire.
Use the pitlords charge often, cataclysm happens once a minute and the charge is on a 20 second cooldown. Learn your timings!
Do not waste consumables until you can survive until the enrage timer kicks in (curse of doom kills you).

This fight is HELL (or should I say, FEL). If you hesitate or blink for a second, the pit lord he summons right at the beginning will charge and cook you with his breath. My first two attempts I lasted all of 30-45 seconds. Ouch.

The Essence of Order fight was annoying but very doable as destro after a few deaths at ilevel 478 but this Kanrethad fight is ridiculously hard and leaves absolutely no room for mistake, hesitation, or a mis-click of the mouse. I think it is intentionally over-tuned to prevent people from all running around with green fire right away and make those who get it feel very, VERY special that they could solo this last boss.

Probably something I'll put on the back burner until I get some t15.

Update: As of 5.3 your Demonic Gateway can be killed!
Update: As of 5.4 your Demonic Gateway places a 60s debuff on you so it's no longer effective as an aggro dump. Just spec Sacrifical Pact and use it to eat the Chaos Bolts. This also lets you stand so the boss is between you and the Pit Lord the entire fight so Fel Flame Breath will keep you cleansed..

Strategy:

Setup
Demonic Gateway on the left side (facing) of the portal he comes out of. One side near the portal itself, the other side even with the middle of the circle, so you're moving perpendicular to the portal. Do not pull the boss till your gateway is fully charged to 5 stacks. As of 5.3 your gateway charges faster so there's no need to wait for full charges.
Demonic Circle behind the pillar on that side.

Basics
Soulstone yourself.
Prepot and RoF over the boss 3-4s after he initially targets you.
Use the Demonic Gateway each time your debuff falls off. The only exception to this is during Felhunters - If you have the debuff when Felhunters spawn they WILL devour your Enslave Demon.
Use Sacrificial Pact to absorb the Chaos Bolts
Keep Kanrethad between you and Pit Lord so Fel Flame Breath cleanses you.
Use Singe Magic to cleanse yourself, specifically the Seed of Terrible Destruction, as needed.
Charge the Boss when he casts Cataclysm

Pit Lord
Enslave it then put it on passive and have it attack the boss.
If the Felhunters ever eat your enslave wait for the Pit Lord to get to melee range on you and then Shadowfury them all and re-enslave.

Imps
As soon as they start to appear pop Soulshatter and move behind your Pit Lord. Cast RoF over the boss and imps, Shadowfury about half way through his cast~~, and reapply the Demonic Gateway debuff~~. RoF and Fire and Brimstone them down.

Felhunters
Took me about 6hrs before I finally had a strat that worked for these...
Immediately following the Boss' Cataclysm + Charge use the Demonic Gateway. This will keep the boss off you till right before he starts summoning the Felhunters. If you have the debuff when Felhunters spawn they WILL devour your Enslave Demon.

As soon as he starts summoning them...

Cast RoF over the portal - I personally recasted it each time a dog came out but you can time it closer to RoF falling off if you'd like.
Immolate on each puppy as they appear
Once the 3rd Felhunter is up Shadowfury the group. ~~start strafing away from the boss. Your goal is to get behind the pillar near the stairs before the boss finishes his Massive Chaos Bolt (so you don't take it to the face).~~ ~~If you run down the stairs your Demonic Gateway will probably despawn and add an extra level of FML to the fight.~~ This issues was hotfixed on March 21st. As of 5.3 your Demonic Gateway can now be killed.
Havoc and Chaos Bolt/Shadowburn the Felhunters till they're dead ~~as you run and finish them off with whatever once you're behind the pillar~~
Your Pit Lord should remain on the boss during this and you shouldn't need to position him specifically at all. Make sure you interrupt Cataclysm with the Pit Lord's charge, while remaining behind the pillar.
After the charge, and the Felhunters are dead, dismiss your Enslave Demon and start recasting it as soon as you're in range to recast (all while running back to your Gateways).
Attack the boss with the Pit Lord and pop into your Demonic Gateway

After the second set of Felhunters are dead Use your Potion of Purification

Doom Lords
~~Have your Pit Lord attack these as they appear then go back to the boss, so long as you maintain your Demonic Gateway debuff they'll ignore you.~~
Banish the first one. Ideally, with current gear levels Kanrethad should be dead before the second one spawns. If he's not you can try to fear it, have your pit lord tank it, or I'd personally just ignore the thing and keep beating in the boss' face.

Extra Imp Phases
Here's where the fun starts...
Pop Soulshatter for the first group as it should be off CD and position them as you did in the previous sets. Do not Fire and Brimstone them down. Instead you want to keep RoF on them, Shadowfury on CD, and start nuking the boss with Conflag and Chaos Bolts. Make sure you remember to keep ~~using your Gateway and~~ cleansing yourself
Once the boss hits 20% Shadowburn him like there's no tomorrow. The RoF on the imps will keep you at full Embers for the rest of the fight so just spam the hell out of it till he's dead (while making sure you use your Gateway on CD and cleanse).

On my kill attempt I didn't end up using my Demonic Circle or any Health Stones at all. If you're low on HP (anywhere near 50% in my case) I prioritize using the Pit Lords - Demonic Siphon over a HS whenever possible.

Hope this helps, and gives those of you with lower ilvls some faith that it can be done.

if you are undergeared and trying to blame it on the gear, i am here to help you!

my lock finished in 470 PVP Gears with no enchant/gems, no flask/food, so it IS doable!
all you need is some tricks to maimize your DPS

here are some key notes, i am not going to repeat the whole strategy which is all over the page
1. you NEED a Purification Potion to delay the enrage, technically you have 14.5 min enrage timer
but it is actually shorter than that because your pit lord will die before that
the actual timer is about 12-13 min
2. destro is needed for the main trick
3. the summon rotation is imp>fel hunter>doom guard>imp>fel hunter>doom guard> ALL IMP until enrage

do these and your DPS should be more than fine! i did not have perfect execution and i still made it

1. keep curse of element up, and use DS on CD ONLY on BOSS!
2. pop doom guard once Kanrethad is attackable, u will be able to use it twice
3. use teleport to LoS the chaos bolt and dont soak it, you NEED the defensive CD for more DPS later
4. during cataclysm, start chaos bolt and charge before it lands, then chaos bolt again to maximize dps, you get two 200% chaos bolt this way
5. imp phase is KEY, you actually want them to live as long as possible
align ur defensive CDs and heals here, spam rain of fire on them and now you have infinite burning ember, keep conflag + chaos bolting the boss, just AOE conflag and finish them all after cata in case they're still alive
6. put ur pit lord behind the pillar to LoS the fel hunter dispel
7. dont use DS on fel hunter, 4 burning ember is more then enough to finish them coz they wont dispel the enslave if you are LoSing it right, just 2chaos bolt + shadow burn every fel hunter, havoc one chaos bolt, u should have just enough burning ember to kill them, while have two burning embers after killing all them
8. dismiss pit lord and re-enslave when he is summoning the doom guard, use let the pit lord tank the doom guard

if you make it to 20% and you are ungeared, you should be at the imp only phase, gratz!
just rainfire + shadowburn spam and you win!

TLDR : use all DS on boss and use it on CD, 4ember without DS should be enuf to handle the fel hunter even if ur ungeared
IMP phase is key, dont kill them too quickly, rain fire for infinite chaos bolt and shadow burn

I dont know why people are using demonic Circle for this.. you do not need it AT ALL... if you do the fight correctly you will never even get a single Chaos Bolt casted at you..

I both hate and love how they implemented green fire. I love it because it's an interesting quest chain with interesting mechanics, but I hate it because I have yet to be able to kill this little nasty. 481 ilvl and I can't even get him down to 50% health before I die. >.o

EDIT: FINALLY managed to beat him after another 30 or so tries, at 487. I used the strategy posted by Ackthal on Icy-veins. It took me a while to get the strategy down without making mistakes that would cost me my life, but once I did the strategy worked wonderfully.

EDIT: I completed this today at 475ilevel and half PVP T1. I lost track of how many attempts, but took 3 days. So it is possible at very low ilevel, but you have to do everything correctly and have a bit of luck. It's true the mechanics take about 30-40 attempts to get used to.

Use Power Aura's to track Seed of Terrible Destruction Debuff. This reduced how many times i needed to dispel HUGE and No Annoying imp at all! I only use breath on imps and seed debuff. Also if you have too many imps up, it's likely your not keeping the PL breath on the imps for the entire breath. That was a mistake i was doing. But keep in mind a couple imps actually helps your dps, so don't worry just ROF the last few and rack up embers.

Also really focus on putting the Pit Lord way back behind that right pillar. If you do it right and you don't pull the fel pups into LOS, he will not get dispelled. I repeat he will NOT get dispelled if you hide him properly AND pull the fel pups so they DO NOT get LOS on him.

BUT if your dps is slow like mine. Move him to middle quick, the charge command from that far back doesn't work in time.

I am very low gear and pups will go down quick if you: (DS+trinket) slow cast CB pup 1, conflag, havoc, stun, CB 2, burn 2 and 3 .. if you have the embers and DPS trinket DS buff they should go down in time to move the Pit Lord and then charge. If you screw up just die.

Once you are on Imp phase 3+ really focus on portals. The only thing that will kill you is a Chaos Bolt because you got agro from boss.

Near the end. Macro Health funnel (instant) and remember to spam it. on 6-7 imp phase your PL will either release or die if you don't watch it. Keep doing portals, shattering, pop trinkets, ROF imps and stay alive and you will get it.

What a feeling!

Heads up~

Green Fire Quest completed as a itemlevel 488 Destruction Warlock following Esinar's guide and talent/glyph setup.

Strategy (Esinar's basic strategy with a few modifications):
Rain of Fire on the portal in the Felhunter phase, try to keep the RoF up so that it will hit all 3. So as to reduce the chance of your Pit Lord's Enslave spell getting dispelled.

Nuke the first Felhunter with 2 Chaos Bolts, then Havoc+Chaos Bolt the next two.

Finish their HP off quickly with Chaos Bolt, Conflagarate, Felflame, Shadowburn, Shadowfury, IN ANY ORDER YOU PREFER .

(I myself used Rain of Fire on the area I tanked the Felhunters at, usually at the portal I setup furthest from the boss, Chaos Bolting, Conflaging, Shadowfurying, Felflaming, Shadowburning, all the while moving backwards with my character, kiting the mobs a few yards. I found that Rain of Fire gave me the extra ticks of damage sufficient for burning them down with Shadowburn as quickly as possible.)

Manually use the macros provided below in this post for dispelling your debuffs (mainly Seed of Corruption), I took priority on using Singe Magic (or whatever the sacrificed imps spell is named), and the Pit Lord's breath for dispelling my debuffs -all the time- (you will have easier time doing this when you get used to the encounter)

Phases:

The Imps were easy if you get the aoe rotation perfected.

The Felhunters only come twice in this encounter, if you are lucky, they won't dispell your Enslaved Pit Lord at all. Save 3-4 Burning Embers for this phase.

The Dreadlords were very simple if you let your Pit Lord tank them both, before the second Felhunter phase, banish the single Dreadlord (so as to avoid extra damage on you if your Pit Lord gets dispelled and attack you, it will go back to attacking your Pit Lord once banish breaks).

After second Dreadlord you will have Imps for all following waves, this makes it very easy.

Remember to use a Purification Potion to remove Curse of Doom if it's a successful attempt (the potions were expensive on my realms auction house (EU Auchindoun-Alliance), they sold for about 45g each.
I died 2-3 times at very successful try's because I forgot to use the potion, thus having Curse of Doom dealing 1M damage to me. Don't forget!

That was nightmare in my wow life, this fight turn into an obsession to me. But its a good elite fight.

Killed him after about 150-200 wipes with 501 ilvl, tried for one week everyday, but its really hard to handle everything. Spent nearly 10k to repairs, flasks, food, potions. Tried every tactic, spec, talent, glyph even with stamina flask :) but I found one good solution. Now I know what to do in any condition in this fight step by step.

My spec, consumables, talents and glyphes was like this.

Spec: destruction

Consumables:
Flask of the Warm Sun -> 1000 Intellect buff
Potion of the Jade Serpent -> Temporarily 4000 Intellect buff
Intellect Food (pref Mogu Fish Stew) -> 300 Intellect buff

Talents:
Soul Leech -> prevents getting more damage
Mortal Coil -> cant root boss but heals you for %15
Dark Bargain -> use it on critical situations especially save it on second felhunter phase if they dispell enslave
Unbound Will -> I didnt use it on fight but it helps you to clean all dots on you but consumes your health
Grimoire of Sacrifice -> you have to enslave pit lord so you will lose your own minion, its usefull for dps buff
Kil'jaeden's Cunning -> you can keep dps while moving

Glyphes:
Ember tap -> Extra %5 healing
Fear -> helps you to look after second lord in your sight
Siphon life -> healing
Enslave demon -> decreases enslave time, its really usefull for this fight
Crimson banish -> to see banished lord easily.
Verdant spheres -> for good looking warlock :)

Sac Demon
Void Walker -> used imp many times but stamina buff is more important I think. Just in case to soak inevitable chaos bolt.

Demonic gateway is really important in this fight. So place gateways in the center of the area in circle near kanrethad's summon healthstone.

1 - Pre pot and starting rotation is like this. Curse of Elements, Havoc, immolate, conflagrate, chaos bolt then conflagrate again and incinirate.

2 - Enslave pit lord quickly and let him attack boss. Get dispelled by pit lords breath every time. And use demonic gateway as much as possible, it keeps you out of aggro so pit lord tanks many times. If you can use gateway mostly, boss cant use skill chaos bolt on you. Set focus pit lord so u can see enslave timer and his target in case you lose target after using gateway. Also gateway provides you extra time before getting dotted by 7min doom.

3 - Imps: Bring imps near boss and aoe dps boss everytime, main target must be boss. Interrupt Cataclysm with pit lord. Use interrup skill only on cataclysm. You can avoid chaos bolt with demonic gateway debuff. Save at least 3 embers before felhunter phase.

4 - Felhunters: Rain of fire on boss gateway. That helps keeping aggro on you not on pit lord. Pop dark soul and use potion, you dont have to make pit lord stay away from boss. He can continue dps on boss. Kill quickly felhunters. If they dispell enslave, dont bother pit lord coming to you, just continue killing felhunters. After that enslave pit lord if dispelled. Then use gateway quickly to avoid chaos bolt. Do not forget get dispelled before phase.

5 - Doom lords: Always keep banishing first doom lord. get dispelled and dps boss, use gateway and interrupt cataclysm. If pit lord didnt get dispelled by felhunters, dismiss him and enslave him to reset timer. Its a good time to do this.

6 - Second Imp phase is similar to first one, just aoe dps them with main target boss. Save embers.

7 - Second felhunter phase is similar to first one but without lack of potion its kinda hard but killable with dark soul only. Kill them immediately, they usually manage to dispell enslave but dont worry just dps them, you dont have to kite them to the stairs, you can stand near gateway. After killing and enslaving use gateway. Get dispelled and healed. continue dps.

8 - Second doom lord must be feared always. Watch for them and fear again after timeout.

9 - Third Imp phase must be quick kill. Just bring them near boss and aoe dps them with main target boss. Then use gateway to avoid chaos bolt. At this phase bosses health is under %20 so you can use shadowburn as much as possible, just nuke dps on boss and thats all.

Important notes:
Always get dispelled from seed of terrible destruction before it expires, if it expires on you, it turns into annoying imp and it cant be dispelled for 30sec. Its really annoying, stunning you for 1 sec sometimes and interrupting your cast.

Use gateway as much as possible to keep aggro on pit lord and to avoid chaos bolt. You can also use demonic circle near gateway to teleport you immediately to the gateway.

First of all just focus fight and you will get green fire ;)

Just a heads up :

The boss can cast Curse of Ultimate Doom twice, causing it to stack to 14 minutes, However it will tick at the 7 minute mark.
I died after a flawless run at 27% because of this.

Tough boss fight spend a lot of hours on this. 480 Destro Lock

Looks like it runs about 2 loops, after he spawns his 2nd Doom Lord he only spawns Wilds Imps, which helps a lot during the 20% phase since you drop Rain of Fire on the Wild Imps spamming Shadow Burn on Kanrethad.

Make sure you have Purification Potion, you might need it to remove the Curse of Doom. (7 Mins is not enough for this fight)

The toughest thing about this fight and where I spent most of my dieing is going to be the Fel hound stage when he spawns 3 of them, kill them fast and keep agro on them so they don't respell your enslave demon. This is the only stage that he cast Chaos Bolt on me.

Keep your Pit Lord tanking the boss he will take the Chaos Bolt, make sure you macro your Incinerate with Fel Flame Breath.

most ppl die at the end when you face 2x doom lords and many of imps ...i recommend use rain of fire on imps and then when is posible to use shadowburn on boss ...spam shadowburn like hell ofc use soulshater to remove doom lords from your presence and keep them attack pit lord ...boss die after 20x shadowburns :-D ...and when rain of fire is on imps you have unlimited burning embers so shadowburn is easy to damage him before you die ....in some case is good to use or talents at the end for protection

Hi all,

Does anyone know why in hell the same tactics for felhunters in phase 1 wont work on phase 2? I have tried over 30 times now and everything goes well until felhunters phase 2. I move Pit lord behind a pillar and run to opposite side. Put rof on gate and all felhunters run towards me, I nuke the first one down and at the same time as the two others are running towards me the Pit Lord releases and attacks me together with Doom Lord (I have the Pit Lord tanking the Doom Lord). It becomes a mess and I wipe.. same thing every time. Anyone have a soultion for this or idea what I could try?

Ok, so got him down after ~40-50 attempts. Each wipe, I learned something new (except the tries where Stormscale lagged, damn those were frustrating...) Anyway, I hope that I can help someone with what I learned and how I did it.

First my gear and spec: (Unbuffed, from Armory)

Ilvl: 500 (tried with ~489 but failed so decided to gear up a bit)
Spec: Destruction (Just changed from Affliction so had to get used to it, therefore a lot of wipes at first. But can assure you that I know Destro pretty well now)

Talents:

The encounter:

1. Place Gateway (I set it up like this). Buff up as much as you can (Dark Intent, Sacrifice Imp, eat food, drink flask).

2. Summon Kanrethad

3. Put up and Nuke him as much as you can until he summons Pit Lord. I got him down to around 92% at best using x2, x 4, , x 2, x2, .

4. Pit lord by using Macro#1 below. Set Pit Lord to attack Kanrethad. Use Gateway to loose aggro (Kanrethad will soon cast Chaosbolt which you want Pit Lord to take). Keep nuking to build up embers.

5. Imps - As soon as he starts to summon imps, run to gate and place yourself between gate and Pit Lord. Use and Macro#2 (see below) for Pit Lords on every cooldown. This will guarantee that the Fel Flame will hit the imps. To fill use and or .

6. Use gateway to lose aggro - Keep nuking Kanrethad to build up embers. As soon as he starts going to middle start charging . He will begin cast Cataclysm. Charge him with Macro#3 (see below) for Pit Lords . While he is stunned he takes 100% more damage for 6 sec so you want to land 2 x on him.

7. Use gateway as soon as you can to loose Aggro. Use Macro#2 for Pit Lords to get rid of any debuffs, use Pit Lords to heal up and use #Macro4 to Pit lord behind pillar. Move yourself to opposite side. (See my map).

8. Felhunters - While Kanrethad is summoning use to guarantee that he wont target you after he is done. Use Macro#5 for and place on gate. The Felhunters will target you and wont be able to your on Pit Lord because he is behind pillar. Nuke the first one down with , + and the two others with + + fillers.

9. Run to Kanrethad and nuke to build up embers. When he starts to move towards middle do exactly as in 6.

10. Nuke as much as you can while he summons Doom Lord. Use Gateway when you can and remove debuffs. NOW! You should have 2-3 min left on . So use Macro#6 to and Pit Lord and Macro#1 quickly to him again. Otherwise he will release himself during second Felhunter phase.

11. Let Pit Lord get aggro on Doom Lord by attacking him and then target Kanrethad again.

12. Cataclysm - Repeat 6. again.

13. Imps phase 2 - Repeat 5.

14. Cataclysm - Repeat 6.

15. Felhunters phase 2 - Repeat 7. and 8.

16. Cataclysm - Repeat 9.

17. Doom Lord phase 2 - This is where it becomes a bit chaotic. You need to with Macro#7 this one and remember to rebansih him every 30 sec. You also need to make sure that the first Doom Lord keeps attacking Pit Lord at all times.

18. Use Gateway to lose aggro. Use because it is maybe only 30-60 sec left before Curse of Ultimate Doom goes off.

19. Cataclysm - Repeat 6.

17. At this point Kanrethad should be at ~20% and from now on he will only summon imps. Use Gateway to loose aggro before each summon. Repeat 6.

If you are lucky, dont get any unexpected aggro, the other Doom Lord keeps banished and you survive 1-2 phases of imps you are done!

Not sure if anyone posted this, but when he summons the Pit Lord, you can shadowfury stun it, then fear it which will give you an extra 20 seconds of DPS on Kanrethad without him attacking you.

Well after 70-80 wipes as affli warlock in 488 ilvl my opinion is that this is 50% tactic 50% gear fight. I had about 15 wipes so far at ~7% hp cuz i just didnt have enough dmg output to keep dots on the boss while killing 60 imps that tend to spawn every 30 sec at that point. Not to mention about 30 wipes that were caused by:
1. seed of corruption just didnt wanna explode on imps
2. imps spreading on entire floor aka impossible to aoe
3. hunters just randomly dispelling Pit Lord through wall/running into wall so i couldnt dps them
4. boss chaos bolting me without a cast
Anyway what i discovered myself and kept trying to remember and spin in my head all the time during the fight is few things that need to be dealt in any given moment or its a wipe:
1. start the fight with always refreshing 5 things: gateway, portal, stone, sac imp, buff yourself
2. at each hunter wave always dispel yourself->pet in a corner->soulshatter after 3rd spawn and run to oposit corner of pit lord
3. during entire fight watch on dispels/reenslaves/reportals
4. if you are using gateway tactic make sure to track your debuff after using it so he doesnt chaos bolt you
5. dont forget to use Pit Lords breath on CD, i kept forgetting that and its crucial to boost your dps at lower ilvl
I had about 5-10 wipes from just not paying attention to dots on me or losing portals do to them timing out.

I hope i get him soon cuz I'm really starting to go crazy here :(

Something curious I found by accident - I was standing pretty far away at the beginning of one my failed attempts and I screwed up something and wasn't doing any attacks on Kanrethad when the Pit Lord came out. To my surprise, the Pit Lord began attacking Kanrethred on it's own.
I take this to mean that the Pit Lord is automatically hostile to everyone, but more inclined to attack you. Also, he will attack you if you are attacking Kanrethad.

I was playing around with the fight start, and pit lord's stun, and I figured out something useful. If you keep aggro off of yourself with gate, stun the first curse of ultimate doom, more times than not, when he runs to the center to do Cataclysm, he'll interrupt himself, and try to do another curse of ultimate doom, which you can stun again. Also, if you use gateway during doom cast, there's a chance he won't cast it on you, so you can chain avoidances.

I managed to get him to summon imps at about 80% hp before he got a curse of doom off on me. You do NOT want to try for a third doom stun, though... he won't interrupt his second cataclysm, you won't have charge stun up, ending up in a big boom, and you dead.

As an added amusing note, it looks like he has the ability to roll dots as long as he wants. How do I know? He cast Curse of Ultimate Doom twice in a row as I was playing with the above strategy, and I ended up with a 14 minute doom debuff. This only happened once out of about 25 attempts, though.

Hello all.
I managed to kill him today as a ilvl 481 destruction warlock. The fight was pretty tough as you can guess at the start but after a lot of tries (and wipes, of course) the fight went better and better. It could seem to be quite attention-demanding some times and really frustrating (I am talking about one tiny mistake which could ruin your whole attempt even after 5 or more minutes).
Second, I wanted to share what occured to me. After I managed to defeat him, I died and the demons (wild imps, two doomguards and one pit lord) remained here, healed to full health, even when Kanrethad himself was banished. After i ressed, they just attacked me and killed me. So I had to reenslave the pit lord, an kill the wild imps+doomguards. Anyways I was able to get my green fire, which is awesome! I just wanted to share my experience.

Not sure if this has been said, however, if you have your helm mogged to Hood of the Malefic, your wings come out while banishing Kanrethad and gaining your green flames. I stayed in the room for about 20 min doing this after banging my head against the wall completing the quest...good luck or grats, depending where you are.

Man, this guy is massive pain in the butt to kill, not worth the time, wipes, and gold for repair to get green fire. For those who haven't done it yet I recommend waiting for Blizzard to nerf it, they nerf everything, it's just a matter of time.

Hey guys, good news! There is a little repair anvil near Kanrethad as of patch 5.3, so you no longer need to leave to repair.

Just downed him today as Destro ilvl477 and my boyfriend did it a few hours earlier as destro ilvl473. We got him pretty close at lower ilvls as well, so just keep on trying until you have the mechanics down! This is not a huge dps race if you have a potion of purification. The best advice I can offer anyone having issues is just take it one phase at a time, get it down, and move on to the next. Remain calm, and don't lose your head when he gets low on health; that's how stupid mistakes are made (like taking chaos bolts to the face).

I used the gateway method to consistently dump my threat. I set up weakauras to play an obnoxious sound when my gateway debuff fell off, and I knew to jump back in. I made sure to utilize the Pit Lord's charge ability and pump some breath and chaos bolts in at least 2 times before the first imps and then once every imps phase at the beginning (not just to interrupt cataclysm). This definitely helped me in the long run in terms of DPS. Even if you can't chaos bolt him whilst charged, make sure to use the Pit Lord's breath.

WATCH OUT: As of 5.3 your gateway CAN be killed by his Rain of Fire. Don't loiter around your gateway or it will die.

Most of you may already know this but in case there are some who don't, here's a way to give yourself a BIG stamina boost prior to fighting this guy:

The talent Grimoire of Sacrifice says 15% spell increase and 2% health regen. But if you also choose the talent Soul Link, the buff from Grimoire of Sacrifice changes to 15% spell increase, 20% increase max health, and 2% health regen. Before applying the buff, my health was 441K (this is with the Dark Intent stam buff as well). After using the Grimoire of Sacrifice spell, it increased to 534k! (It lasts for one hour)

Also, after sacrificing your voidwalker, you gain a move called Shadow Bulwark...which gives you 30%max health for 20 secs. (it has a 1 minute cooldown) Using that, my health shot up to 723k for 20 seconds!

I didn't know about this until my son told me about it yesterday. He just found out about it from a friend.

Hope this helps some of you in your quest for green fire!

There is one really important change to this fight added in 5.3 If you completed scenarion part up to Kenrethad you will start scenario again at him saving you good 30 mins every time you come back or need to get out for some reason! After my initial fails as low geared affli warlock I took a break from this 2 weeks, geared up, relearned how to play destro and destroyed him in under 30 min of tries. Dont give up, it's worthy!

I did it after about 30+ tries as Destro with ilvl 482.
Destro has a really big advantage in this fight being able to benifit from AoEing the imps to build Nuke for the boss! After you use the pit lord to charge the boss as he casts Cataclysm, you can bring him down by about 5-7% with your Chaos Bolts.

Regarding the fight itself, the messy part is the Summon Felhunters. Once the boss starts summoning, Soul Shatter then RoF over the gateway and start moving your Pit Lord. You do have to keep the Pit Lord behind the pillar (I am sure most of you noticed). Make sure he is nicely placed behind the pillar so that the boss can go to him (because you soul shattered!) and you can have the Pit Lord start attacking the boss again. You have three Felhunters so I recommend you banish one of them. Move them to the center but don't make them face your Pit Lord (He is already safe behind the pillar but just to be on the safer side). The boss will move to cast Cataclysm, so you will charge him and all the remaining Felhunters will take extra damage since they will be affected by your Pit Lord's charge as well! After that, the boss will start casting Summon Doom Lord so you still have some time to finish the remaining Felhunters. Once they are down, quickly dismiss the Pit Lord to re-enslave him again.

What you really need in this fight:

Soul Leech a must-have survivability
Grimoire of Sacrifice with an imp to be sacrificed to dispel debuffs
Purification Potion to remove Curse of Ultimate Doom
to surprise the Pit Lord instead of him surprising you!

Food and Flasks will make your life easier!

My experience:

Most people say you need to banish/fear the Doom Lords as soon as they appear... I didn't bother except after reaching the burn phase (after Wave Two of Felhunters). I let the Pit Lord tank the Doom Lords for a nice 20 seconds as soon as they arrive or after re-enslaving the Pit Lord to put threat of them then once I was done with the second wave of Felhunters, I started banishing and fearing occasionally just to reduce the damage on the Pit Lord. This is easier afterwards since all you have to worry about are the imps. I still had about 1M HP left on the Pit Lord by the time I was done so don't add an unnecessary level of complexity to this fight!

Always keep at least One Burning Ember so that you are ready to face the imps during the burn phase! Don't get excited about DPSing the boss down!

Do not use the gateway during the Felhunters phase as this will make them go to your Pit Lord instead of you! The best use of gateway is with the imps phase.

Keep any eye on your debuffs and expect to learn to adjust to the dispelling CDs

I managed to avoid dying by Cataclysm by JUMPING more than once during my tries.

btw since the charge ability from the pit lord has only 20 sec cooldown u can use it twice in a phase(+ to interrupt cataclysm).The first time I killed him I didn't know that so even though I was 495ilvl with flask,food,potion I only managed to kill him and die at the same time(had rain of fire on imps and was spamming shadowburn).
without this, you'll probably have some wipes trying to kill him before 7mins pass

I just wanted to say that it is possible to beat this guy as a Demonology Warlock. So those people who think you have learn how to be a Destruction you don't. I saved my metamorphosis/dark soul for the Felhunters and after that use as normal. I used normal metamorphosis and immolation aura for the imps just dont use too much fury on the imps so you have some for the felhunters.

For those who just hit 90 and wish to pursue this quest; it is possible to get up to Kanrethad (stage 9) with at least a 440 ilvl.

** It took a good chunk of time so I don't recommend it if you are in a hurry! However, it was a challenge and was fun but I don't see myself getting very far with Kanrethad at this ilvl... I will try and see if I can update this as I go.

If it hasn't been mentioned already, the macro to target the wild imps and cast the fel flame breath will not work as Demo. The pit lord has a bias in targeting YOUR wild imps over the enemy wild imps, thus ignoring the 60 enemy imps blasting you.

Just a heads up.

Kanrethad may not kill all demons upon you defeating him. I had to deal with the two Doom Lords after getting his health all the way down. Luckily, it will still count as a win, and you'll still have your Pit Lord to help you kill them.

Finally sat down and mastered this encounter. Thanks to the people in this thread for laying out strategies for taking down this difficult fight.

I don't know if the encounter is bugged now on 7/5/2013 or what, but no matter what you do, the second wave of fel hunters WILL break your enslave. I placed him behind pillars, around corners, and even at the entrance to the top platform. He always broke and came after me. (or maybe mine was just bugged? I don't know.)

My only solution to that problem was to put him far enough away that I could burn down all 3 fel hunters, and get a new enslave on him before boss casts cataclysm.

I think my only saving grace was having 523 ilvl, so that I could burn him down and the fel hunters down with relative ease. Maybe someone else can chime in on recent kills with lower ilvl, but the enslave break is the only hard part of this encounter.

DONT use the Kafa Press. I have it macroed in with dark soul misery as affliction and it puts your purification potion on cd. Made it all the way to the second doom lord and couldn't dispell the curse of ultimate doom.

After about 50 deaths I was finally able to beat this guy in FULL PVP GEAR (mostly tyrannical, some malevolent). The method I used was not mine but a guide I found on youtube (i'm too new to post a link but I'll put what to search for at the bottom). There are a couple but this one, along with some other little useful tips I thought of, was what got me to get my fel green effect. Keep in mind this is for DESTRO locks.

After learning the fight I ran into the problem of not doing enough DPS with PVP gear and getting one shot when the Curse of Ultimate Doom ran out (the 7 minute debuff). If you grab some Purification Potions, you can use this to remove this debuff. He will eventually recast it on you, but by that time I had him down to about 75-80% which gave me enough time to kill him. Make sure you save it for when Curse of ultimate doom is the only debuff on you. I used it at the beginning of the felhound phase right after I use unbound will.

Also try to make a habit of whenever he starts casting Cataclysm, start casting chaos bolt, then use the pet to stun him (he takes more damage when hes stunned) so that basically he is stunned just as you fire the chaos bolt then immediately fire another chaos bolt while he's still stunned. This extra damage is pretty helpfull to beating him if you have full pvp gear.

Lastly if your using the strat where during the felhound phase you hide the pet behind either the left or right pillar, I would suggest putting down a demonic circle on the opposite side of the gateway from where your pet is (put it pretty close to the gateway though), so that way when the 3 felhounds come out they will go for you for sure. If you watch the guide I posted you'll know what I mean. If you do this make sure to remember to recast demonic circle when you teleport there to avoid it disappearing on you.

Personally for me once you learn how to deal with the felhound phase the way this guide shows you, it is fairly easy and the imps phase is what gave me more difficulty. (There are only 2 felhound phases and 2 doomlord phases and after that he only summons imps). If you do it properly Kanrethad shouldnt cast a single chaos bolt on you so I saved most of my healing for the imps phase.

It is a lot to remember and takes a good amount of practice to get it down (I can't tell you how many times I would forget to do something and wipe because of it), but it's definitely possible. Even if you have FULL pvp gear (my ilvl was 491)

Just to let you guys know, you can out run Cataclysm he would tend to cast it whenever the fel hunters came out and dispelled my demon so I would just kite the Pitlord with all the other demons (fel hunters, and fel gaurds) around the pillar on the back right side near the steps, so the boss wouldn't hit me with Chaos Bolt while keeping my flying and and Rain of Fire, then when he starts to cast Cataclysm just run down the stairs and you wont be hit by it, once I found this trick out and I used a Purification Potion at 1.5 mins left on debuff, I beat it right away.

Oh yea don't forget your Shadowfury while kiting all the demons, it helps a lot so you can heal easier, also I lost control over my demon on both of the fel hunter phases and still beat it so don't think just because you lost control of your demon that you lost.

Literally the hardest fight in the history of Warcraft....

I finally downed him at 498 ilvl.

Things you need:
Grimoire of Sacrifice
Food Buff of your choosing
Flask of the Warm Sun
Potion of Purification (Incase you don't beat the Ultimate Doom timer)
A LOT of determination...

Since there's a million posts on the basic strategy I will just say, my best advice is to use the Pit Lord's charge as much as possible. Most of the time, I was able to get 2 Chaos Bolts off each time I stunned Kan. This will help you tremendously. Just make sure it's not on CD during cata or you stand no chance.

While the various guides out do a great job explaining the detailed mechanics, I thought I'd elaborate on a few key points I thought to be especially important.

1: Have full embers and full HP going into each fel-hunter phase. This, hands down, helped the most of anything, at least for me.

2. Use Demonic Gateway on Cooldown - this prevents most all of the chaos bolts from happening, and makes Kanrethad Soul Fire the Pit Lord since you won't be generating much, if any threat (Gateway debuff)

3. Macros, macros, macros! - they are listed elsewhere, so I'm not going to repost, but these are KEY, especially the firecleaning and charge spells.

4. Bring a Purification Potion - I used only 1 to dispel Ultimate Doom when there was <30sec left on the buff and even though he reapplied it, 14min is more than enough time to kill him ;)

5. While he is summoning DoomGuards I did the following: Re-place Gateway, Dismiss/Re-enslave Pit Lord, re-summon Portal

Anyways, many many thanks to the others that have written the incredible guides that helped me complete this, and I hope others find this added info helpful!

What makes this fight so hard is that it isn't about being a good warlock player, it is about being good at controlling your pit lord (something which you can't practice outside the fight) and at dealing with mechanics that you really don't see occurring anywhere else. In other words there is no way to develop muscle memory or any kind of feel for what you have to do in this fight except to just keep doing the fight itself, but because there are so many phases it takes quite a while to get things down.
Not that I am saying it is too difficult. I'm glad there are challenges like this in the game. On the other hand I'm a little surprised that they chose to make the green fire quest so hard; green fire seems like something lots of RPers would care about and very few of them will have the skill/patience to get through this fight, at least until gear makes it possible to faceroll.
I would like to see similar challenges added to the game for all classes. I would love to do something like this on my hunter main (perhaps the reward could be a special soulbound bow for xmog or something).

Since nobody has posted anything about a Demonology kill, here is what I did... also, I'm kind of a noob, probably always will be, so be kind.

With that said, I used 2 different guides and somewhat combined them to work best for me and my Demonology Spec. They are as follows:

Ackthal's guide and Esinar's video

Ackthal's guide is the foundation for the way I did it, glyphs (substituting Glyph of Imp Swarm for Glyph of Ember Tap), talents, macros and mostly the strategy. The main thing I used from Esinar's video is the placement of the Demonic Gateway. For me it caused less trouble being off to the side.

I did not place a Demonic Circle. One less thing for me to worry about.

I did make another Macro, Demonology Specific. Which in retrospect I should have created a long time ago.

/cast Metamorphosis
/cast Dark Soul: Knowledge
/cast Imp Swarm

If you have any other racial or profession buffs put them in, every little bit helps. Being an Orc and an Herbalist I also added

/cast Blood Fury
/cast Lifeblood

This macro comes in handy for the Felhunter phase.

Assuming that you're reading this you've probably wiped a few times, watched a few videos, and read enough that you know how the fight goes, so I will just post what I did differently from Destruction spec.

Buff up, summon and sacrifice your Imp. And for the sake of the god's, don't forget your lock rocks! Once you can attack Kanrethad pop you're Demonology Macro and apply Doom and Cursed Auras, and one Touch of Chaos. After this you'll automatically switch out of Demon Form. Cast Corruption, Curse of the Elements and then do as much damage as possible before you enslave the demon. I saved my Doomguard for the end.

Imp phase
Imps come out, Hand of Gul'Dan x 2, Hellfire, Fel Flame Breath macro.

Felhunter Phase
After Kanrethad is back up from casting Cataclysm, move the Pit Lord far away from you. I didn't have much luck with trying to LOS him from the felhunters so I just moved him to where it would take him awhile to get to me. You should be at full Demonic Fury. When the first Felhunter comes out pop your special Demonology macro, get your Aura up and use Touch of Chaos. I use this spell because it does the most damage of the instant cast spells. You may have time to use some Soul Fire to get them down faster if Molten Core is proc'd. You will most likely need to re-enslave the Pit Lord here, maybe twice. If he's already there and you re-enslave him use the Fel Flame Breath macro on the remaining puppies, if any.

Doom Lord Phase
Easy. Do what Ackthal does.

Rinse and Repeat. Always take advantage of the Pit Lord's heal! If you sacrificed your imp use Singe Magic as often as possible. I used my Potion of Purification at 2 minutes left on the Curse of Ultimate Doom. Just before the 3rd Imp Phase he was at 15% so I popped my macro, and my Doomguard and focused on Kanrethad.

There you have it. Like I said, I'm not elite. When I started this fight my item level was 508. 70+ wipes later, 1000+ gold on repairs, and an item level of 521 is what it took for me to beat this in Demonology. Here is my armory info in case you wanted to see.

A player named Serious posted on youtube what I believe is the absolute best way to deal with the felhunters. It goes like this:

move your Pit Lord to the left edge of Kanrethad's gateway. He doesn't need to be any further away.
move to the right of Kanrethad's gateway and drop Rain of Fire on the gateway (I use so the whole area is covered)
The felhunters will automatically aggro you and will not see the Pit Lord behind them. Havoc the first Felhunter
Target the second Felhunter and wait for the third one to appear.
Start casting Chaos Bolt on the second felhunter
When there is about half a second left on your cast, have your Pit Lord Charge the felhunter you are targeting
Watch the first two felhunters die from your double chaos bolt (because they are stunned). Target the third one, cast 2xConflagrate and Shadowburn (or Incinerate if he is still above 20%). The third one dies too.

The whole thing takes about 5 or 6 seconds. You still have a few seconds before Kanrethad targets you with a Chaos Bolt!

How to kill Kanrethad Ebonlocke: The almost-had-him -surefire way

I did this at Item Level 488, mix of PvE and PVP gear as Destro

Supplies:

-Purification potions: I suggest stacking these to 20 or so, maybe you need more, maybe you need way less

- Flask of the Warm Sun: stack, again, depends, you can bring as many as you want, but just to get ready

- Food which gives a beneficial Well Fed buff: I don't care if you bring Agility! As long as it's beneficial. But no really don't do that, bring Intellect, Haste, Mastery or Critical Strike Chance

- Money for repairs: You know the drill, more or less depends. :)

Talents and Glyphs that make it easier.

-Soul Leech: To soak some of that damage
-Shadowfury: Always useful against those Felhounds and Pit Lord
-SacPac: That's right, pack your sack
-Unbound Will: To dispell of course
-Grimoire of Sacrifice: No, we don't need our demons, yes, I am sure.
-Kil'jaeden's Cunning: Boy, Kil'jaeden sure was a clever guy

What Glyphs are useful?

- Glyph of Enslave Demon: Faster enslave, gogogogo
- Glyph of Healthstone: 40% max health over time? Yes please
- Glyph of Healthfunnel: I personally didn't use this, but I can see how it helps a great deal
- Glyph of Siphon Life: If you FnB those Imps with immolate, heals never hurt right?
- Glyph of Nightmares: It's fabulous

You know that circle? The one you run around in, strafing, casting Incinerate and all your other spells but ultimately fail the fight anyway? The one in the middle where Kanrethad walks up to when you summon him?

You see the well?

Go in front of it, keep like a little distance between you and the well, 3 imps in a row distance to be exact, or was it 2 voidwalkers? Anyway, a little distance, now look to your left or right. Walk to one of those directions until you reach the edge of the circle, which should only take a couple of steps, turn around and face the other edge of the circle to the direction you didn't go in in the first place, good, now cast a Demonic gateway there, now you should have Demonic Gateways left and right. Now go summon Kanrethad. What? No you don't have to wait for charges,, it takes ages until you can attack him anyway.

Huh? Demonic Circle? NO. Believe me no. A headache at best.

The Arena.

Place your character horizontally, now you are having intercourse with the Black Temple.

This is important, because you need to know the area.

See those pillars next to the portal where you can hide something out of sight from? Like a huge demon under your control? Or a group of your friends waiting for you to come and yell surprise and jump out from on your birthday but that never happens? That's all you need basically.

The Fight

-Kanny (yes, Kanny) comes out, set him on Focus.

-Before he becomes targetable, put a Rain of Fire on him and then Curse of Elements him. DPS him as much as you can, don't use any damage cooldowns like Racials or Dark Soul though.

-- He summons Pitty (yes, Pitty). The moment Pitty appears, Shadowfury him and En-slave him. Remember, While Kanny summons, just DPS until Pitty appears.

- Let Pitty aggro Kanny. Use the portal and DPS, use the portal to keep low on aggro.

The three basic principles.

You should never forget these 3 things.

- Use your portal to keep aggro down, always, except in the Felhunter phase (explained later)

- Dispell debuffs, using Singe Magic you got from your dead Imp. (after all he has done for you you kill him for power!) And if they become too much in number use Unbound Will

- DPS, keep DPSing

If you forget any of these, you will die, if you forget any of these, it's your fault for not having a decent memory.

Now, Kanny should have casted the Curse of Doom.

He will Cataclysm, your Pit Lord interrupts him with Charge the first time to show you how it's done, how nice of Pitty! If not, click charge yourself.

Keep DPSing, Aggro down, and Dispelling.

Kanny summons Imps, Rain of Fire them(RoF), Fire and Brimstone them(FnB) and Fel Breath them. You must kill them quickly, why? Because this isn't a very important phase.

You can generally use Fel breath several times. Keep RoF and FnBing them until dead while having aggro down via portal.

Kanny uses Cataclysm. Make Pitty Charge.

After he does this let Pitty go behind a pillar, put him on passive and Soul Shatter yourself, Kanny goes to summon Felhounds, Rain of fire, Burst them down with Havoc, Chaos Bolt, RoF and Shadowfury. Also use Conflag and damage cooldowns now. (Dark Soul and Racials)

I want you to put Pitty behind a pillar after Cataclysm, don't wait until he starts summoning them because Pitty is slow.

Remember, DON'T LET THE HOUNDS FACE HIS WAY, THEY WILL DISPELL AND RUIN IT FOR YOU.

Also, DON'T PUT PITTY BEHIND THE PORTAL, IT'S BUGGY.

Kanny will summon a Doomlord after this.

While he summons you have to be quick, click on Pitty portrait and Dismiss. Re-enslave instantly. Aggro Kanny with Pitty again, and aggro the Doomlord and then back on Kannie, go through a portal again to keep aggro down and depending on aggro levels maybe not attack for a second or three to make Pitty gain aggro.

Don't Fear, don't banish the Doomlord,just aggro him to Pitty, that's it.

By now, take a look at your Curse of Doom, is it running out soon? You have to see for yourself, I won't warn you about it, you must use Purification Potion to remove it, I like to use it 30 seconds before the Curse runs out but that's me.

Following so far?

Okay, RINSE AND REPEAT THE ENTIRE PROCESS, yes, everything he will do again.

Do exactly like I said.

REMEMBER THE MANTRA.

Portal, dispel, DPS.

Remember, while he is summoning the second Doomlord, Re-enslave Pitty. Aggro the first DL and Kanny again, and then the second DL and then back to Kanny.

At this point I advise you to heal Pitty, otherwise he will die. Use Health Funnel for this. I like to bring him to 60% or so, but you be the judge, the fight won't last long anymore.

Okay, now he will only summon Imps.

Keep aggro down, DPS Imps down and use the Embers to Chaos Bolt spam. Dispel too.

Use SacPac, damage buffs and Soul Shatter at leisure, also Ember Tap, Healthstone and Drain life if in need.

When you do this, and keep doing this good and perfectly you reach 20% on Kannie.

Just RoF the Imps and spam Shadowburn for Drain Life. (Haha, i made a funny....) Use the Imps as generators for Burning Embers.

He will go down like a ton of bricks.

Tips.
No portal during Felhounds, you SoulShattered already.
Use SacPac when facing great burst
Use Shadow Ward
Use Infernal//Doomguard for extra damage.

I see other people using Sacrificial Pact a lot, but since I had an issue with my pitlord actually dying a time or two, I don't go this route. 25% health for us, isn't a horrible about, but 25% out of his is a huge chunk.

I tried to keep off aggro the whole fight, letting the pitlord breath on him, then Soulshattering initially. I did not use Demonic Circle, or Demonic Gateway to LoS him, as none of this worked for me and I just ended up wasting food and still getting hit? He automatically stands behind the boss, so charge and breath on the imps RIGHT as he gets done summoning them, I put a RoF down as he was, free burning embers, why not? Since he had aggro, I moved him to red RIGHT after I interrupted Cataclysm. RoF before HIS gateway,Havoc on one dog, tab, x2 conflag on dog two., should have x6 backdraft, so use those on dog one Then you should have a burning ember or two to toss at that other dog, or with haste just incinerate him, and build up burning embers for the boss's charge debuff. I dispelled every time something got on me, since some of those hit preeetty hard. My only issue was remembering to dismiss, and reenslave him during the summoning of the doomlords. Once you do all this, you should be good! The second doomlord was a bit of a challenge, since I'd get aggro on him when I dismissed my pitlord. Just have him breath on Ebonlocke and get the new one, and Soulshatter! + Demonic gateway if you need.
Once both doomlords are out, only imps will be summoned, I think if you breathed on one and got him down,it might be a bit easier, but the timer runs out eventually! REMEMBER TO CHECK YOUR ENSLAVE! My third one ran out RIGHT as he finished an imp cast, so I had x2 doomguards, x1 Big bad boss, and x20000000 billion imps on me all at once, which is a shame since I had him at about 5% then. D:

For some reason when the Enslave demon on the Pit Lord ends, I can't re-Enslave him.
It only works for a few seconds but then the Enslave breaks. Anyone else having the same problem?

While at first I was outraged by the difficulty of this fight, I found over time that this quest really forces you to learn the warlock class and how to fully exploit its abilities. And once you finally complete the questline, you feel proud of yourself and proud to be a warlock.

On a side note, I think that is why Blizzard needs to bring back class-specific quests like this. It makes you proud to play that class and gives roleplayers a higher feeling of importance playing that class.

I can't get past the first wave of felhounds because I can't kill them fast enough before they get rid of enslave demon and then He uses chaos bolt and I can't interupt it or i die before i can re-enslave the demon or I just can't handle everything that is happening.

I've done this on four warlocks now, three of them in 5.2/5.3 and the fourth just today post 5.4. I dreaded it this time because of the nerfbat warlocks got, but thankfully the new gear available now
majorly helps cancel all that out, and then some.

Sure, you still have to follow mechanics if you have a high ilevel, but the sooner you can kill him, the less time and opportunity for something to go wrong. This lock was 540 and able to take him out before the second fel hunter phase even happened. Increased health made it more possible to eat a chaos bolt if need be, only one doomguard came out, and a number of other things that just made it go more smoothly than before.

So in short, if you are still struggling, take the extra time to get better gear. It will definitely help.

Finally (after 7 straight hours or determination and wipes) I killed him. I'm sure no one has any illusions that it was easy but this is how I did it.

527 Desto lock

Soul Leach, Shadowfury, Dark Bargain, Unbound Will, Grim of Sac (sacrificed my imp), and Man's Furry talented

Glyph of Ember Tap( Saved my ass at points), Glyph of Siphon Life (imp phase loved this) were the main ones I used with the enslave one as my only real used minor.

You will NEED a purification pot, I tried the tactics below without one and even with a dark bargain it's hard to deal with 250M dmg over 8 seconds, so after 7 mins you're dead even if it's 7 mins 10 seconds.

To start I set up my portal and my circle behind a pillar to line of sight any Chaos Bolts that might have come my way

I focused him and opened up on him as soon as I could, full blitz DPS with all CDs and most of the time got him to about 87%-90%. When the pit lord came out I shadowfurried it and enslaved (glyphed) and used charge and breath while I dropped aggro with Soulshatter. Because portal wasn't dropping my aggro I used it only for fel hunter phase to get me to a spot that I could order the pit lord to hide. For most of the fight I kept my aggro low and made sure to keep a rain of fire and immolate on him (if you find you're having an issue with aggro try not to use rain of fire) and cast incinerate only when he was aggroed enough to stay on the pit lord after a hit or two. For me that was when I had about 60% or lower aggro, it might vary for you.

On Imp phase I popped Man's Fury, Rain of fired the portal and used Fire and Brimstone to kill the imps quickly while making sure to use my newly created embers to keep my ember tap HoT up for as long as they were and then went back to the boss.

Fel Hunter phase really began for me after the imps died as I would back off and let the pit lord gather a bit more aggro on him before interrupting his Cataclysm. As soon as he was stunned I'd have the pit lord breath him and move immediately behind a pillar and took over "tanking" the boss for a few seconds. I said I let the pit lord build more aggro for this and so I would keep my hits on him to a minimum so the boss would reaggro the hidden pit lord behind the pillar and run to attack him after summoning the fel hunters.

When he summoned the fel hunters I'd rain of fire the gate just like the imps but would DPS them one by one as they came out. There are some strats listed in this comments section that offer other ways such as havocing one but I chose to single target them and never ran into an issue. While I was dealing with the fel hunters my pit lord was out of sight and I was ordering him to attack the boss behind the pillar making sure to use his breath attack whenever I could. If the fel hunters died quick enough the boss would stop attacking and run back to the middle with the pit lord hot on his heels. When the boss went to cast his cata it looked like the pit lord wouldn't make it, remember it's a charge so it has range. As soon as the charge was done I dismissed the pit lord and re enslaved it. In the time it took the boss to recover from stun I had the pit lord back on him using breath to build aggro and I used a soulshatter here.

The Doomlord phase was a mixed tactic for me where I let the pit lord grab agggro on it and then I banished it so I wouldn't have to take a few doombolts before I could banish it again. From there I repeated my tactics from the first go round of the imps and fel hunters.

The trick came when the second doomlord phase occured when I had to dismiss and re-enslave again. This is where the banished doomlord was useful as it allowed me to grab the new one, hit the boss, unbanish and get the pit lord to aggro it, banish the new one and grab the boss while I soul shattered them.

After that I dealt with the third imp group as quickly as possible and began a harder DPS of the boss as by this point he was near 20% or lower health. I wiped at this point 4 times before I realized that the imps aggro on you regardless and so in order to keep my aggro on the doom lords and boss low as I popped my Man's fury and Fire and Brim to DPS the imps i pulled the imps away from the portal to a side and killed them all. From there it was just a matter of DPSing the boss and keeping my aggro below 90% as he slowly began to die.

I hope that at least part of this helped someone and if you have any questions feel free to ask cause I'm not sure if I was clear enough on some things and I'd be happy to attempt (all be it probably badly) to clear it up

I had to create an account just to say: Holy crapbuckets this is one of the most excruciating encounters of my career. I'd REALLY like to beat this guy as DEMO but 99% of the successes I've read/heard of seem to be well-geared Destrolocks.

I refuse to believe that this guy can ONLY be beaten with certain very specific parameters:
Must have Purification potion, Must sacrifice Imp, Require glyph of enslave... Really? That's total crap.

I play warlock because I like being able to do things differently, not so I can be some wannabe mage. Why would I do the definitive WARLOCK quest without my pet demon who's been by my side longer than most of the people I know?

This is a "for dummies" and non-heroic geared warlocks attempting the quest guide. Obviously if you're in Heroic raid gear just ignore this and stomp his face.

Notes --

Minor glyphs don't matter beyond Enslave Demon. Demonic Gateways are buggy and disappear half the time during combat. It also no longer wipes threat, so Gateway Attunement is useless. I completed the encounter using only Demonic Circle: Teleport.

Items--

Purification Potion - Remove the 7 minute curse with 2-3 minutes left. He will reapply it almost immediately after you dispell it; DBM lies.

- Use at 20%

Drums of Forgotten Kings - Yay sweet, sweet Pally essence!

Crystal of Insanity - You have to be insane to try this quest.

Green Curry Fish - You need to look buff to impress.

Misc. Flasks - If you want to try it while Crystal of Insanity is on CD you will likely want the boost.

You will want macros for Havoc, Fel Flame Breath (for imps and yourself), Target & Enslave, and Charge. You can find these pretty easily doing a search for Green Fire Quest Macros.

Other Notes --

I could not shake aggro at all during the entire fight, so I did not bother with Soulshatter.

Start off by buffing, eating, soulstone, etc. Don't forget to sacrifice an imp for good luck. Set up your demonic teleport behind one of the pillars near the stairs before moving to the front. After activating the altar /focus him and move over to stand outside one of the alcoves to either side of the portal.

Once he is active blow him up as much as you can (save for healing) before he summons the Pit Lord, use your enslave macro to easily catch the Pit Lord the second the channel is up. Use Singe Magic and Fel Flame Breath to get rid of Agony and Corruption. Use Demonic Siphon and as needed for healing. Save health stones for Felhunter stage. Run into the alcove for Chaos Bolt (hug the back corner until the channel is up).

Use your charge macro to easily interrupt him when he channels Cataclysm. Blow him up with 1 Chaos Bolt while he's stunned (average 700k-1mil damage depending on gear).

When he runs over to summon imps lay down multiple layers of Rain of Fire and switch on to AoE them down ASAP.

It's easy to get turned around on the platform so stay as close to the alcove as possible at all times for Chaos Bolt. If you are too far away when he casts Chaos Bolt throw up AND Sacrificial Pact or you will die. Save Unending Resolve for 2nd and 3rd summon imps and doomguard.

When he begins to summon Felhunters immediately send your Pit Lord as far away from the portal and you as possible. Lay down Rain of Fire to draw aggro before making your way to the stairs (use demonic teleport to get behind the pillar for Chaos Bolt and to put distance between you and the felhounds. Use your Havoc macro to easily take down 2 hounds at once.

If the hounds dispell enslave use Fear on the Pit Lord to keep him away from you until all 3 are dead.

Banish or Fear the 1 Doomguard that he summons soon after Felhounds.

Once the Felhounds are dead and the Pit Lord re-enslaved, rebuff and make your way back to the alcove (reset teleport on your way there). Beware that he may Cataclysm before you can reach him - DON'T FORGET YOUR CHARGE MACRO! It will allow you to direct the demon to Charge without multiple clicks.

Keep the doomguards feared and banished. Drop an Infernal on the 2nd wave of Felhounds or the 3rd wave of imps depending on how much trouble you are having on either.

Rinse and Repeat.

Notes --

It is extremely easy to get turned around on the platform; I recommend setting up raid markers on your path. It's also easy to panic or tunnel vision on adds - make sure you are using Singe Magic and Unbound Will every time they are off CD. Don't forget to drink a Purification Potion before the 7 minute debuff runs out or you will die. Don't forget to soulstone yourself - your Pit Lord will continue fighting so long as it is enslaved when you die.

This is a tough fight with luck oriented mechanics. If you fail the first, second, third, fourth... you know what - Just take a five minute break after every wipe. It will let your CDs repop anyway and you'll get it eventually.

I don't have a video, and I haven't seen anyone suggest this yet...

My lock is Pasyphae on Exodar. I did this at 519 ilvl. I used a +1000 int pot, +275 int food, and my healthstones. I did not use healing potions because I was concerned about it interfering with the Potion of Purification. I also have capped herbalism, so I had the minor heal from that.

I did the setup that most have suggested. I LoS'd my circle to the right side of Kanrethad's gate, and just around the LoS corner I put my gate from there to where his summoning altar was.

Here is where my strat starts to vary.

Upon summoning, I used NO cooldowns and spent NO embers. I simply charged up while he stood there laughing at me. I did not notice a significant difference in the % I dropped him over my numerous attempts when trying it with cooldowns and with embers. I always ended around 87-89% when the pit lord activated.

So now, fully embered, as I continued charging up while he was still casting right to the very end of it, I immediately popped shadowfury on the pit lord and enslaved it. As soon as I put him to passive, I set him on Kanrethad, I popped dark soul, my doomguard, herb's lifeblood, and started casting chaos bolt. just before the cast went off I had the pit lord charge him. Chaos bolt went off, I hit conflagrate, another bolt, another conflagrate, and another bolt. At this point the charge stun wore off, and I continued nuking with bolts with my buffs up. Once I was embered out I started up charging again. By the time he started summoning imps I had him somewhere in the 50s%. I -think- it was around 56%, but it may have been lower.

Once he began summoning the imps I quickly put myself right in front of his gate, dropped a RoF, hit my Fel Flame Breath macro, Twilight ward, FnB, Conflagrate, and started tab incinerating. The imps went down in a few seconds, and I popped Demonic Siphon.

By the time the imps were down I was back up to full embers. I didn't start spending them until I saw him run from his casting spot back to his cataclysm spot. Once he was moving, I started up my chaos bolt, and like before, just before it let off I hit charge, and did the CB/Conf rotation to pump them out as fast as I could. He did a few casts from the center, I started charging up some embers, and I sent the pit lord to LoS off to the left of Kanrethad's gate.

He began summoning Felhunters, and I banished the first one the second I saw its health bar up, before it was even fully displayed on my screen. Before that cast was done the second one's healthbar was up, so I tabbed to it, hit it with Immo, Conf, and Havok. By then the third's bar was up, I clicked it, and hit it with a CB and Conf. It died immediately upon those two spells landing, and the one with havok did as well. By this time I had the two magic DoTs on me, and was taking some damage, so I hit singe, unbound will, and unending resolve. I then de-banished the remaining hunter, and hit it with ember making spells. Just before it died, Kanrethad started cataclysm, so I hit my charge macro, and the last Felhunter died before it dispelled my enslave. I did what I could with what little time was left on the charge debuff, and ran over to my LoS corner and jumped through my gate, to get the debuff from it, and then hit soulshatter. The doom lord popped and I set the pit lord on it, he got a few hits off, I popped my potion of purification, and was charging up on Kanrethad, who was at this time around 4-6 million hp. Once I was charged up on embers and the pit lords charge was off cd, I started up a CB and hit the charge macro and repeated the sequence for a third time a few seconds after the charge debuff wore off, he was "dead".

I don't recall when, but I had to teleport like...twice during the fight. I would have had to do it once more, but it was after I gated and shattered, so it went to the pit lord, not me, so I didn't bother. I also had to singe multiple times, and UW when I could. I didn't use FFB except on the imps, and I didn't use Sacrificial Pact.

Anyway, if you took the time to read all that, let me say this ~ I'm not an uberlock. I'm pretty damned good, but I would say I'm a far cry from epic, and my dps certainly reflects this, in conjuction with my ilvl. I feel confident after having used this strat that I could have done it much lower. I had tried for two days at 497 deciding after many many attempts to gear up a bit then try again. I did not however, fully utilize charge at all. I believe it could be done at 497 using charge liberally with stacked embers and good timing, and still have him down before the 2nd Felhunter wave.

I didn't have recount going on this attempt, but I can tell you that my first burn wave fully buffed embers during charge were popping off for just over 1.5 million.

IMO the Pit Lord's Charge spell is the absolute KEY to this fight.

Haha, this #$%^er. Anyway, destro here. I waited till my ilvl was 541 (which makes me think I kinda suck as a warlock, being unable to down him earlier and all, but I don't really care anymore.). I was bored with grinding Loremaster last Thursday and decided since I was already in Outland and had some gold for repairs I might as well go and get pwned some.
I did what one of the top commenters here suggested: glyph Soul Link and Grimoire of Sacrifice . Pulled Imp out, sacrificed him. That gets both your hp up aand gives you Singe Magic . Trust me when I say YOU NEED THIS ABILITY ON YOU. Especially if you're impulsive like I am and can't find one freaking Purification Potion on your damn server. Singe Magic will get you through, especially now that the demonic gated no longer remove aggro. Anyway, at 541 I finally had enough - pizzazz, is that it in English? - and around 796k health. He came, told how awesome he is and how awesome he'll be (ease up on the grandiosity-obsessed antagonists, Blizz,please..). Make a separate Focus for him. You'll need it for fast swapping. Some people in the vids used fancy UI changers, like Bartender and such; I'm a simple gal and that just confuses me, so ole Blizz ui it is. Anyway, here on it is pretty standard: Shadowfury immediately on Pit Lord, have him both stun and flame the b*tch; I tend to pop Soulshatter here, to not much use.
Blah blah avoid damage, cast Singe Magic any time you can, use the HP drain from the Pit Lord. Better descriptions everywhere here, but I wanted to say the fight got (maybe?) bugged for me. Right before he started summoning the second Imp stage I had the Pit Lord rush and stun him and while his cast bar WAS active and he was talking, he actually summoned no Imps. That was the turnpoint of the whole fight for me and seeing that he was essentially a minute from summoning the second Felhounds wave I cranked everything up and blasted him, almost having a heart attack. No spoilers, although all of you prolly know how it ends by now.
ONE IMPORTANT POINT: I get distracetd easily, so when Jubeka was talking I immediately cast Rain of Fire, which to my horror was red. After I finally looked up on here what she actually said - because in BT you complete the quest and it's no longer in your questbook - I flew to Altar of Damnation. You have to go to Kan'rethad and place your hand on him to drain your awesome green fire spells.
(Anyone else a bit dissapointed at how the Steed mounts look with green fire? They look like someone lay green over the red/orange, not even bothering to remove the previous colour.)

Important Note: As of patch 5.3, There is a Rusty Anvil right at the entrance to this final area. You can use it to repair your gear if you find yourself wiping often. (It is right near the area where you respawn)

You do not need to worry about hearthing out or using a mount to repair your items.

I was doing Heroic Scarlet Monastery and was fighting Whitemane and I cast curse of tongues on her before she said "You will pay for this treachery" and the word "Treachery" in demonic turns out to be "Kanrethad"

How fitting since he committed treachery against the Black Harvest.

Just adding a tip that will heal the headache of many pvp locks. Beside following all the existant guides and etc, reforge your hit to about 12%, that will stop the pit lord from randomly geting out of your control. I also recommend doing it in the destruction spec, because of the AOE and self healing when in LOS of the pit lord.

Finished on 3rd January 2014. 525 item level destro lock. I want to give tips about which parts of the encounter were the biggest roadblocks to me.

-My encounter lasted 2 complete cycles. That is, 2 imp phases, 2 felhound phases, 2 big demon phases.

-That means the fight lasted longer than 6 minutes. The problem I was facing before was that the pit lord would break out of my control as soon as the 2nd felhound wave came out. I thought that was because I was positioning him incorrectly. It was just the Enslave Demon running out. That is why I have decided to release him and re-enslave while Kanrethad was summoning his first big demon. I assume that if I released him and re-enslaved while the big demon was already out, he would have dropped aggro with potentially dire consequences.

-I did not use demonic gateway at all. I only used demonic circle. I found out the hard way that I had to re-cast it just like enslave. Somewhere after the first fel hound wave I just dropped it again while I was dodging a chaos bolt.

-My tactic for dealing with imps was to rain of fire - back away - use the breath as soon as the first imps came out and fire and brimstone them down while targeting Kanrethad - by the time breath is off cooldown all the imps are out and the pit lord is now facing you. Using breath again and walking into it will kill the rest of the imps and cleanse your debuffs.

-My tactics for dealing with the fel hounds was to havoc the first one and use my chaos bolt macro on the second (dark soul, trinkets). That took off 90% of the hp and I finished them off with conflags. The third one I tanked and incinerated down while pit lord walked back up to him and finished him off, breath-cleansing me in the mean time.

-Your dps is important, but not very very important. Pit lord is doing most of the work. I never chaos bolted him after stunning his cataclysm and I still made it.

-Unbound will is crucial. Really crucial. I set myself some points in the encounter where it provided me a lot of flexibility and freedom. Right before the first imp wave, when Kanrethad dotted me up before running up to the portal I saved the pit lord's breath and used Unbound Will as soon as he started running. Debuffs taken care of and I had a breath for the first imps.

I finally killed him after many many wipes on my 500 ilvl warlock in patch 5.4.2 which is after the nerfs to Demonic Gateway and Soulshatter.
I put a Demonic Portal: Summon to line of sight on the right side of the summoning stone and a Demonic gateway to line of sight on the left side of the stone. At the beginning of the fight I prepotted and started to generate as much embers as I could get. When the boss summons first add you must Enslave it right away and keep it that way for the rest of the fight. In the first phase put rain of fire on the imps and kill them as quickly as possible. You generate a lot of embers from those imps so heal away. When the boss casts Chaos bolt, make sure to line of sight it with either Gateway or your portal. Before every phase the boss casts Cataclysm, make sure you interrupt that with your enslaved demons Charge. Before the third phase starts, make sure you say your Enslaved demon to go to line of sight where you put your portal and use Soulshatter a bit after the first Felhunter spawns so that the boss goes to your minion and keeps you alone with the Felhunters. Kill them as fast as possible, because you need to get your minion out of line of sight before the boss casts second Cataclysm. Fourth phase is very easy, just tell your minion to attack the Doomlord for couple of seconds and he will get aggro on it. Interrupt boss with charge when Cataclysm is casted. Rinse and repeat.
A good tip that I fount out is to dismiss your huge minion after the Felhunters and quickly re-enslave him, that way he wont run out of your control when you least expect it to.

Some macros I found useful:

For people who have a warlock as an alt and not their main/most played character. This fight is a huge pain. Especially for someone like me, because I don't use my lock very often, and I only know how to use Demonology, when all the guides say that Destruction is by far the best spec to use for..well..anything.

So after almost a year of trying on and off, I finally DID get this done. You can do it with the spec you are comfortable with, it does take a lot of practice and time though. Item level helps too. I got to 520 before I was barely able to do it.

Also, I didn't actually know this at the time, but the fight ends when he is at about 500k HP. So you don't have to down him all the way. Also, if your Pit Lord is enslaved and you die, he can still finish the fight for you.

Just defeated him tonight, be sure to enslave pit lord obviously, when the fight is in count down I spawned 3 rains of fire.

Pit Lord- Enslave and Charge right away with Chaos Bolt.

Continue the fight using your demonic gate way and demonic circle to Los his Chaos Bolt.

Fel Imps- 3 rains of fire Fire and Brimstone Immolate one then spam Incinerate

Interrupt his Cataclysm at all costs or you're screwed.

Fel Hounds- Send your Pit lord out of their line of sight then havoc one chaos bolt the next then kill them with aoes and Fire and brimstone.

Doom lord- Make sure your Pit lord hits him to get aggro, when Doom lord is being summoned dismiss your Pit lord and reenslave.

Wash rinse and repeat, hardest part about this I think was honestly all the dots he used, make sure to have Unbound Will it will work really well when you cant get close for your Pit Lord to use his Felfire Breath, also your Sac imp will give you Singe Magic, use it sparingly.

Be wary of the second Doom Lord he will always aggro you, Pit Lord has to hit him or you're pretty much done.

Will admit I did die at the end but your Pit Lord will stay enslaved I had my Pit Lord kill him and stayed a corpse until Jubeka showed up. I got credit, released repaired and got my green fire, Good Luck everyone :)

Used my Doomguard early on for a boost of DPS.

So, with the combined help of all these guides here I killed him today. Thank you guys!

Anyway, I had a bit of a problem with the Pit Lord staying enslaved after the boss died. I died, too, so the Pit Lord and the Doom Lord just continued hitting each other until the enslave faded. They resettet, but did not despawn. If you find yourself in a similar situation, make sure you are fully prepared to destroy these guys. :D It's five minutes now and they're still there, right beside Jubeka. (%&@§$!)

The key to this if you have good gear is to save your Chaos Bolts for when the guy is stunned.

2 Good heavy crit Chaos bolts can see his health take a huge hit.

As for tips from a newbie lock who managed to do it after many tries.

1. Build up as many embers at the start and stun the guy as soon as you have the demon enslaved and hit him with 2 chaos bolts make sure to use your Darks Soul CD so they hit even harder.

2. Banish the Doomguard and keep him banished throughout the fight.

3. Make sure to save a chaos bolt for the felhunter and havoc the first one out of the door and chaos bolt the second the third should then come after you and not your enslaved pit lord.

4. Always make sure to Chaos bolt the guy when you stun him for cataclysm.

If you are in RF gear and you get some good chaos bolts during a stun you should get him down before the boss ever summons a second pack of felhunters.

I was finally able to kill this guy last night (05/16/2014) after the standard 30-50 wipes that everyone else had. My item level when I started attempts was 491 and when I successfully killed him it was 522. I read all these posts, the posts on icy-veins, the wow forums and watched every youtube video I could find. Everything is helpful and all the information out there will help anyone do this if they are persistent enough. The fight is purely about micro managing your abilities and being 1 step ahead of the boss when he goes to use his abilities. As with everyone else the fel hunters are the worst part of the fight, everything else gets trivial after a few attempts but the fel hunters have the worst RNG ever. I have had them remove enslave immediately and i have also had attempts where they never ate the buff on the pit lord it at all.

Anyway don't give up you will get it! Here are some things i found helpful in my attempts:

My mouse as the standard 3 button setup (left, middle and right click) and 2 buttons on the side. Every add-on i have shows them as button 1-3 (left, right, middle in that order) and button 4 and 5 are the ones on the side near my thumb (they toggle the back and forward buttons by default in your web browser). I used the middle click to bind the fel flame breath cast @player, button 4 was havoc and 5 was fear. This allowed me to easily remove the dots on me without having to think about it much (and there is so much thinking in this fight that a 1 second delay in judgement is very hard to recover from). I had banish bound to E and enslave macro bound to Q. This allowed me to Banish the first fel hunter, then button 4 and 5 the second and dark soul + Chaos bolt the 3rd. With my item level and trinket proc i was able to 1 shot those 2 fel hunters and then recast banish on the 3rd (to unbanish it) and nuke it down with a shadow fury to ensure it doesn't break enslave.

As other posters have stated the general rythm of this fight is:

1. Nuke boss,
2. Enslave Pit Lord,
3. remove debuffs and Get ready to port away from the bad chaos bolt.
4. Charge your pit lord at him when he runs to mid (even if he doesn't get the first cataclysm off since it fails sometimes, the 100% increase in dmg will help with his HP pool)
5. remove debuffs again and set up for imps.
6. 2x RoF, shadow furty and F&B incin/immo/conflag spam, pit lord breath will be back up by then to help with imps.
7. remove debuffs and prepare for another bad CB
8. get ready to charge mid again and after remove debuffs.
9. Most important part... Fell hunters. Banish first, havoc + fear second, dark soul CB 3rd... if you can get a conflag off on the boss before the first fell hunter you will have a faster CB! don't conflag after you havoc or you waste a charge!
10. CONGRATS, you made it past the worst part. Get your big guy back on the boss and remove buffs/get ready to warp away from the bad CB. **Note, you should put down a new demonic circle at this point, i found it expires shortly after the 3rd CB and i got caught with my pants down on what looked like a good attempt... not fun***
11. Redo your curse of elements on boss and get ready to charge mid again, remove debuffs etc.
12. Doom lord time, send pet in for a few seconds to get aggro then get him back on the boss.
13. remove debuffs, another CB inc!
14, charge mid, remove debuffs etc.

After the cycle starts over with imps, fel hunters doom lord etc. At 522 ilvl i managed to kill him before the 2nd round of fel hunters. My recommendation for anyone who wants to do this is wait until you have some LFR/flex gear so you can do the same, i never banished the doom lord and got to a second fel hunter phase (which i barely lived through) and a second doom lord but it was a wipe.

Long post i know, hopefully there is something in there that helps, weather it be keybind suggestions or whatever, but the only real advice that anyone can give is be persistent... you will rage, you will get angry, you will curse blizzard for making such a stupid encounter, then it will all come together and you will beat it and you will turn into one of those locks that think its the best fight ever. You will thank blizzard for making it because it made you a better person inside. Then you will, despite the tiredness, queue for an LFR at 2:30 in the morning when you have to be up at 7 to show off your shiny new green fire! Then you will wipe in LFR and move slow and before you know it its 5am but who cares, you are on a high, you got your green fire!

DON'T... GIVE... UP!

If you are in a party when you defeat Kanrethad, he will NOT cast annihilate demons once you defeat him, and while you will be able to turn in your quest, you will not be able to sap the green fire effect from him. However, you can simply leave the instance and go to the altar of damnation to sap his powers from there.

Finally got around to making some serious attempts at completing this quest and getting the Fel Green Fire effect. This encounter still requires you to know where you need to be at any given moment in order to deal with the various mechanics of the fight, but a moderately well-geared Warlock should have no problem with the dps component of the fight anymore.

My warlock had an ilvl of 548, and did not yet have the legendary cape. When I was finally successful, I had a flask but no food buff. The fight was over before the first Doom Lord was summoned.

I make absolutely no claim to being a top tier dps Warlock (I wish!). With that in mind, this encounter is is very achievable for any warlock that's willing to put in the time.

A fun fight! I followed this guide to kill him. It takes some practice and anticipating the waves of demons, especially the felhunters, and positioning yourself properly on the imps. If you have a purification potion and a 5.4 ilvl (I was 519) this fight is NOT a DPS race; focus on getting the steps right rather than DPS and you'll have your green fire in no time.

525 ilvl destro lock with very little experience and doing 140k dps on average, killed the boss *just* after the 2nd set of imp adds.

This was literally the first attempt that I got past the fel hounds. So if you're stuck on them, know that you'll probably have your green fire if you can even get past them once. I had no food, no flask as I was just trying to learn the pups. Really good Pit Lord placement was all it took, but I think if they dispel your command demon, you could probably get away with fearing your pit lord while you finish them off.

the way i killed this guy was a little bit suspicious, i think that a bug has ocurred.
when i left him with 4000k HP he killed me and continued fighting against my enslaved pit lord, at this point he already had summoned the 2° wave of imps, but i kept beating him with the pit lord after dead, but after he casts the cataclysm transition of imps to fel hunters he summoned another wave of IMPS and continued summoning it for the next 3 cataclysm, and thats the way i got it, dowm him with the pit lord after dead of 4000k to 414k.

I could not fail to mention that when i killed him the pit lord was with 100k hp uashaushua

I can confirm that Soulstone works in the boss fight. You can use it to get back in the game if you mess up if your Pitlord is still at it, you just need to make sure you don't jump right in at the wrong time and die again.

I've been trying this boss for a while now, read and watched guides and everything but whatever I do I can't down him. My item level is 516 and I've been playing destruction speck. My main issues are the fact that the damage he does is adding up (I don't think as of 5.4 the Pitlord can get aggro on the boss), sometimes imps may survive my rain of fire and the Pitlord's breath, the felhunters have too much health to just quickly dps down and I'm having issues with the gate not always working and I end up taking chaos bolts to the face.

I'm starting to believe no casual player can finish this boss. If you're really good and skilled at playing a lock then you can get your green fire. For me it's just out of reach since I only just started playing a lock. Congrats to the ones who managed to beat the boss, hopefully the quest will be still open in WoD for the ones not as skilled.

Make sure to also bind your Fel Flame Breath macro and Command Demon (for Singe Magic) to easily accessible buttons, since you will be using them almost on cooldown to clear your debuffs. The other macros do not necessarily need to be keybound.

Initial preparations were simply sacrificing my imp, putting up a gateway and my teleport off in the corner nearest to Kanrethad's favorite spot, and making sure my soulstone and my healthstone were up and at full charges. I did not actually use a flask or food on my kill since my doom lord was on cooldown and I was just going to do a practice run for mechanics. More dps helps, of course, but it's not necessary. The only "extra" item I would say is necessary is Purification Potion, since they essentially allow you to double the fight timer.

Beginning Phase
Once ready, begin the rp. As soon as he's attackable, pop your imp swarm, doom guard, dark soul, and dot him up. Very important to note that the imp phase is much easier with your Aura of the Elements up, so as soon as you've got all your dots and a double stack of hand of gul'dan on Kanrethad, I'd put that up too (I put the regular curse on Kanrethad himself because it lasts longer and sometimes you are not in range of him).

When the pit lord comes out be ready to immediately fear it. Kanrethad will just sit there while the pit lord runs around, so you can continue to dps him as hard as you possibly can. Keep an eye on the pit lord - when fear runs out, immediately fear it again. It can take a bit of practice to get the fears right, but I found they really helped. Kanrethad will not start attacking you until halfway through the second fear, and depending on what dot he casts first, you can delay your Curse of Ultimate Doom by a few more precious seconds (make sure to use singe magic or unbound will to clear these first dots off, and from this point on, use them whenever necessary). At this point your second fear will be almost up, and you should go ahead and enslave the Pit Lord.

Imp Phase
Kanrethad will almost immediately move into the first imp phase directly after you enslave the Pit Lord. You should have time to position your demon on the edge of the raised circle directly in front of the large portal, and yourself in between the demon and the portal. Pop metamorphosis and turn on your immolation aura and use your fel flame breath macro - this should take out most of the imps, but I found I often needed to use a second fel flame breath to clean up the last few of them. Pop back out of Meta, since you'll need your fury for the felhunters. Kanrethad will usually cast chaos bolt at this point - use your teleport if possible, since the cooldown on the portal is so long (I saved mine for emergencies and had its entrance on the opposite side of the platform as Kanrethad's usual spot). If you absolutely positively cannot LoS it pop your shield macro - it'll hurt, but you'll live. Kanrethad will then cast Cataclysm - use your charge macro! If possible, try to pre-cast a soulfire or shadow bolt before you charge so you can get a couple of extra hits in while he's stunned.

Felhunter Phase
Ah, the felhunters. Bane of my green firey existence. Okay anyway, they really aren't too hard to deal with if you're careful. The key to these guys is keeping them from seeing the Pit Lord. How I did that is to run straight through the big portal from where Kanrethad is summoning the felhunters (you'll want to be in this position before they come out). You should end up on the skinny floor tile behind the portal, facing your demon, who should still be attacking Kanrethad. As soon as the first felhunter shows up, pop your Cooldown macro, and spam the living daylights out of Touch of Chaos. Make sure to switch to each new felhunter as they come out, since they may not spot you initially.

Your imp swarm should take out at least one of the first two felhunters, if not both, since they'll be low on health from your attacks. The most important thing here though, is not to move. If you move at all, the felhunters will run around and may catch sight of your Pit Lord (and eat his enslave). If this happened to me, it usually spelled a wipe, but sometimes I was able to salvage it by fearing the Pit Lord and finishing off the felhunters. It's very tricky timing though, because Kanrethad will usually chaos bolt you right then, or worse, cataclysm, and if the pit lord is still feared for that there's no saving it. One other thing to mention - using your heal macro here can sometimes attract the attention of the felhunters to your Pit Lord, so try to avoid that unless absolutely necessary.

LoS the Chaos Bolt, use your charge macro on the cataclysm, and get ready for the doom lord.

Doom Lord Phase
The only thing important to do here is to use your enslave macro while Kanrethad is summoning it - make sure to use it twice to get the dismiss/enslave off properly. This refreshes the timer on your enslave, so it's a good idea to do it even if you somehow managed to survive felhunters eating your enslave. Now, one Doom Lord isn't too bad, so I sicced the Pit Lord on him until he had agro, and then ignored it and continued attacking Kanrethad. You will still need to watch out for Chaos Bolt and Cataclysm, but they can be dealt with the exact same way as the previous times. Make sure to put up your aura of elements to get ready for the next imps.

Rinse and Repeat
Imps and felhunters should be dealt with the same way they were the first times. The only problem here is the second Doom Lord. Since there is already a Doom Lord out, dismissing your Pit Lord will immediately give agro back to you, so you need to be able to take a few heavy hits. It was sometimes difficult to give the agro back to the Pit Lord after he was re-enslaved, so be careful and keep an eye on it.

Once the second Doom Lord is out, banish it and keep it banished. From this point on, Kanrethad only summons imps. Try to keep your aura up at all times, since otherwise they can start to pile up. If the absolute worst happens and you die while Kanrethad is low on health, do not panic - if your pit lord is still enslaved, you can actually still command it while dead, and you will still get credit for killing Kanrethad with the Pit Lord.

Following the guide to the letter, I still couldn't quite down him. Usually got to around 20%. I then switched talent from Archimonde's Darkness to Kil'jaedens Cunning, which allowed me to avoid damage while at the same time firing away at him, which made him go down way faster.

Before the talent switch I tried maybe 10-20 times. After the switch, I downed him after 2 tries. I wouldn't attribute it all to the talent switch though, since the first attempts were certainly good for learning the phases, when to teleport, keeping an eye on the DOTs, etc.

One thing I don't believe the guide brought up, unless I missed it, was that you need to keep an eye on reactivating the Demonic Circle, since it only lasts 6 minutes. I did this when I used the gateway to lose aggro from the doomguard, as I was already in the area and the fight was halfway through.

Stage 7 of the scenario you're in (Pursuing the Black Harvest) gives you vendor trash that sells for a good sum of money. Handy for repairs in the final stage (thanks Blizzard!). As many point out, there's a repair anvil right at where you spawn in the final stage. It's worth noting that you can't vendor things there.

decided to do it this weekend. took about 3 hours for the whole quest. 15 to 20 tries. watching vids and reading. and naturally it went nothing like that. I didn't use any macros. my normal destroy spec. I did do the enslave glyph and sacrifice talent. but didn't need to. like every wow raid encounter it's about executing and not about DPS. so practice until you're not panicking. everyone tells you the right way, I'll tell you the wrong ways.

what I did wrong:
a. didn't dial my graphics down - imps lag the ^&*! out of you.
b. moved far away from my LOS teleport range - don't time the chaos bolt, move and teleport.
c. left the imps up for ember generation - the pit lord always moved to the position to breathe on them, so kill them.
d. moved the pit lord on felhunter phase. so I stayed to the right of pit lord near teleport range. in that place they never removed his enslave.
e. tried to squeak in DPS when I should have been moving or readying for adds.
f. didn't watch the dots. they need to go right away.
g. used my embers for DPS. then I saved them for healing, followed by soulburn.
h. left DOTs on if favor of doing something else.

if I had to rank fight mechanics it would be.
1. stop cataclysm
2. LOS chaos bolt.
3. manage health
4. remove DOTs
5. kill or CC adds.
6. DPS boss.

practice solves panic and frustration. set small goals get each phase right.

I just completed this. Took me about 60-70 tries, judging from how many stacks of stat food I went through. Why yes, I am a keyboard-turning, noob clicker.

I mostly followed Benelm's guide, although I couldn't make it work for me at 488. I managed to bump myself up to 522, which really really helped.

Some suggestions I can make from the experience:

1 - Macro anything you think would be useful. For instance, I made a macro to cast Dark Soul: Instability, Curse of Elements, and use Drums of Rage. Nice little kick at the start of the fight. I also macroed Dark Soul and Havoc for the felhunters.

2 - Cleanse whenever possible. The annoying imp and void zone are a pain, manageable when you're on top, but can mean a wipe if you're caught off guard. Fel Flame Breath has a quick enough cooldown that it's never really wasted.

3 - Soulshatter. This is the big one. I used this on the first two imp phases. It helps keep them off you, but what I found was really awesome was that if I balanced dps and aggro, it made a huge difference in the felhunter phase. While my pit lord was off idling on the other side of the platform, Kanrethad was attacking HIM, not me. No debuffs. No chaos bolts. Just quick and easy felhunter kills.

4 - The doomguard will aggro on to the pitlord with just Fel Flame Breath and Demonic Siphon. Use both freely and you won't have to worry much about this guy.

5 - I did not banish the second doom guard. Or fear him. I just let him aggro on to the pitlord and focussed on burning down Kanrethad. It meant the pitlord was pretty low on health by the time Kanrethad went down, but at the point, who cares?

6 - Unbound Will and Demonic Siphon have a great synergy.

7 - Take any advantage you can. Drums of Rage, Drums of Forgotten Kings, stat food, Grimoire of Sacrifice. I did try pre-potting the fight with Potion of the Jade Serpent, but I found that it seemed to prevent me from using the purification potion when the curse ticked down.

8 - Purification potions are amazing.

I've recently completed this on my Warlock (Akadava, EU-Lightbringer) and have to say I'm a few thousand gold lighter for the priviledge. It's an awesome fight, even if it is extremely frustrating.

I had an ilvl of around 508.

Here's some tips I can offer;

1. Stay calm and don't panic!
If you stay calm, you're able to react better to things. If you panic, you'll do stupid stuff like moving away from your Gateway when the Fel Hounds spawn. Relax and enjoy the experience.

2. This isn't a DPS race
Well, it technically is due to his Curse of Ultimate Doom, but this isn't about how much damage you can pump out. It's about mechanics. I didn't use Flasks or food buffs or potions...

3. Aggro, aggro, aggro!
Use your Demonic Gateway and Soulshatter on CD. If you manage your aggro properly, you won't have to LoS his Chaos Bolts. I would say if you can't drop aggro in the first minute of the fight, wipe it and start again.

4. There are only two Fel Hound phases!
I never finished watching video guides because they all said he repeats the cycle (Imps, Hounds, Doomlord). But you can relax once you've survived the second Fel Found phase as he'll just make every new phase an Imp phase.

Did this yday on 512 ilvl. due to the gateway nerf u'd want to use pit lord's heal and breath more often and LoS every single chaos bolt.

Imo the key for this fight is finding the best positioning that matches ur playstyle the best. I used my demonic portal to LoS chaos bolts and my demonic gateway to cross all over the room after I LoS the pit lord off from felhunters.

Just a quick note about his curses - you want to dispell the Seed of Terrible Destruction no matter what, believe me. The Imp can kill you by stunning you right when you need to LoS Kanrethad's CB. But the real pain is the vortex that can pop up. It pushes you away from itself, if you move when it is cast, and if you happen to stay inside, it will suck you in, making escape quite a challenge. Not too bad you say? Well, it pushed me out from behind the pillar about 15 times, right for the Chaos Bolt. I bet you dont want this stuff to happen, so try to dispel everything with Fel Breath or using the devoured Imp.

I just defeated him at ilevel 489.

You don't need raid gear to do this. I did it with a mix of dungeon blues and badge gear. Enchants, an epic BOE and consumables were pricey, however. So was the book itself.

There are a lot of good guides and videos, but in most of them their gear level is high enough that they don't have to worry about dying to enrage. So they just concentrate on boss mechanics. The most helpful video guide I found was done by Adam Becker. I can't post links since this is a new account, but it's on YouTube.

Besides maximizing DPS, the only tricky part is handling Fel Hunters. It's hard to recover from a botched Fel Hunter phase if your DPS is low due to gear, so try to learn the technique in the YouTube guide posted by Serious. Someone else in this thread linked to it.

The Fel Hunters all die in literally just a few seconds, even with crappy gear, but you have to time it just right with the Pit Lord's stun. The Fel Hunter phase is the least forgiving, but thankfully they only come out twice.

Here are the most important things to keep in mind if your gear is as bad as mine:

Keep your imp out when the fight starts so he can help DPS.
Fear the Pit Lord for a full 20 seconds before enslaving him. You need all the DPS you can get. The boss won't start DOT'ing you until you enslave the Pit Lord. Don't forget to sac the imp before enslaving!
Stun the boss as he first casts Curse of Ultimate Doom to give yourself a little extra time in the encounter. You will need every second. Hit him with a Chaos Bolt while he's stunned. His cast is too fast to allow you to precast a Chaos Bolt before you get the stun off, so you will only get one big hit here.
Stun the boss on the imp phase as shown in the tutorial by Serious so you can hit him hard with two Chaos Bolts.
You must maximize DPS during all stuns by precasting Chaos Bolt so the first one lands just as the stun hits. You will be able to get a second Chaos Bolt off before the stun wears off. If you do this with every stun, you're doing about 1,000,000 damage total in Chaos Bolts alone at ilevel 489. And you need all the damage you can get to beat the enrage timer. At low gear levels, there will be too much health left for the Pit Lord to finish off the boss if you die to enrage. Soulstones don't help much, since you will aggro everything as soon as you rez.
Stun the Fel Hunters once all 3 are out. If you can't get it right because your computer is old or your connection is bad, you can glyph for Havoc to get off 2 Chaos Bolts, which should be enough to kill two of them without the stun's damage bonus. The Fel Hunters don't hit too hard, but keep an eye on the boss's DOT's and Chaos Bolts if you choose to kill them slowly.
Make sure you always have at least 2 embers for each Cataclysm. Precast Chaos Bolt before you stun so you can get a second off during the stun.
Turn down all your graphics settings to the lowest possible levels. That was the only way I could get the Fel Hunters down. It also helps during the imp phases, which are pretty graphics intensive.
Don't be cheap with gems, enchants and consumables. If you're not decked out in raid gear, you will need all of them.
Save your Doomguard for execute range. Adam Becker's video opens with it, but if your gear is bad, you need the extra 20% damage it does when the boss is below 20% health.

Part 1...

Hopefully this can help someone get their green fire tonight before 1am PST. Here's exactly what I ended up doing in as much detail as possible. This is broken into 2 parts, because it is very long...

Addons:

As few as possible. I also turned down my spell effects and shadows to medium...just in case. I did use Deadly Boss Mods, mainly for the countdown timer it gives before the fight. This helped me know when to pre-pot with Jade Serpent Potion.

Glyph of Gateway Attunement- (makes using your Demonic Gateway much easier)
Glyph of Verdant Spheres- (this slot is a freebie; I chose Verdant Spheres so that I had another visual cue that showed how many Burning Embers I had)

Talents:
Tier 1 - Soul Leech (passive shield, very awesome, arguably the best choice)

Tier 2 - Shadowfury (great for dealing with Felhunter phase if something goes wrong and reducing the incoming damage from all those Imps during the Imp phase)

Tier 3 - Sacrificial Pact (absolutely KEY to the strategy I used; used EVERY time it is off CD, because phases are almost exactly 1min apart)

Tier 4 - Unbound Will (I didn't end up using it during my successful run, or more than once or twice during all of my horribly unsuccessful runs; Soul Link is arguably much, much better, and is passive, so it's one less thing to manage)

Tier 5 - Grimoire of Sacrifice (no other option, since you will be controlling the Pit Lord instead of one of your own demons; either you take 15% damage and 2% health regen/5sec or you get nothing, really)

Tier 6 - Kil'Jaeden's Cunning (the fight is very mobile, and I would argue that this definitely helps you maximize DPS on Kanrethad and build embers faster when you aren't in the Imp phase; Mannoroth's Fury could probably be argued, though, since it will make the Imp phase go a bit faster -- but the Imp phase is already pretty fast)

Buffs/Consumables:

-Dark Intent (Class Buff)
-Tangy Yogurt (Basic lvl90 +200 haste food; just my preference, +INT is a much, much better choice)
-Flask of the Warm Sun (+1000int for 1hr, or 2hrs if you are an alchemist; persists through death!)
-Unending Breath (dummy buff applied last; fairly certain it helps to prevent the Felhunters from eating another of your buffs, like Dark Intent)
-Potion of the Jade Serpent (used once, for pre-potting before fight)
-Purification Potion (to wipe Ultimate Doom if you can't kill him in under 7min)
-Soulstone (if it's off cooldown, might as well)

Pre-Fight Prep and Circle/Gateway Usage:

This will be described from the viewpoint of the player as if they were standing in the middle of the grate (through which you can see the Den of Mortal Delights) and facing Kanrethad's portal. Kanrethad's portal would be 12 o'clock.

Portal Placement - I placed my Demonic Gateway to the right of the rightmost pillar behind Kanrethad's gate. I stood at outer edge of the translucent grate at about 2 o'clock. The Gateway should be dropped as close to the wall behind the pillar as possible. Now walk over behind the rightmost pillar and place your Demonic Circle: Summon just to the left of your Demonic Gateway. Remember that Demonic Gateway is a Line of Sight skill. So immediately when you arrive on the other end you will still need to walk over to where you put your Demonic Circle: Summon in order to be out of LoS of Kanrethad's Chaos Bolt. Conversely, Demonic Circle: Teleport is *not* a Line of Sight skill. Therefore, if/when you use Demonic Circle: Teleport to deal with Kanrethad's Chaos Bolt, then you will already be out of LoS. I found it best to alternate between the two, since Kanrethad's Chaos Bolts sometimes came more frequently than once per minute - and the debuff on Demonic Gateway is a full minute. You will be VERY sad if you depend solely on Demonic Gateway, because eventually you'll walk onto/into your Gateway and nothing will happen and you'll be too far away to use Demonic Circle: Teleport before Chaos Bolt hits. So I'd advise getting used to alternating between the two to deal with going out of LoS of the Chaos Bolts. This also means that you will want to spend the majority of the fight in the upper left quadrant, since you will need to be in range of either your Demonic Gateway or your Demonic Circle: Teleport at a moment's notice. Train your brain to only try to move about in this quadrant for the entirety of the fight.

Pre-Potting:
This is the main reason I used Deadly Boss Mods. The countdown timer it provides makes it easy to pre-pot with a Potion of the Jade Serpent.

Part 2...

Phase 0:
This is the phase of the fight where you can attack Kanrethad, but he isn't attacking you. Here was my sequence. Pre-pot with Potion of the Jade Serpent 1sec before combat starts, then cast Curse of Elements, then cast Summon Doomguard. Then I cast Conflagrate x2, and then Immolate. The reason for this was because I have 4 passive procs (Light Embroidery, Yu'lon's Bite, Mithril Pocke%^&*ch, and Jade Spirit). I would prefer that the procs were active when I begin using my Incinerates or Chaos Bolts, right? Well, Curse of Elements, Conflag x2, Immolate -- and maybe Summon Doomguard -- each give a chance to get those procs active before I start nuking. If 2 or 3 procs are up, I cast 3x Incinerate. Now all 4 procs are probably active, so toss a Chaos Bolt. Keep nuking and pay attention when he starts summoning the Pit Lord. Time your final cast (Immolation or Incinerate probably) so that it finishes JUST as the Pit Lord materializes and then just click your Fear Pit Lord macro and resume DPS on Kanrethad for about 20sec longer. You'll get a feel for when the Pit Lord's fear will wear off and how many spells you can cast before he comes for you. This part is VERY IMPORTANT, because *BEFORE* you enslave the Pit Lord you need to use Grimoire of Sacrifice to gain the 15% damage buff and 2% health/5sec buff, as well as Singe Magic, which will cleanse a DoT/Debuff from you *and* heal you. It will vary how far he is from you when Fear breaks, so if he's very close, then maybe don't throw out that extra Incinerate or Immolate and just stand there for 1-2sec, pop Grimoire of Sacrifice and then click your Enslave Pit Lord macro. Immediately tell the Pit Lord to attack Kanrethad and use his Fel Breath. Begin moving towards Kanrethad and stay on the opposite side of the Pit Lord, so that when you use your Fel Breath (cleanse) macro it will damage Kanrethad while cleansing your DoTs. He will cast Ultimate Doom, then probably Seed of Destruction. Wipe the Seed immediately with Singe Magic, then wait for his next 2 DoTs and immediately use your Fel Breath (cleanse) macro. Try to use all of your Burning Embers DPSing Kanrethad before Phase 1 starts. Ideally you go into Phase 1 empty on Embers. Now he should begin summoning Imps for Phase 1 and you have no DoTs on you (except Ultimate Doom). Move the Pit Lord over near Kanrethad's gate...

Phase 1:
Target an Imp and tell your Pit Lord to attack it, then use his Fel Breath. Pop Sacrificial Pact to shield you from the incoming damage from the Imps. Throw down 3 Rain of Fire in front of the gate, then once the final pack of Imps appears, have the Pit Lord CHARGE an Imp, which will stun them all and make them take double damage, then use his Fel Breath again. Drop 1 more Rain of Fire and no more Imps. At this point, you've got DoTs on you, so hit Singe Magic instinctively and begin moving near your Demonic Gateway. DPS Kanrethad until he casts Chaos Bolt, then use your Demonic Gateway to LoS it. In flight I usually tell the Pit Lord to go back to attacking Kanrethad. Come back out and use Singe Magic again to wipe a buff, then use the Fel Breath (cleanse) macro to wipe your DoTs. You should easily have 4 Burning Embers now due to the Imp phase. You can burn 2 here and easily do 1.8-2.2mil damage (or more) in one go with 2 Chaos Bolts. As you see Kanrethad move to the center for Cataclysm pop Conflag x2. Begin casting the first Chaos Bolt and about 1sec before it hits, use your Pit Lord Charge Kanrethad macro, then immediately cast your 2nd Chaos Bolt. This will ensure that both Chaos Bolts hit for 2x damage during the stun. Don't get too crazy, though, make sure you save 2 Burning Embers for Phase 2. You will have DoTs on you again, so Singe Magic and use the Fel Breath (cleanse) macro to wipe them so that you can enter Phase 2 w/o DoTs. After you cleanse DoTs with the Pit Lord IMMEDIATELY send him over to the far LEFT edge of Kanrethad's gate.

Phase 2:
Position yourself on the right side of the gate and drop a Rain of Fire just before the first Fel Hunter appears. To play it safe, pop Sacrificial Pact for a shield, so the Fel Hounds don't chew you up. When Fel Hunter #1 appears cast Conflag on him, then cast Havoc on him. Now target Fel Hunter #2 and cast Chaos Bolt on him immediately. Now target Fel Hunter #3 as he appears and cast Conflag, then immediately cast Chaos Bolt on Fel Hunter #3. Before the Chaos Bolt finishes its cast, use the Pit Lord's Charge ability on Fel Hunter #3, then use his Fel Breath. At this point, all 3 Fel Hunters are either dead, or at <50k. Backlash probably proc'd, so you have an instant Incinerate for one of them. If you have the Embers, you can Shadowburn, too. Either way, the Fel Hunters should no longer be a problem. Singe Magic to wipe a DoT and get within distance of your Demonic Circle: Teleport and DPS Kanrethad. Feel free to blow any Embers you have on Chaos Bolts, because you don't need any embers for Phase 3. LoS his Chaos Bolt with your Demonic Circle: Teleport, then Singe Magic if it's up, go back out to the center and DPS Kanrethad while using the Fel Breath (cleanse) macro to keep DoTs off of you. Use the Pit Lord Charge to stop Cataclysm. Now, before the Doomguard appears, move about 20yds away from your Pit Lord and tap your Enslave Pit Lord macro. The first click will dismiss him. Click it again immediately and it re-Enslave your Pit Lord for another 5min. You also have the option now to use your Purification Potion, if you are free of all DoTs except Ultimate Doom. Kanrethad will re-apply Ultimate Doom once the Doomguard appears, but that still gives you 7 more minutes w/o worry. Whatever you choose, keep DPSing until the Doomguard appears.

Phase 3:
Once the Doomguard materializes, simply tell your Pit Lord to attack the Doomguard, then cast a Fel Breath onto it. Then just put your Pit Lord back onto the boss. Stand near your Demonic Gateway and DPS Kanrethad; again, feel free to blow all your Burning Embers here on DPS. Use the Gateway to LoS his Chaos Bolt, Singe Magic, return to the center, Fel Breath (cleanse) to wipe your DoTs, Charge to stop the Cataclysm, then move your Pit Lord over near the gate in preparation for Phase 1 again.

Phase 1 (2? 3?)...Part Deux:
Scenario #1 - You are awesome and Kanrethad is down to 20% health already? Just pop Sacrifical Pact, toss 2 or 3 Rain of Fire onto the Imps, then Shadowfury to stun them, then 1 or 2 more Rain of Fire. You should be at or near 3 Burning Embers now, so use the Pit Lord Charge on Kanrethad and spam Shadowburn as the Imps replenish your Burning Embers and Kanrethad takes 2x damage from your Shadowburns. Congratulations on your Green Fire. =)

Scenario #2 - You don't have awesome raid gear or you haven't been DPSing optimally, so he's not quite at 20%. No problem, just stay calm and the phases one more time. Target an Imp and tell your Pit Lord to attack it, then use his Fel Breath. Pop Sacrificial Pact to shield you from the incoming damage from the Imps. Throw down 3 Rain of Fire in front of the gate, then once the final pack of Imps appears, have the Pit Lord CHARGE an Imp, which will stun them all and make them take double damage, then use his Fel Breath again. Drop 1 more Rain of Fire and no more Imps. Go through the 2nd rounds of Phase 2 and Phase 3 just as before. After the 2nd round of Phase 3 you should have him down to 20% or very close. The nice thing is that at this point you will ONLY SEE PHASE 1 over and over. So no more Felhunters or Doomguards to deal with. Now all you have is fuel for your Shadowburns. You will still have to deal with cleansing DoTs with Singe Magic/Fel Breath and Chaos Bolt, so don't get too obsessed with trying to Shadowburn him down that you don't notice a Chaos Bolt and die. Time is still on your side at this point, even if you're doing crummy DPS or have crummy gear, since you've re-enslaved your Pit Lord and cleansed Kanrethad's first Ultimate Doom. You've probably got another 2min until your enslave demon wears off and 5min until Ultimate Doom kills you. If the Doomguards aggro you because of all the AoE you've been throwing out, then just pop Soulshatter and they'll leave you alone. However it plays out, congratulations on your Green Fire. =)

As it stands I spent all night last night wiping on bugged chaos bolts :(

Eventually when I got everything else down every fight ended in a LoS bug and him continuing his CB cast even with a pillar between us. :(

Stupid me, didnt realise I could also just use my CDs to eat them. (My lock is only an alt I rarely play, so not too bothered about missing the title)

Kanrethad is easily killable at 100 or possibly 90 with an ilvl of 580 or more. I managed to down him with no macros and no potions as both demonology and affliction before the beta servers were taken down on november 3rd. my talents for the interested parties, Demonology: Soul Leech, Shadowfury, Sac-Pact, Burning Rush, Go-Syn, Arch-Dark.
Affliction: Harvest Life (just had it didnt need it or soul leech), Mortal Coil (unused) Sac-Pact, Burning Rush, Gosac, Arch-Dark.

-Kanrethad only has 1m-1.2m hp now. silly right? my warlock was also level 100 doing this-

Fight #1 Demonology; Demonology has Go synergy now instead of gosac. I'm fairly certain synergy works with the enslaved anyway. I had imp out for basic early damage and hit him with corruption hand of guldan soulfires and shadow bolts. dismissed imp when he started summoning the pit lord and dpsed him till it spawned then enslaved him. by this time kanrethad only had 900k hp left, about 70% of his hp. then just normal kanrethad fight, charge the cata and portal for the chaos bolt. (I would not reccomend tanking the chaosbolt It still does a crapton of damage). he got his imps and I cataclysmed them (its a good spell) and by that point he was dead.

Fight#2 Affliction: sacced my imp threw my dots on him, popped my mastery. he was dead before he could fire off his chaos bolt. Affliction cut kanrethad like a hot knife through butter. just WoW.

Just wanted to let people know that I did successfully beat him as Affliction, ilvl 480, GNOME (long live the gnomes). It was on 11/4/2014 and I did get the achievement and title.

Affliction was much easier than destro in my opinion. Drain life was invaluable. There are amazing guides out there and I followed them for the most part, but a few notes for Affliction locks.

-To get the Imps down, obviously use your pit lord to cleave/breath on them, but also burn a soul shard to put affliction dot on all imps using seed of corruption. This will easily finish off the straggler imps in case the breath didn't get them all. Never had trouble with imps after doing this, so always save a shard for imp phase. .

-With felhounds, just send your pit lord way the hell behind a wall/pillar right after the cataclysm spell, soulshatter, and the Kanrethad will follow him over there and leave you alone while you dot/burn the felhounds. (there is a little area to the right you can send your pit lord behind a wall, then go way to the left of the portal to fight the felhunters...

-Maybe save "Dark Soul:Misery" cooldown for felhounds.

-Target-Self Macro for the pit-lord cleaning breath is a MUST.

Good news everyone! You can still kill this miserable punk in 6.0.x and get your achievement and title. As of this writing, there's only a week left, so you had better get cracking! Still, it was only a couple days ago my Breaker of the Black Harvest was level 70 and in dire need of rapid-fire questing, gearing madness, and an epic run of a scenario that was both amazing, and hard enough to induce all seven Sha in the player.

I won't bore you with the getting there. Suffice to say my Warlock got to an ilvl of 517 -- higher than a lot of people report, but by no means "good" by modern standards. The first stages of the scenario (including its earlier boss) were challenging, but nothing prepared me for what was to come on the summit of the Black Temple.

I actually ended up killing this boss twice today -- I will warn you that I had about a thousand gold in repair bills before formulating a strategy and blew around a thousand more after. Even having dropped him once it took me north of 10 tries to get the second kill. That said, it works: the second kill is my proof that it wasn't just a fluke of luck.

In both cases, I did this as Destruction. While I think it could be pulled off by another spec, I don't know how they'd handle the fel hunter waves (the real problem, in my frustratingly comprehensive experience), so I'd recommend doing the same

The following Talents/Glyphs are Mission Critical:

Grimoire of Sacrifice: You will be enslaving a Pit Lord for this fight, so you don't get your demon minion (a big reason to NOT attempt this as demonology).
Glyph of Enslave Demon: Halves the cast time of Enslave Demon. This will save your life
Unbound Will: Cleansing debuffs is very important, and Unbound Will is the best panic button you will have.

I used these Talents/Glyphs as well:
Soul Leech (More health for you is more better)
Soul Link (Same logic)
Shadowfury (Possibly useful on the imps, but really there's nothing at this tier)
Archimonde's Darkness (It's basically a static damage boost at the start of the fight, which is safer and more reliable than trying to get cute with either of the other talents)
Glyph of Healthstone (Damage in this fight tends to come in spikes, so a larger heal over time is better than a smaller instant heal)
Glyph of Ember Tap (Same Logic)
Glyph of Siphon Life (Are you noticing a pattern? Ebonlocke's damage is awful. Mitigate it.)

The following Macros saved my life

THE SETUP
Stand on the metal grate on the summit and look at the Soulwell. You will see three curved pillars behind it. Walk to the right hand side of the rightmost of those pillars -- we need to do things here. Tuck yourself back in the corner and get yourself mentally prepared for the battle.

Get your basic buffs up -- Dark Intent, any flasks or similar effects you may have, and so on (I did not have any alchemical benefits). Conjure yourself a healthstone, soulstone yourself, and summon your Imp and sacrifice it -- this gets you the ability "Sear Magic", accessable through the Command Demon spell, It's rather important as a safety net, so make sure it's on your bar.

Now, toss a Demonic Gateway as far into the main platform as you can without leaving the back corner and summon a demonic circle. Since your circle only lasts 6 minutes, the clock is ticking, so run out and start the fight by interacting with the soulwell.

THE FIGHT
Kanrethad comes out and monologues at you for a bit. You could try to tell him you just want your fire to be shiny and green, but he's convinced you want to stop him from enslaving all life on Azeroth, so I guess you will. When he says "I'd like to see you try", he's able to be attacked. Use the start of the fight to pour on as much damage as you can. My benchmark was to peg him with at least two Chaos Bolts before he finishes his first cast -- Summon Pit Lord -- while keeping a Burning Ember in reserve. This under the effects of Dark Soul as well.

As soon as Kanrethad finishes summoning his Pit Lord, Fear the blighter (The macro I supplied earlier saves on targeting and retargeting issues.) Kanrethad will stare at you like an idiot until you enslave the thing, so this gets you another 20 seconds (conveniently the length of a Dark Soul activation -- see why I took two?) to dps him before he makes you run around and react. The instant fear wears off, though, enslave the Pit Lord: word on the street is that trying to fear it twice will glitch the encounter, so I didn't even try.

Kanrethad becomes active once you enslave the Pit Lord. He'll cast Curse of Ultimate Doom on you, which is the fight's enrage timer. If you have issues with it, a Purification Potion can remove it, but I never had trouble. He will use a number of abilities and summon waves of demons.

Your new Pit Lord has three abilities you need to manage: a charge that stuns your target and causes it to take double damage for a while, a blood drop that causes it to heal you for tons (use as often as possible), and a felfire breath that you want to stand in because it purges you of debuffs (Very important) Additionally, you will need to use the basic "move to" order at least once.

Kanrethad's abilities are...

> Some basic attack spells you pretty much have to soak
> A "Massive Chaos Bolt" -- this is what the demonic circle and gateway are for. It will kill you instantly, so get out of line of sight by hopping to that back corner I had you set up in
> An Agony variant that lasts a LONG time. You'll be dispelling yourself often and it doesn't do much at first so ignore it
> A seed that will do HORRIBLE things if its ~13ish second duration expires. Purge this by any means necessary (preferably the pit lord's breath). Remember the duration is long enough to Sear Magic twice if you're on the ball and the first one takes an Agony.
> Rain of Fire. Don't stand in it.
> Cataclysm. It's basically game over, so it must be interrupted by the Pit Lord's Charge. Save Charge for this in most cases.

The Waves of Demons, In Order, Are...

> 60 imps. Drop rain of fire over the portal, activate Fire and Brimstone, and kill them with your basic moves. You should actually gain embers on this.
> 3 Fel Hunters. This is the worst thing. Before the summoning actually starts, send your pit lord to the left and stand next to the portal's right edge yourself. Rain of fire to get their attention. Drop Havoc on the first, Chaos Bolt the second to kill them both, and have your Pit Lord Charge the third. This is the only time you will use charge on something other than a Cataclysm.
> 1 Doom Lord. Use Soulshatter and have your Pit Lord pick up its aggro. Summon your own Doom Lord if you're in a decent position, as either Kanrethad is not long for this world or you aren't.
> Repeat from Imps, but just burn boss and try to not die.

Ideally, Kanrethad will die before the second Fel Hunter wave. If you get past the first, you're pretty good (hence why the Doom Lord is summoned after it)

Pro tip: Died at about 10-12% but the Pit Lord that you enslave still stays alive and the fight is still active which means that he can actually kill the boss. Just control him and you will be able to dps the boss down for his remaining HP. This only works if you manage to get past the Fel Hunter phase at least since they are the only ones that can dispel the enslave demon effect that is on the Pit Lord.

Completed this 2.5 hours before WoD came out, and without enough gold on my warlock for another repair!

What finally did it for me were the following:

- Always move out of his rain of fire IMMEDIATELY. You don't want green fire enough to stand in it.

- When he's going to summon Felhunters, pit lord cleanse and heal, move far enough to the left to be able to send pit lord out-of-sight behind the left-hand pillar, then move to the right, while casting Rain of Fire at the portal to be able to pick up felhunters as they come out. Use Singe Magic to cleanse as needed, Lifestone to heal, and remember the chaos bolt is coming all too soon, so be ready.

- Learn his patterns so you can anticipate his next move, especially felhunter summons (above), chaos bolts (have to be close enough to your Demonic Circle to port to safety), and cataclysm (have to be close enough to him to have Pit Lord Charge him),

- Learn to survive imps with near full health (aoe dps, ember taps, unending resolve if needed, and remembering to cleanse and heal and stay out of fire)

- Always cleanse seed of ultimate destruction. Don't worry as much about the curse of agony, but cleanse it, too.

- When he summons Doom Guard, soul shatter so the doom guard attacks your pit lord. This was easier and more effective than banishing the doom guard.

- When he gets to 30% summon your doom guard for extra dps.

Compared to videos I watched (which came from before the pre-WoD patches), the reduced health was a big problem (eating a chaos bolt is not an option, imp and felhunter round DPS are much more significant), and soulstone res would either end the encounter or the low health, re-enslave, and loss of demonic circle and singe magic were too much of a setback to finish.

If you're level 100, no need to waste time looking up strategies. I just stomped him to the floor at ilvl 635, never even got past the first Fel Imps phase.

If you do not have the WoD expansion and are trying this at 90 I recommend you equip boas along with other gear slots that do not take damage.

This will let you learn the mechanics of the fight without going broke!

In case anybody had any fear lingering about the difficulty of this quest, I just zonked him at 675 ilvl. I had the opportunity to enslave his demon and the fight lasted about 5 seconds after that.

No need to move the pet out of range of the magic eaters.
No need to fear his chaos bolt (did about 50k).
No need to bother with his imps (they don't summon anyways).
No need to leave your teleport behind a wall.

I just wanted to comment, I did this earlier with my lv 91 warlock, full mythic and 705 weapon + 715 trinket and 715 helm. The fight ended before he was finished talking, if you're a lv 100 you should have 0 problems killing him, I guess with the item squish and all that it should be easy on lv 90 as well, he has indeed been nerfed a lot compared to the first health squish which he received as he had a lot more hp compared to now, hence it took more time to kill him but at 915k you don't have that problem anymore.

I just did Green Fire at level 100 at 707 ilvl. I started my warlock pretty late in MoP and never attempted this quest until now. I was going into this fight expecting there to still be some mechanics I had to learn, but I just nuked him down. DBM was telling me to enslave the pit lord, but I couldn't see anything to enslave. And then the fight was over.

The hardest part of this scenario is now figuring out you have to use Eye of Kilrogg to guide you past the maze in Step 4.

As of BFA, I can now confirm that he is 100% soloable to any 120 Warlocks doing the Green Fire Questline.

All it took was one Chaos Bolt and he was down to 1%. Didn't have to worry about the Pit Lords or anything.

Definitely worth the wait for me. Haha! :D

For anyone that may be curious, it doesn't seem possible to do this at the new level 90 (35). For one, you do not have banish (req. level 46), gateway (req. 49), demonic circle/tele (41) or shadowfury (38). I figured I would give it a try despite not having a lot of crucial things because I enjoy a good challenge. I farmed up a tome, did the quests and the solo encounter right up until Kanrethad. I got as far as the first chaos bolt and immediately died. Nothing I did gave me even remotely the amount of hp I would need to be able to tank that ability once per minute. For reference it hit me for 12k, and my level 36 warlock has 3.7k hp.

Sad that I can't do this as a challenge because of tuning/how leveling works now but I guess I can just come back on this lock at a higher level.

If anyone is curious about how things stand in 10.1.5:

At level 36 I turned off Chromie Time and he demolished me.

At level 44 I turned off Chromie Time and he was at 1% before beginning to summon the first pit lord.
