STV does have a high concentration of Firefins pools, but on PvP servers, standing in one spot with your back to the woods is a guaranteed way to get ganked. The amount of time wasted walking back to your corpse is not worth the amount of FF's. mommyclz is right about Stonetalon in the oil spill's, and their are a lot of em, 99% of the time you will pull a FF. At lvl 40, fish a oil spill till it dissipates and mount to the next one. This is lowbie land so you wont have to be on guard. I got 2 stacks (40 FF's) in an hour and got 3 waves from lvl 2x hordies.

Firefin Snapper schools also appear in Silverpine Forest near the wrecked boat - I don't know if you can fish them when there isn't a school present.

The best place I found for these was the northern coast of Stranglethorn Vale. Schools of these were literally spawning on top of each other. (Also an excellent place for Oily Blackmouth Schools)

Just done same as last post -- fished 100 Fish in STV, The Savage Coast.

Results:

58 x Raw rockscale cod
16 x Raw spotted yellowtail
15 x Firefin Snapper
11 x Oily blackmouth

So percentage wise its around 13 - 15% taking both attempts into account.

But then you also need to account for you fishing skill level as well.

Found a new location in Desolace 35-30.. there are 30-31 lvl Slitherblade Sorceresses, Warriors and Nagas around.. Firefin Snapper droprate is 38% app.

As of Cat i went to fish for these from the oily pools in Stonetalon,once there i found the oily pools replaced by pools of Greater Sagefish ,it would appear the oily pools no longer exist in the lumber camp.

Stranglethorn Vale is the best place to farm these. I also managed to fish up the chest containing the consumable that teaches you how to track fish, which is a nice bonus if you're farming these for your alchemist and fish for other professions like cooking as well.

This fish is an excellent alchemy leveling source. Farm this fish for Fire Oil, which goes green in 165, then you can easily do Elixir of Firepower with your mats. The elixir turns green in 185, so you can just level up your alchemy from 130 to 185 with this combo :)

I caught these in the open ocean of "The Forbidding Sea" (between Hinterlands and EPL). Looks to be somewhere between 15-25% droprate. Also found Rockscale Cod, Stonescale Eels, Summer Bass (imagine Winter Squid will be available during fall/winter), Big Mouth Clams, Spotted Yellowtail, etc, so it might be a good place to fish to get a bunch of the Swamp of Sorrows/Wetlands/etc requirements for Oceanographer.

I'm surprised this hasn't been mentioned yet, but I have a teeny suspicion that Oily Blackmouth schools (at least some of them) in Darkshore seem to share a spawn spot with Firefin Snapper schools. I've been farming the Blackmouths to make the free action potion and i've been noticing that when I loop back to the start of the pool spawn spots in Darkshore, I'm coming across a lot more Firefin Snapper Schools and not as many Blackmouth schools. The only way to confirm this is to fish up the firefin snappers to see what spawns in those locations.

I'll edit this post as I continue to fish, but based on current observation, there are a few Blackmouth schools that share spots with Firefin Snapper schools (at least in Darkshore). I can't speak for the other zones since I don't farm in those areas, so if anyone has any insight on spawn sharing in other zones, just feel free to reply to my comment!

These can be fished @ the dock at the end of the new Darkmoon Faire Island (when the monthly faire is in town). There is not a pool of 'em, but if you fish in the open water on the right ramp (but probably anywhere there), you can fish up a bunch. And you might also manage to fish up a Sea Pony while you are at it.

Best place I've found for Horde to catch Firefin and Oily Blackmouth is at the Zoram'gar Outpost on the Western edge of Ashenvale. I've gotten 6 in a row of both types here at times.

So one day I was bored and actually wanted to see how often I could catch firefins and blackmouths... So here is what I caught after 20 minutes of fishing on the Menethil docks:

29% - Blackmouths: 12
9% - Firefins: 4
62% - Other: 26
Total Fish: 42

This was with my fishing level effectively around 170
(skill was 120 + nightcrawlers)

So unless someone knows of a better place for firefins, I'd say it'll take you quite a while to make significant amounts of fire oil.

Just as a side-note, Oily Blackmouths were going for about 2 gold per 10 when I checked the AH. Which means if I sat there and fished for an hour or so I could make a nice round 10 gold between the firefins and the blackmouths.

In Menethil Harbor, between Deepwater Tavern and the old Osprey shipwreck (the shipwreck a bit southeast on the map) ... I found a school of Firefin snapper.

I was working on the Morbent Fel quest for the ingots and saw a school of red fish swimming around.

As soon as I saw it, I jumped on shore, equipped my rod and fished away. I must have gotten 8 or 9 Firefin Snappers before the school eventually left.

One way to see the school from above the water is there will be a circle on the top of the water ... sort of like a disturbance of something swimming beneath it. That's a good marker to look for. Try to get your bobber to land in or around the circle for best catching results!

There were also several schools of Oily Blackmouth fish around the other shipwrecks in the area too.

With 1.9, you can now find schools of Firefin Snappers in Cragpool Lake west of the loggers in Stonetalon Mountains. But... it's not just a school of fish, it's an "oil spill", complete with a black goo and a barrel floating in it.

WHenever I need some snappers, or some money I always take my Horse to Dustwhallow Marsh. Start at the graveyard near Theramore, and walk along the beach till Ratchet. Many spots there, and almost no competition, like in STV

I don't know if it's any different on your servers... but my little secret sweet spot for Finefins and Blackmouths are in Desolace. If you just run the coast at Shadowprey Village (horde) then when your done farming there... go north to the next open coast line.. there's about 5 or 6 more schools there.

By the time you're done farming one area, you can go back to the other and it's replinished!

Confirmed

This is the best place to get firefins, also watertight chests when you cast into the floating debris. Go up and down the river there and you will get 20+ stack in no time.

Went fishing in Stonehale mountains and caught 34 in 40 minutes with a lure on. As well as a bunch of greens from the floating wreckage. Just start at the top of the rover and make your way south. By the time your done the top ones respawn. Expect to get 3-5 on average from each pool with a low of 2 and a high of 7. Goodluck :)

Just got done spending 1 hour farming for Firefin Snappers in Windshear Crag, Stonetalon Mt. Payout was 48 Firefin Snappers, and some stranglekelp. Just follow the pool of water and keep hitting the oil spills. Pretty much every cast i put in came up with one. No oily blackmouths which surprised me. Started fishing skill at 84+50(nightcrawler) and ended at 131+50.

Havent tried Shadowprey village coast which i hear is great also, but for low lvls who need the firefin for Alch then i think Windshear Crag is the place to be. Happy Fishing.

instead of standing in one place fishing, i started walking north on the west coast of stranglethorn vale, looking for schools of firefin.

to my suprise these schools was plentyfull

1 hour later i had over 60 firefinns, 20 blackmouts and almost 40 stranglekelp.
from floating wreckage i got boxes wich gave me 11 green items to sell, bolts of mageweave/silk and rune cloth, and a book that taught me the "find fish"-skill.
this skill is a tracking skill that makes all schools and wreckage apear on the minimap, making them easy to see.

if your looking for firefin snapper or blackmouths i recommend doing this.

(was 305 fishing skill when i started, didnt need any lures and such)

The best place I have found by far is in the Windshear Crag in Stonetalon Mts. It requires fishing of 55 but there are oil spills all along the little creek that flows down from the big lake. Lots of Firefin there.

I have found while fishing in Stonetalon Mountains in both Blackwolf River and Cragpool Lake, which are listed with the highest drop rate percentage, that you have to fish in the Oil Spills only. That is the only place I have caught them there.

I got these really early! When you're questing around the north edge of the Stonetalon Mountains, where millions of freakin Venture Co Loggers and Deforesters are, there are often oil spills in the river- aka schools of Firefin Snapper.

I found three oil spills randomly while I was questing and fished them all. Oil spill = Firefin school

Menethil harbor is a good place if you also need Oily Blackmouths. I fished for about 45 minutes on the coast north of the cemetery and caught 18 firefins and 22 blackmouth. Also several chests had 5 bolts of woolen cloth, 1 heavy leather, 1 Heavy Blasting powder, and 6 Rumsey Rum Ales. If your a herbalist, you'll probably get over 20 stranglekelp. The key is to look for the schools or for the floating debris. Good luck! I think it's a great spot.

Blackwolf River is great for Firefin snapper. I am a alchemist on my druid and this is the best place I found to fish for Firefin Snapper. The drop rate is good, only tip I have is you need to fish the oil berrals that are floating in the river. You may still catch the Firefin snappers in the river away from the oil barrels, but the drop rate is much better around the berrals. I got 40 fish in about 10 mins.

I went to Windshear craig in Stonetalon mt. and it was amazing. For about 20 minutes of fishing i got about 50 Firefins. I started at the skinny end of the River and worked my way to the lake then back down and back up again.

Firefin Snappers are used by alchemists to create Fire Oil.

Another great place to find schools of these fish is at Shadowprey village, in Desolace. Just follow the coastline south of the village and numerous schools of the fish spawn at a quite decent rate!

There are sparse schools of firefins in Southshore. If you keep re-casting until you drop the line right into one, you get a 99% chance of catching one. Most schools last for about 3 each before they disappear but whatch for the Merlocs, they don't like you stealing their fish.

I went north from Southshore and got a total of 21 firefins in less than half an hour.

Have fished for firefin and oily in several places. Without doubt, the docks in Menethil is the best....I took 3 toons from under 140 to 225 here, and the oily came roughly 1` in 3 catches, and the firefin came roughly 1 for each 2 oily caught. This by actual count.

If you're looking for Firefins and Oily Blackmouths, the best place to fish them all day from one spot is Booty Bay. Sit anywhere in the bay and fish. I have a 37 warlock with a 300 artisan fishing skill and got 10 firefins and 7 blackmouths in about 15 minutes there.

Hi,

I was reading the posts on this site and went to menethil harbour to fish. I was there for a little over an hour and fished 100 oily blackmouths and 40 fire fins. My fishing skill is at 150 and I used fishing baubles that added +75 to +100 skill.

I don't know if this will be much help to any of you but I thought I'd share. It seemed pretty successful for the oily blackmouths but the fire fins were a little bit more rare to catch.

I am a lower level under 20 horde. I have trouble fishing from booty bay at level 100 with a 50 and 75 lure. Are their any horde locations with good drops for these?

I went to Southshore last night around 8pm EST. I found that on the Eastern Strand there were lots of Firefin Snapper schools while on the Wesetern Strand there were lots of Oily Blackmouth schools. You guys should try it out, I hope it works as well for you as it did for me. Happy fishing.

It appears that if one fishes near the naga on the beach at southshore, you can fish up one every ten minutes, or every fifteen or so fish, I was there for two hours and came away with 4 of them, enough to make 1 potion of Firepower... Hmmm I guess I'll have to try Booty Bay

Yeah, this guy doesn't sell 2/3 the resources displayed here. Major problem when it comes to 100% accuracy. I spent 10 mins out of my way to get here and learned the hard way not to depend on this site. Any reason for the bad update? I wonder if allakhazam.com has a dump code to retrieve data from Blizzards SQL server. Please don't tell me you guys do this manually! Well, I'm off to another site where I know for a fact their info is updated every 24 hours and noted. I don't recommend this site to anyone who has to fly across worlds to have a resource based on their info as of this minute. Hope you guys get it together then I'll be back. What a shame. I really like this place, too. :(

something strange happens with their drop rate (or it's totally random ofc). I fished tons on the dock of horde village in Desolace while doing my 225+ fishing q. I mean 15+ of each in less than 2 hrs and thinking I got the perfect spot I went back again some day later only to get 2-3 in 30 mins... They're pretty thin in AH and when they do appear they cost a lot...

If you go to the very north-eastern tip of Darkshore, you will come to the edge of the Veiled Sea. I had to swim to get to this point. I started fishing from a rock outcroping just past the deep water(when your swimming, you'll see what I'm talking about) with a fishing skill of 110 and no lure. I caught 3 firefins in the first 10 minutes, but no more untill I reached skill lvl 125 where I caught another 4 in 10 minutes. After that I was able to catch one more for about every 8 - 10 minutes of fishing. In total I caught 11 firefins and 5 oily blackscales in 45 minutes time.

Booty Bay is by far the best place to catch them. In about 2 hours fishing with a 225 skill and +100 lure I caught 17 of them and another 10 Oily Blackmouths. These fish went for a lot in the AH, too.

Since no one's mentioned it. Try the Oil Spills in Stonetalon. The spills consistently have Firefins and sometimes you'll find wreckage that contains boxes with goodies.

Just found these in Booty Bay on the pier near the Wharfmaster at level 30, with a skill of 106 using a +100 lure.

They were few and far between..about 3 in 15 mins of fishing.

I don't know if this is true for anyone else. I look on the AH and there are people with starting bids for these things (stack of 20) at 1g and 2g buyout. I am only trying to sell them for 1g buyout now because they weren't getting bought and they still aren't. I put them up every day and nobody buys them...

Outside of grom'gol camp and at the docks in descolace i got about 17-20 in les then 15 minutes, try the schools of firefins and blackmouths, the crates give u nice stuff sometimes to and the rumsyrum u get sells good to.. dont fish outside of schools it'll take u 10 times the time...

If you have low level but you want to hook them, you can go to Stontalon Mountains and there in Cragpool Lake and Blackwolf river. There is a lot of them. You have to fish the schools!

Go in Stonetalon Mountains. Go there in Windshear crag (east) and look for oil spills along the Blackwolf river. If u start from the lake in the north to the end of the river, u should find at least 5 schools, including wreckages.

There's a place in Stranglethorn where I plopped down to fish (starting, I had 129 fishing skill + 75 from the shiny bauble). I caught 15 Firefin Snappers (and 15 Oily Blackmouths) in 40 minutes; about one Firefin every 2m40s. My haul:

80 - Other - 72%
15 - Firefin Snapper - 14%
15 - Oily Blackmouth - 14%

While Stranglethorn Vale is listed as the highest drop rate zone, I decided to fly to Wetlands to spend an hour leveling (from 180 to 215 during my time there) as it was much closer to Ironforge. The results:

134 Raw Rainbow Fin Albacore (~65.4%)
38 Oily Blackmouth (~18.5%)
31 Firefin Snapper (~15.1%)
2 Waterlogged Crate (miscellaneous engineering materials)

That works out to roughly one catch every 18 seconds, on average. The listed 16% rate for Firefin Snapper versus my result was pretty close. If the type of "trash fish" matters, STV is better because of Raw Rockscale Cod and Raw Spotted Yellowtail drops.

I caught a ton like 24+ Firefin in about 30 mins in Stontalon. Thats waaaay more then any other area I tried plus its low level and you dont have to worry about pvp to much there.

WOTLK-Classic - Fished for 2 hours in Wetlands at around 3AM server-time:

157 Oily Blackmouth (26%)
381 Rainbow Fin Albacore (63%)
63 Firefin Snapper (10%)

El's Fishing site claims Wetlands has a Oily Blackmouth drop chance of 30% but this seems slightly inaccurate.

On Classic SOD- if you're alliance, I think Wetlands ocean coast open water fishing is probably your best bet to get both Firefin Snapper and Oily Blackmouth in relatively efficient numbers. I got about twice as much blackmouth as firefins. I also tried in Stranglethorn (booty bay fishing off the docks) and got about the same amount of each, overall less per time. Hillsbrad ocean fishing off Southshore dock may be about the same %'s as Wetlands.
