Happy Questing Legionnaires,

This quest gave me a run for my money. At first, I thought there was some class 'trick.' Surely my extremely versatile druid could figure out a way to leap through, take the damage, or otherwise easily bypass this puzzle. That is not the case here. Get that out of your mind right now.

As you probably know, if you're reading this comment, the puzzle is extremely unforgiving. One small slip, not moving quickly enough to a new tile before the previous one turns purple, will result in an instant death. So, from my deaths comes a few hard earned bits of knowledge.

1.) Don't be afraid to go back when there is no path. Stepping onto a blue tile you were just on might actually open up a new path. In fact, it usually does.
2.) We're druids. We love going fast. This is not the place for that! Take your time.
3.) Most importantly; there is no 'set' path. Find the one that works for you.

Otherwise, keep your hands, purses, feet, and voluptuous behinds within the box at all times. It's going to be a bumpy ride!

Starting standing on the first lit up rune, follow this pattern:

Up, Left, Right, Left, Right, Right, Down, Right, Up, Up, Left,
Up, Up, Left, Left, Right, Up, Left, Left, Up, Right,

There is no optimal solution, or at least if there is, there's no need to try to memorize it. I originally thought there was some sequence of runes or some pattern, but it's just a matter of following the blue-glowing runes (of any kind) across to the opposite end from where you start while avoiding the purple runes. If the current options don't move you forward, then move left, right or backward to a different blue-glowing rune and cause a new option to light up. Just move forward as often as you can, and eventually you will get across.

Best way to do this is to take it one step at a time and always step on a light rune.

I believe the pattern is random, but you can always go forward, back, left OR right.

the npcs in this questline are a reference to Dragonlance

In which Caramon Majere ultimately fails to keep his mage brother Raistlin (raist, for short) Majere from using his magic to escape and turn to dark magic

you can see the similarities in their names Karam Magespear (majere is the name of a god of wisdom, i believe) and Raest Magespear is obviously based on Caramon's nickname for Raistlin, "Raist"

we can only hope that this npc doenst become as dangerous as Raistlin was. I believe some official art for Caramon had him looking like the npc (with the winged helm, sword, shield and cape)

As a lock you can soulstone yourself, position yourself as far in as you can and gate across. If you don't make it you can res while pushing forward and you should live.

If for some reason (e.g. entered dungeon queue) you lose where you are meant to be for this quest, quest and questgiver are at 56.61, 27.20. (I was about to start the quest, dungeon queue popped and after the dungeon was finished, wasn't returned to the quest area so had to find it again).

-Die on any ward at the start.
-Release spirit.
-Enter as Ghost.
-Revive on the other end.

Here's a hint on figuring out the 'legit' solution yourself. (i.e. not to corpsewalk it)
The purple runes are obviously lethal, the light blue ones are not, there are 3 types or shapes of rune, lets call them runes A, B and C.
Stepping onto rune A will switch the color of the adjacent runes B, stepping on rune B switches the color of adjacent C runes and obviously C swaps A runes from purple to blue.
With this knowledge you can find your way through the 'maze'. Good luck!

Two notes: Stepping onto a blue rune that would leave you surrounded by 4 purple runes on each side ( you cannot move diagonally) will also kill you (instead of leaving you trapped in a stalemate)
Moving onto a rune that would otherwise leave you with no path to the end ALSO kills you.

I like puzzles and I really wanted to figure this out. But after 5 or 6 deaths, I ended up having to wait 2 minutes just to rez. Two of the deaths were not my fault. I don't know if it was lag, or what, but I was just standing on a tile, and I just keeled over and died without even doing anything (I was actually drawing the grid on a piece of paper at the time). Two other times, I ended up stranded with no adjacent tiles that I could move to. So I ended up coming here for the solution. In short, the penalty is way too high if you don't solve it in 4 tries or fewer. Color me annoyed.

Empowering Trait Questlines
There are seven questlines, providing variation among roles and specializations. You can pick up this quest after earning 35 traits on an artifact weapon. The quest starts from The Broken Shore: Investigating the Legion and Khadgar encourages you to find Mysterious Runebound Scroll from a random mob on the Broken Shore. Which gives you Legion Threat: Suramar and then Legion Threat: The Necromancer

I tried following the directions provided here.

I'm sure they're perfectly accurate and extremely helpful for people far more patient than me.

So I solved it the same way I solved these in Pandaria: corpse-run/cheating.

Save yourself the frustration - it's so much faster and painless.

(*For anyone new to the game, jump out into the maze as far as you can...and promptly die. Then you spirit walk back, but don't resurrect until you're on the other side, safely out of insta-death range.*)

Fly over the runes! Back away from the cave, get on flying mount, allow just enough clearance to fly STRAIGHT in and you can clear all the runes before the dismount.

Why is everything warlock such pure trash nowadays? Who at blizzard is getting away with making this crap content? This kind of quest is pure aids. Do what others have suggested, die and rez on the other side of the runes.

Okay, there are violet runes and one blue. If you step on violet ones - you die immediately.
If you dont want to follow the rules - just die and revive at the opposite side.
When you step on blue rune - there are two runes next to your change color to blue, so move onto another one.
If no runes next to your - get back to another blue rune. The riddle is pretty easy, when you will start, you understand it.

This might be great. It might help at least a little bit if it gave me enough information to reduce the hours that are required to find the starting location. this like so many supposedly helpers assume that we have cheated or have already done the quest once. I had to go to great lengths including exiting the game in order to find out that the quest was on the Broken Isle.

Is there a link to a better area for providing complete information rather that one which assumes that all players have the time to spend 20, 30, or more hours searching azeroth for information which would only take a minute or so to include?

Just DIE and fly the dead bird past the runes and rest there, there is room.

The post from Droz45 did NOT work for me, there was no lit up rune at the position he indicated on the 4th step.

So just die get it over with and fly past the runes and rez, nuff said.

As a warlock I put a demonic gateway up just at the edge of the end of the wards. By using it, I died, but was able to res on the other side. Not the chiquest way, but it gets the job done.

If you have legion flying, you can mount outside, enter the cave, fly over the runes, and land on the other side.

If you cheese it by flying over the runes, make sure you walk in the area of ground just past them to get quest credit. If you don't, the quest will bug out after killing the blue guy and nothing will respawn and you'll have to abandon and re-accept the quest.

Yup. This is it - this is the absolute worst quest in the game, ever.

That fact that we've been jumping through extraneous hoops all expansion long, the Class Hall campaigns, the profession quests, everything with our artifacts has been annoying enough.

This quest actually prevented me from playing the game for a good while. Not fun in the absolute slightest.

Oh, and, you know; you can just die and rez passed all of the runes anyway. So... there's that.

To all those trying to fly/glide(with engineering, not dh, dh's glide is too pitched down), it seems blizz modified the upper part of the cave entrance, so you can't fly further int, hence you might still die 90% of the time. If you're doing the quest in a class that hasn't any kind of teleport, it seems the better way. Pay only one repair, by dying near the other end and rezzing on safe ground. Even with the guides some runes seemed not right, and weren't. Save your time.

After dying epically, repeatedly, I drew out the pattern and then re-read all the posts and started over in the morning. So, for what it's worth, here's my wisdom...

1) There are multiple "right" paths through to the other side, just stay on the blue squares.
2) You can go backwards and, having gotten my self stuck in a corner, found that you can jump to corner blue squares (I was panicked because there were no blue squares on top or sides so figured what did I have to lose, and jumped to the corner).
3) If you get turned around and end up back at the beginning you can just start over (yes, I had to do this once and learned to keep an eye on where the question mark was for orientation).

... or if you die like 5 times like me trying to bypass runes, just mount a flying mount (if you have skills) and enter in the cave flying up - you'll end up on the other side unharmed :P

RUNE HELP: You don't get credit for this unless Karam Magespear comes in the cave with you and fights his brother. At least for me, that didn't happen if I tried to circumvent the runes in any way, such as dying and rezing on the other side. And btw, every time you die, it gives you a countdown timer when you get back to your body, and you have to wait longer and longer to rez. After four or five times, you're waiting a full two minutes for each rez, which is a bit frustrating. Some have listed turn-by-turn which way to go, but that was difficult for me to execute because it happens very fast, and I believe there are multiple solutions. Generally speaking, you start on the one blue rune. Each turn, one or more purple runes will "burn" and turn into a blue rune. The blue runes can stay blue for several turns, but it is also possible for you to step on a blue rune, just to have it zap you the next turn. If you see a pair of contiguous purple runes converting, that's a good direction to take, or if you see two runes ahead going in the right direction, that might be good. I went sideways at times, and backtracked, either sideways or (less often) back to a previous row. There is a youtube video by Nobbel87, and it's called "The Story of Twisted Twin - Patch 7.2 Artifact Quest ". This > 11 minute video is to meant to explain lore (as he says) but he shows himself doing the runes, starting at 5:40. While I was waiting my two minutes to rez (several times), I spent the time watching that segment of his video. :) Though it might take you a few times, I believe you will get the hang of it, and succeed. Wow, you can totally cheese this easily. Just cast slowfall on yourself, then mount up, and go to the top arch of the cave entrance, then just fly forward tilting slightly upward if you can. You'll land on the other side with plenty of space to spare, and...you're done. I'm a bit shocked that blizz overlooked this...

Never step on a purple tile, only BLUE.

Never step diagonally.

Just move forward when you can, sideways when you can't.

For warlocks, get as far as you can before you get annoyed... then Demonic Gateway to the other side, you'll die.. then res on the other side :)

Probably the most dirty way to complete this is to walk straight to the right, past the Felfire tm* wall, and go to the other side of the tunnel - the puzzle will be flagged completed, then just go back and pass it like an op. Yes, we all know you are a genious.. ;)

Yet another stupid time wasting quest. I recently cam back from the Pandarian expansion now catching up to the latest to BFA. The Draenor expansion was good ... but the Legion expansion is the biggest piece of crap Blizz have produced. Nothing but time wasting BS that irritates the %^&* out of people. SERIOUSLY considering skipping it all and just finish the Zandalar region. Just hope Shadowlands isnt as crap as Legion.

Easy solution, no need to die/repeat whatever.

Just jump as far to the middle as you can. Die.

Then resurrect yourself past the wards. You'll save a lot of gold.

You can fly over the entire puzzle if you're high enough level to fly. Fly into the cave from the outside as high as you can into the opening of the cave, you should easily get launched across the runes if you get dismounted early. 👍

Getting over the runes was the easy part - just go one step at a time, straight lines only and only stepping on blue squares (even if you have to go back on yourself). The ? (presumably lvl 60+) mobs on the other side were what got me every time. Gave up in the end, will go back when I ding 60 to see if it's any easier!

@ any warlocks: Use Soulstone on yourself, then Demonic Gateway past the puzzle. When you die, use soulstone to recover and you're past the puzzle. :D

The pattern with 1k likes did not work for me. So after my 3rd death, I just rezzed after I crossed the runes and so bypassed them and was able to continue the quest.

Description
