It may seem random, but actually the Yaks will be found to be the following (in this order):

Mean
Smelly
Angry
Stabby
Mean Angry
Stabby Smelly
Angry Stabby
Mean Smelly
Mean, Smelly, Angry, Stabby, Very Bad Townlong Yak
Suitable Yak

So, basically... kill 9 yaks, the 10th will be the best.

Does this remind anyone else of the children's book: "Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day?" :)

If questing in a group, designate one person to test out yaks. Everyone gets credit, even if one person is testing the harness on them to find the good one.

Edit: Down voting correct information is the stuff of Thottbot. If you're questing in a group, it makes no sense to have to find more yaks than you need too. This is time saving. Group up with a friend (if you have any) or a guildmate and try it. The only reason this should be getting down voted is if it's no longer working or true. I personally tried this and the healer in my party didn't interact with a single yak, yet got credit when I interacted with the 10th one and got credit for the quest.

Do the quest in one go. If you wander off for too long or log off, you have to start at the mean yak all over again.

You can run away to reset the yak, which saves on a lot of time spent killing - it'll still move on to the next step in the chain even if you don't actually kill it. (You can also just keep lassoing the same yak this way!)

This looks looks to me like Blizzard is parodying the mechanics of their own game Diablo. In this game you have elite mobs that can gain powers taken from a random pool of abilities such as 'extra strong' , 'fast' , 'multiple shot', 'ligthtining enchanted' and so forth.

So this quest doesnt lead to anything? I just completed it and there wasnt anything more, no follow up, not even a reward.

Druids can cast Flight Form at the end of the lasso cast and fly up, immediately breaking combat.

I forget if it's the mean or angry yak, but one of them has a knockback ability. Some of the fields are right along a ledge overlooking the sea. Don't be like me and lasso one right by the edge only to get knocked all the way down! Otherwise, you truly will have a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day!

After reading all the comments, it's clear that there's no reason to do this quest except as part of the initiation process to a fraternity you're better off not joining. I know, you masochists are about to take issue with this so it's all yours. You're welcome.

Really surprised this information isn't here, but in order for this quest to appear you must complete the two quests:

The Motives of the Mantid

And

Set the Mantid Back

Both from Tai Ho at Shando-Pan Garrison (49,72).

He'll give you a quest afterwards called The Wisdom of Niuzao. Just fly over to the turn in (you don't actually have to turn it in), and accept the quest from Bluesaddle (standing right next to the turn in) called Bad Yak. Do that real quick and he'll appear at 35,57 with this quest.
