I remember when DKs had an ability like this in early WotLK maybe other stuff on the tier is more appealing

This is a rather subpar talent, the mob it spawns starts off at least 20-25yards away from its target along with its 2 rune cost and its CD it is not currently worth taking.

Despite what the tooltip says, it doesn't actually reanimate the corpse of players or NPCs. It tries to spawn a zombie 20 yards away from the target in a random direction. if there is something in the way after the direction is chosen, it'll spawn the zombie closer to them. i.e. if they're standing against a wall, there's a ~50% chance the zombie will spawn on them and insta-explode. they're slow, so they're best used on casters who prefer to stand still, like priest or warlocks. they're vulnerable to aoe, have very low health, and despawn without exploding when killed, so you can't use them in the middle of giant fights, you have to aim the casters or hunters in the backline. most people don't know what to expect from the zombies so they don't avoid them or try to cleave them.

after testing though, this talent does suck. the main problem is it generates no RP, which completely messes up your rune regeneration and dps, to the point where its weaker than just nuking the enemy most of the time, even if all the zombies connect. i enjoy summoning hordes of minions, but i tried it against a prot paladin who knew what they did, and he just blew them all up with his avenger's shield and the occasional judgement.

Just an update as of patch 8.3, this ability has the exact same cost and RP generation as Scourge Strike: costs 1 rune, generates 10 RP. Has a 40 yard range, instant cast, no cooldown, and the zombies will retarget a new enemy when their current target dies. You can do a legit damage rotation indefinitely without ever being in melee range. The only thing you miss is your auto-attack damage (and sudden doom procs).

Zombies hold off on exploding if their target is immune (pally bubble or ice block) which can be comical if that target doesn't get the heck out of dodge once their immunity expires.

Important note: the spell does NOT require you to face your target in order to cast. It's really pretty amazing to chains of ice a rogue and then just run away with death's advance while zombie bombs are exploding behind you. If he stops to attack them or fan of knives, that's energy down the drain for when he catches up. So in 1v1 it forces your opponent to use resources beating up zombies intead of you (while your DoT and cooldowns are doing solid damage) or else they have to take significant damage. In group play, it's very chaotic for people to notice and keep killing your zombies since they spawn in randomly and you can target swap in an instant. All in all it's a very fun talent if you always wanted to play a Necromancer class in WoW. It's chaotic, it has good burst, good sustain, it has a counterable weakness but it feels fun to try and play around it.

I'm not going to claim this ability is or isn't viable in rated PvP since idk, my Death Knight hit max level about a week ago and still iLvl 430 without any of the right azerite traits and only 30 corruption. Despite this being the very end of the expansion and everyone else running around with overpowered corruption/essences and iLvl 475 (which makes a HUGE difference) in random battlegrounds I'm consistently around 2nd/3rd on both damage dealt and killing blows, with Details addon saying that my zombie explosions make up 40% of my damage output. It's nice to not worry about keeping track of festering wounds (except for summoning Apocalypse) and to just go ham on the zombies.

I kinda wish they'd let it be a raiding talent even if it was sub-par dps, but that's probably asking too much of blizz since that'd make it essentially a 4th spec (a ranged death knight).

This spell is incredibly fun. Put on your maldraxxus necromancer transmog!

Besides that I did find some real usability in arena against pillar players and players who lean heavily into line of sight.

If they are focussed enough to click each zombies and pop them or if they are cleave-happy, save the ability for another time.

I did manage kite someone to death though using chains ice and summoning a ton of these!
