Step into the purple circles on the ground, this will prompt scrolls to appear in the ui that you can click on.

Note: This releases arcane orb things that damage you. They are easy to avoid.

I had a bit of trouble with this quest (causing my gear to turn red and having to leave the instance group). I completed this as an arcane mage with ilvl 700 gear (PVP- Warmongering Gladiator's Regalia) so I thought I might just point out what I did.

Keep in mind that I wrote this during beta and it might not be accurate when Live comes out.

Note: I forgot what the steps were called so I might have skipped a few/I didn't think that they were important to note.

For step 1 of the scenario, you need to battle 3 mages (each a different spec. It goes fire, then frost, then arcane). I don't really have any tips for the fire or arcane mage except to counterspell a lot but for the frost mage, you can avoid the ice barriers by blinking behind that caster.

Step 2: I used blink a lot to avoid the disturbances on the ground (they look like arcane torrents but they shoot you skyward and cause you to lose health). There's also this weird shimmery purple stuff on the ground you want to avoid because it acts like a barrier. You'll also come across arcane wraths. What I did was stand behind the floor barrier thingy and kill the wraths before blinking across.

Step 3: You'll come across an arcane elemental. The only big thing to really worry about (in my case) were the arcane orbs that came around and knocked you away. Those can be pretty easily avoided. During mid health, he puts up some sort of ice block that stops him from casting or moving. I put most of my damage at that time.

Step 4: Just kill the mobs and run to the other side but don't leave the dragon behind since you need him to fly you to the other side (and don't fall off).

Step 6??: (Nexus-Prince Bilaal): He has two main spells: force of gravity, which will move you backwards like Roltall in Bloodmaul Slag Mines does in heroic, and some kind of casting spell (forgot the name). During force of gravity, he doesn't do any damage so if you need to, do your healing (ice block/gift of the naaru/etc) then. Note: there's a certain point where his force of gravity doesn't move you backward anymore if you're standing on the bridge.

Step 7: @Grogg says it above. If you try to kill the orb things floating around it, they'll just respawn so the best thing is to dodge them/blink around them.

You may find this boss easier if you lower your own Item Level. Like the Proving Grounds, the encounter scales to your own power. I had major problems until I removed some of my gear.

- Keep your: Helm, Chest, Legs, Trinkets, and Weapon. Remove everything else and put it in your bags. This will knock his HP down by a lot.
- Spec into Cold Snap and Mirror Images if you aren't. You'll need some ways to heal yourself and do burst damage.
- Keep Supernova and Counterspell for interrupts. Always interrupt his channelled spell.
- Do not fight on the platform. Get on the bridge and stand at max range. If he pulls you in go back there. His gravity attack doesn't reach all the way to the middle bridge.
- Pre-pot, Arcane Power, Mirror Images and Timewarp. He will start losing chunks of HP. During Gravity he doesn't attack, so if you need to heal you can Iceblock up to 2x times to recover.

Managed to kill him with 70%~ hp leftover after miserably failing 10+ times prior. Lowering your item level is what makes the difference, his damage is overtuned.

Nuggets of Advice From An Actual Idiot Who Made it Through This Scenario Despite of This Disadvantage

So, after failing so hard at this scenario that all my gear had turned red and I was doing nothing more than the magical equivalent of prodding Beliaal with a soft pillow, I had to concede and port out for repairs and existential angst. I read up on the scanario (thank you Onyx1831!), and discovered that I had been a bigger idiot than my usual standard. (Also, if you port out, you start the scenario again at the beginning)

Here are my head-earned pieces of advice:

In general:

1) Remember which class you're playing. This may seem trivial, but I'm sure there are many of us collecting artifacts on different toons like crazed hoarders at a yard sale right now, so just keep your mage-ness in mind. (In my case that meant don't go near the flipping bad guys, you're ranged.

2) Rest and eat when you can. My poor little BE had to work her way through so many Conjured Mana Bun you would think I was some sort of demented feeder.

3) Upgrade Ice Block as your talent. If, like myself, you didn't think of this beforehand, don't panic and use one of the Tome of the Tranquil Mind you got with your Dalaran Hearthstone.

4) Use Ice Block, Ice Barrier, Counterspell and whatever defensive capabilities you have until you feel ashamed of yourself. Then use them again.

Specifics:

Stage one
I accidentally triggered Time Warp right before running in to face these %^&*!@#s, and whaddaya know, it was pretty effective! You don't need it until Beliaal anyway, so you might make it as painless as possible for yourself.

Stage don't-stand-there
Blink and take it slow. No need to go all Jenkins with a half-full healthbar. Arcane Missiles hurt, ok?

Stage don't-just-stand-there-and-take-is-like-a-penitent-sinner-accepting-the-wrath-of-an-angered-god
When the big, angry elemental starts shooting big orbs at you just @#$%ing move. As a recovering idiot, I didn't the first time and consequently died. A lot. Just move out of the way and they won't follow you.

Stage don't die
Normally when you die in these scenarios (I have the experience; trust me) they are quite forgiving and the mobs remain at whatever health you hacked them down to before your demise, but that is not the case with Beliaal. Throw everything and the kitchen sink at him, and if when your health is low, remember your defensive capabilities (Ice Block, Ice Barrier and I found Shieldtronic Shield to be super useful).

Stage %^&*!@# staff
Just get under the domes. Shouldn't be a problem.

Congratulations, you now have your staff. It's great, but I don't trust it not to betray us at some point, as it has some serious attitude.

I just finished my third and final artifact. I went in this order: Fire, Frost, Arcane.

Biggest tip I can give, you don't HAVE to be in the spec for that artifact to do the quest. While I managed to do the Frost quest in Frost spec with a non-artifact weapon, this portion of the arcane quest killed me in arcane spec, so I went back to fire. Like many others said, I was to the point of having no gear, having to port out, and come back and start over.

The second time around, I had learned a lot from the early stages, but I STILL died on the Nexus Prince. My tips for the earlier stages echo those that have come before, so let's focus on what I learned from the Nexus Prince.

I finally went frost, with Ebonchill, and got it like no one's business.

First tip: Pop slowfall as the dragon drops you onto the platform. Why take unnecessary damage?

Second tip: Pop frost orb, icy veins, and mirror images right after you land. Let your mirrors and water elemental do most of the work while you keep yourself alive.

Third tip: Pop Time Warp and any other defensive cooldowns you have. Burn them all, it's okay.

Also, if you get knocked off the side, it sucks, but it doesn't get you killed.

Healing potions are useful, BEYOND useful, really, even though you can only use one.

I completed this as a level 109 frost mage. I had no problem until the hallway with the damaging attacks. Just take your time, and heal up between encounters - there's no reason to rush. You can target and attack mobs on the far side of the purple swirly bars - don't blink across and aggro all of them at once like I did, cause you'll die. Just avoid the round sporadic damage areas, take out the mobs one at a time, and blink through the purple swirly bars. If you try to run thru them, they'll throw you up in the air and you'll take a good bit of damage when you land. On Nexus Prince Bilaal, use all your damage cd's at pull, and stay as close to him as you can. When gravity is pulling you toward the outer edge, keep running at him and shooting ice lance. You can get underneath him, and the gravity won't bother you. On Stage 7, just avoid the orbs and get in the domes, use the extra button, do this 3x, and kill the freed orbs. Win!

I don't know why everyone was saying it was difficult. 105 Fire Mage. Did it on my first try, without even going below half health on any of the encounters. Maybe I am missing the difficulty of it?

For final stage when u see the Staff,
dont run into it yet, just run inside 3 arcane domes in the area and use the Quest Item that appears there,
(when you are inside then no need to worry about getting damage)

After several failed attempts I found out the main thing:

DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS BELOW LEVEL 100!

There I said it. If you are like me and plan to do this once you are level 98 and can start Legion quest, DO NOT FALL INTO TEMPTATION.
Go back to your garrison, buy the 20% XP booster potions from your quartermaster and go to Nagrand and level to 100.
Seriously.
Once I was a fresh level 100 this was a breeze.

Many thanks to all the posters in this thread for their tireless, close reading of this quest and helpful comments. Mine didn't work out quite that way. Some mechanics worked the way they were described, some others didn't. Some of my Arcane's spells worked sometimes; other times they didn't. Sometimes Blink didn't work at all and of course if you log/log, you need to start all over again like an all-night showing of the Edge of Tomorrow. Sometimes the healing potion worked (with a reduced effect) and sometimes it didn't have any effect at all. Of course every time you die, you lose all buffs except for flasks; probably the only consistent thing about the whole event.

Nevertheless, you slog away an almost endless number of times and some things kind of work some of the time, maybe. On the tenth or eleventh time, I got lucky with whatever-its-name is. We joke about the designers having a sarcastic sense of humor and it's at warp speed in this quest. I found this one about twice as hard as the DK, Feral or Afflock, which are the only ones I've done ahead of Arcane.

I really like this expansion. It's creative, with interesting mechanics, clever (occasionally) dialogue, great visuals and the whole Artifact concept is (to me) original and engaging. But the only thing I can say about this quest is that it was none of the above. It was like a cold, rainy day in boot camp. It was like getting fired from your first job because of something somebody else did. It was like your prom date bailing out at the last minute to go to a frat party. It was like discovering, many years later, that your high school sweetheart was boinking everyone else in the class but you. It wasn't any fun. Of course you have to do it if you want to continue as a mage. I put it off (after the first pass) until 102 but I don't think it would have made any difference. If you're not manically dedicated to advancing your mage through a cartoon Hell designed by disgruntled former DMV employees, don't even bother with this one.

Took this slow on my lvl 100 arcane mage. Read all the comments. Watched several videos. Fail after fail after fail, even after trying umpteen times to follow different times in different ways. I'm having some serious trouble, and need more help than ya'll are offering. I would LOVE to get be able to see something else before I blow through all my levels ONLY doing the Nexus for a stupid weapon.

Got anything else for tips? I could certainly use them. I was HOPING to enjoy this expansion more than WoD, which was crap.

I didn't have any issues with Bilaal, just stay out of stuff and don't get blown off. I had way more issues with the miniboss elemental earlier on, which I died to once and almost died to again. Your best bet is to kite it; he does the most damage to you when he's meleeing you, and as a mage, you can kite pretty well. Just use slow to slow him and ice floes (talent) to be able to cast while moving. When he stops to do his arcane balls or whatever, pop your cds and burst him down.

Also, more generally: make use of spellsteal. It's hella useful. There are two different spells you can spellsteal in this scenario, one that gives you a massive damage and crit boost and one that gives you probably the biggest haste boost I've ever seen (it was pretty absurd, especially once I popped berserking). Interrupt stuff, too, but don't interrupt EVERYTHING. Things that make your enemies stand in one spot are useful, since they usually do less damage to you that way than when they melee you.

Try not to aggro multiple mobs.

After YEARS of using this site, I decided to make an account just to share some helpful (and shameful) advice for this! I kept wiping like crazy and was getting really put off getting this artifact. I'd already gotten frost so switching to Arcane was a bit difficult to convert to. But.. I was determined!

I stocked up on Ancient Healing Potion before heading in and I wasn't all that keen on taking a TON of damage again, but for the first part I just accepted it until I got Azuregos to join me in the fight. Step 1: take out all the beginning mobs in your way of freeing the dragon. (for me, this meant dying at least once during the fight with the 3 mobs around him)

Moving on to the elemental Echo of Aluneth, I did a VERY shameful, BUT EFFECTIVE, tactic. I let him attack and once he did I let Azuregos take the aggro. Immediately running to a side of him - putting myself out of the way of the Arcane Barrage he fires off and taking 0 damage from him at all. Since Azuregos is INCAPABLE of dying I just let him do all the work until EoA cast his ice block. Then I hit him with all the abilities of Arcane power. (including summoning the arcane familiar)

Once the ice block stopped, I would stop, but my familiar and Azuregos would continue firing. Arcane Barrage would fire again and I wouldn't need to move or dodge at all since I was near the wall and not taking aggro. Another ice block later and we downed him. Moving on you can put on Greater Invisibility and let Azuregos pull the two mobs that have now spawned guarding the next area, if you're like me and not prepared for Arcane - makes taking damage easier since you'll be taking virtually none. Help down them when you're ready.

LASTLY: Nexus-Prince Bilaal I did a horrible job managing with my arcane. I thought.. let's just try a work-around. So I activated my Frost spec and went in after wiping the first time as arcane. As soon as the dragon drops you, run to the bridge (hug the perimeter and don't aggro yet). I summoned my Water Elemental and told it to attack. Once he did Nexus-Prince Bilaal pulled me towards him (not attacking.. just his reflex move) and I blinked back to the bridge. Here I used Ray of Frost to down a good chunk of health - now pulling aggro. I then spammed Ice Lance before being pulled up again and using Comet Storm. Blinked back to the bridge and used Frozen Orb before being pulled to him AGAIN. At this point I used Ice Block to heal. Once out I used Ice Barrier, Comet Storm and then finally spammed Ice Lance until he was down. This was super quick, super easy!

And for the scrolls... I attacked nothing and just ran dome to dome dropping scrolls. Hope this helps someone! It's a little shameful.. but it's got a successful ending :)

Loved all the comments. Some real useful advice. Just a quick question to y'all? Did anyone else run the vault using Frost Spec? I did and found it amazingly fast and easy. I only switched to Arcane at the end to get the whole "look at me with this big, glowy stick," graphics. I used Frost because on of the persistent issues throughout the comments was mobility. As we all know, Arcane isn't exactly known for it's ability to keep you out of harm's way while trying to cast a spell or two. At most you are reduced to trying to rely on Arcane Blast to come off cd, just to damage the mob. I tried Frost spec because of it's amazing ability to let you move around AND still cast damaging spells. And also, the whole cast-and-forget Blizzard was nice. It was surprisingly easy to down the major mobs, and even the boss at the end. I used mirror image on the major mobs, which really helped down them fast. I was totally dependent on using frost orb, ice lance, etc. and frost bolt when possible. The use of ice nova was nice for the melee chaps, as well as teleport ability. Mainly, though, it was all about ice lance and the ability to keep running that made it all so easy. Once I got to the Prince, I popped Time Warp, mirror image, and cast frost bolt when possible, kept blizzard on when I could, used ice lance when I needed to move or it procced. I also waited for glacial spike to proc, since that gave alot of damage. On the big elemental boss right before the price, I found that ray of frost was wonderful to use when the mob stopped to cast arcane barrage (hopefully at the place you were just at, and not still at).

Oh, and the ability to have your water elemental pet out was a nice perk and helped with the multiple mobs. With the mobility issue all but negated, and a wide variety of cast-on-the-run spells, and some rather nice defensive spells, you'll find running all but the very end of this encounter as frost to be extremely quick, easy, and dare I say almost fun?

Done as a lvl 98, ilvl 530 or so, arcane mage

One thing that might help people with this is to stock up on outdated WoD items, like the shieldtronic shield, greater stat flasks, and stat-enhancing foods They're all pretty cheap on the auction house, both the mats and the items themselves. Gunpowder charges from legion engineering work too, for a small chunk of health.

I changed my talents from:

Shimmer > cold snap (extra survivability)
Rune of Power > mirror image (burst)

Also worth mentioning that if you leave the nexus (was stuck on bilaal), the scenario will restart itself completely. After getting the items it was much easier to complete, in almost 1/2 the time as before.
As for Bilaal, I started with Ice Barrier > Time Warp > Arcane Energy>Mirror Images, spamming arcane explosion 4 times for charges, then just following the normal burn rotation. It's mostly an endurance run, so using ice block during nether tempest cycles also.

The final quest of Aluneth quest chain, so long (and annoying). Entrance to the instance located in the basement of The Nexus Tower.

As you entered, free Azuregos from chains, he will join your group.
Wait until he finished his monologue and opened the way
Use blink to pass ground covered with arcane pools
Arcane Abberastions deal really massive damage, try to avoid it (block / shields)
As you reached the Librarium, there will Echo of Aluneth spawn, elemental deals dreadful damage, but doest reset health pool, so you may do few runs, if got killed.
When you done with Echo of Aluneth, reach the rift, Azuregos will take you to Nexus-Prince Bilaal
As you defeated Bilaal, go through the portal that Azuregos opens, place three scrolls under the violet shields (extra button appears when you are under the shield) and take the staff

1. The Nexus Vault (Scenario)
• Use Kalec's Image Crystal, in your inventory to summon the Image of Kalec while standing in the Coldarra, Borean Tundra.
• Accept the quest, The Nexus Vault, from the Image of Kalec.
• Travel to The Nexus instance portal located at 27.5, 26.0 (lowest level).
• Before starting the encounter, it is helpful to be speced into Ice Floes for the level 75 talent.

Stage 1 - The Azure Prisoner
• Travel north to 36.3, 81.7.
• Defeat the Illusory Wyrmling mobs.
• Continue on to 36.3, 74.9.
• Defeat the Scion of Fire.
- - Use Spellsteal when it applies the Dark Empowerment buff on itself.
- - Interrupt Fireball.
• After Scion of Fire is killed, Scion of Ice will attack you.
- - Use Spellsteal when it applies the Dark Empowerment buff on itself.
- - Interrupt Icicle Barrage.
• After Scion of Ice is killed, Scion of Magic will attack you.
- - Use Spellsteal when it applies the Dark Empowerment buff on itself.
- - Interrupt Void Consumption.

Stage 2 - Seeking Answers
• After the Scion of Magic is dead, listen to Azuregos speak before he transforms into human-form.
• Escort Azuregos west to 23.4, 67.5, defeating any mobs you come across.
• Continue northeast, into and through the Hall of Stasis to 22.2, 43.4.
- - Avoid the spots of unstable energy on the ground by walking around, and/or using Blink or Shimmer.
• Travel northeast, to the Librarium, at coords 27.6, 36.7.

Stage 3 - Echoes of Ancient Power
• Defeat the Echo of Aluneth located at 27.6, 39.9 (center of the Librarium).
- - Interrupt Void Consumption.
- - Use Spellsteal when it applies the Quickening buff on itself.
- - When you steal Quickening, cast Arcane Power and Time Warp to burn through its health.

Stage 4 - The Way Out is Through
• Travel northeast to 31.2, 22.1, defeating the Voidtouched Nexus-Stalker and the Voidtouched Channeler who stand in your way.

Stage 5 - Consumed by Void
• Hitch a ride on Azuregos to the other side of the rift.
• As you are crossing the rift, Nexus-Prince Bilaal will transform into a void Ethereum.
• After being dropped off at 57, 21, defeat Nexus-Prince Bilaal.
- - When he casts Force of Gravity (lasts 15 seconds), continue moving toward the center of the platform, otherwise you will be pushed off. Casting Ice Floes, and continuing to DPS during this stage can be helpful.
- - Interrupt Void Consumption.

Stage 6 - Breaking and Binding
• After Nexus-Prince Bilaal dies, Azuregos will land and open a portal to the Nexus Vault.
• Click the Portal to the Nexus Vault.
- - Enter Aegwynn's Crystals of Binding located in the Nexus Vault and click on the Placing Ancient Scroll of Meitre (Extra Action button).
• After Placing Ancient Scroll of Meitre at all three locations, Aluneth's shield will deactivate.

Stage 7 - The Power of Aegwyn (Final Stage)
• Proceed to the center of the platform and click on Aluneth, to claim your artifact.
• Click on the Portal to the Nexus.
• Azuregos will open a portal back to Dalaran, click it to be transported back to Dalaran.
• Once in Dalaran, travel west to the Violet Citadel, located at 32, 49.
• Go inside, and turn in the quest to Archmage Kalec.

This was horrible!

I was a level 110 Frost and bored of the spec so wanted to try Arcane. I died to trash and bosses a million times and my armour was close to breaking and once you leave to repair, the whole scenario resets and you have to do everything all over again. Not good!

I somehow managed to down Echo of Aluneth after a few attempts as his health sticks if you die and you can resume the fight when you respawn but the main boss, Nexus-Prince Bilaal, resets every time you die.

I was seriously frustrated so I tried to go into Frost spec - this worked and I also managed to equip my Ebonchill weapon which made me more powerful (obviously) and I managed to down him in one go even though I had to ice block myself before I died and my elemental did the remaining 2% damage, if I hadn't have changed spec, I would not have been able to do it and would have needed to repair and redo the entire scenario because I'd have died and my gear would have been broken.

Hope this will help others as when you accept the quest it says you can't do it in another spec but I think you can if you change spec once you are inside the scenario.

This bugged for me on my 2nd mage. Azuregos did his spiel about changing into something more comfortable .. and disappeared. I went on ahead, only to find I couldn't access the vault. Only option was to exit and start the whole thing again. *(btw wowhead - some of your adverts using lkqd.net, springeserve and spotmatic something are causing the comments to be almost impossible to type as they are endlessly reloading with every letter typed!)

On the Bilaal phase, after dying a couple of times, as soon as I was dropped off I ran down the ramp as far as I could and still keep him in range. Popped mirror, barrier of course, and opened fire. He pulled me to him, I backed back down the ramp. That seemed to put me out of range of his gravity spell. A few rounds of this and he was down.

Dont do what I did.

I did everything up until stage 6 of the scenario as Frost (my usual spec for old content, purely for the ice lance spam) at level 120. Spec hadn't seemed to matter much for most other Artifact Weapon quests I'd done on other classes. This particular scenario will not progress past Stage 6 unless you're in arcane spec, specifically the quest item ability (the scrolls you place) do not prompt unless you're in arcane. Thankfully you can easily switch specs at this stage, just stand out of the way of the pink orbs.

Also, no need to kill any orbs. Just be arcane spec, walk to the big pink bubbles, and use the scroll ability.

Staff Stage (Pre-Patch Shadowlands)
Level 12 and Arcane, I had to switch specs in order to see the scroll extra action button. I stood under the dome and couldn't figure out what to do next. I switched to fire and the "use scroll" button appeared. I switched back to arcane and finished the quest.

Arcane Mage, at the last stage, blink to get under the domes, once you do an icon will pop up, click it. (heal up before you take off to the next dome).
Run to the next dome, dodging those orbs as best you can. Rinse and repeat 3 times.
Don't bother trying to kill the orbs, they'll just respawn.
As soon as the third scroll is activated the orbs go away and you get to pick up your new lovely staff.

The unstable energy "blankets" on the ground will knock you backward from where you are facing. You can walk backwards in to them and they will launch you over the top if Blink/Shimmer is on cooldown.

After completing the Arcane scenario, the devs are not freaking able to re-code this quest properly (!).
THEY ASKED US TO DO A PORTAL TO ORGRIMMAR INSTEAD USING OUR DALARAN HEARTHSTONE.
