Vaguely interesting note: While doing Shadow Vault Decree, Ufrang will be in conversation with an aide. One of the things mentioned is how his champion recently lost in Valhalas and that they should quickly find a replacement.

He doesn't even seem to care that his champion is now Vargul. Nice guy.

For anyone else who is having the same problem as I did; The Circle of Suffering where you are supposed to place Bethod's Sword is the round room to the south-west of the cave, not the pit just outside.
It would have been more clear if Blizzard had made two error messages, one that said "Requires Circle of Suffering" and another that said "Requires Thane Ilskar be present and that he and his Champions not be engaged in battle." in stead of just the latter..

The questgiver is inside the Underhalls. The entrance to the Underhalls is at 32,32. After you enter go down the first hall and then go left to find Bethod. Then go straight across and down the staircase and you will see the circle of suffering on the side.

I dont know if i was the only one with this bug, but.
I started the event, killed Volgur, and all the npc's in the room despawned, including Thane Illskar.
*EDIT* worked 2nd time i did it, i might have killed Volgur too fast first time, i dont know.

QUEST COMPLETION:

when you get the quest from the guy, turn a 180, walk out of his room, down one set of stairs, and go straight thru the door you see.

the circle of suffering is 'in the big house', not 'outside'

From the quest giver, turn around and go down one flight of stairs. Go straight (SW) into the big room - Illskar is across the room from you.

I'm guessing you need to be friendly with the Ebon Blade to get this quest? Or is there some other pre-req?

bugged for me the first time i tried , the thane dissapeared as soon as i had killed his champions. what a sissy...

(i believe it bugged because somebody else threw the sword at the same time as me)

Still bugs out as of patch 3.1

Thane will occasionally despawn during the event forcing you to start the event over.

Accepted the quest, ran south west, down a pair of stairs and into 'The Circle of Suffering'. Thane Illskar is standing by a pair of chairs but whenever I try to throw the sword I get nothing but the "Requires Thane Illskar be present and that he and his companions not be engaged in battle." pop-up and nothing happens. Am I the only one?

Here is what I did to complete the quest:

- Stand 5yd from Thane Illskar and start the quest

- Quickly move over to Volgur before he charges, otherwise you will need to repeat the quest.
- Kite/Pull Volgur to Brita and kill him standing at Brita's feet.
- Kill Brita where she stands.
- Kill Thane.

Other ways are possible, I am sure... But this was the only way I was able to complete it, as trying many others inevitably failed.

Want to comment that this quest is not always fatally bugged. I had no issues, and I basically stood in one place to cast while the mobs charged... granted I'm on a lock & had my vw out, so perhaps the vw meeting the mobs in the middle of their charge may have prevented the bug from kicking in.

I had to do it 4 times before Illskar decided he wouldn't despawn. Blizz, get these bugs sorted out!

You have to be standing in the middle of the circle to start the event. You will get "Requires Thane...etc" error message if you stand anywhere else.

After trying every solution posted above to try to circumvent the NPC despawning bug, the quest still glitched for me.
The only thing that seems to work is persistence. I kept at it, placing Bethod's Sword in random points within The Circle of Suffering, until the NPC despawn glitch did not occur.

F!@# you, yet again, Blizzard. Their time-sinks = more $$$.

You have to be in the middle or close to the middle of the ring for the quest to work. I kept throwing Bethod's Sword when I was right up close to Thane and he'd keep on despawning after I'd kill Volgur, so you have to be in the middle of the ring when you throw the challenge for Thane not to despawn. Hope this helps others who are still having trouble with this bug.

Thank you Wowhead! Had another player in front of me, waited a decent interval but kept getting the two error messages no matter how close I was to Thane and thought maybe it was bugged from the 1st player.. But yes go to the CENTER of the pit and throw down the guantlet (Yeah sword I know, poetic license :) )

Bethod Feigr in The Underhalls wants you to throw down his sword to challenge Thane Illskar and then kill him in The Circle of Suffering.

Description

I've been praying to The Lady of the Sword for one to come and strike down my enemy. Thane Illskar must pay for what he did to me!

I was the champion of Thane Ufrang the Mighty. During my fight for ascendance in Valhalas, Illskar sabotaged me with dark magic, causing me to lose and be reduced to this.

The thane and his champions can be found below in The Circle of Suffering. Challenge him on my behalf. Defeat him.

Make him know the suffering that I know!
