This might be good for resto PvP specc aswell. Since they took Feral Charge from us, they give a Last stand instead.

Resto druids in arena often shift to bear form just to negate mana burns/drains-and to use Feral Charge. Since FC is lower on the Feral tree now, Resto druids can use Survival Instincts instead. Better, imo.

Can you use this in a form and then shift out to caster form to get some heals on yourself while still having the +30% max health? If so, this would also be an amazing ability for soloing.

this is a very very nice skill - id be low on health in a BG -ooooo Survival instincts is off CD and bang id have gone up enough to pop on FR and then survive the battle.

this makes me love the feral tree so much more

Just a question, and it might be obvious, but I'm wondering what happens if you happen to be in a battle, pop Survival Instincts, and when the battle is over you're down to minimal health. If SI pops off, will you die? Does it remove the amount of health you were buffed regardless of current health? Keep in mind, I have never used this spell, just got it, and wondering about it.

You will never be killed by expiering abilities or items that increases your maximum health.
Upon expiration it will remove your 30% health increase regardless of how much that is at the time when it expires, should you have less than 30%health you will be reduced to 1%hp.
This will also heals you for 30% health, for example if you use this while having 20%health you will end up having 50%.
In PvE this is amazing, in PvP it's good for what it does, but it's neglective effect is that should you drop below 30% while this is active you have no chance of surviving when those 20seconds is over unless you are in bear and have Frenzied Regeneration ready. - This is if you don't have a healer with you, something you will have in PvE.
It should be used with caution and preferably used before you are near low hp in PvP, in PvE it is used to save yourself from dieing - Just make sure your healer(s) know you have used it.
Check Last Stand for more information as Survival Instincts is a direct(other than the Cat/Bearform requirement and name) copy of that ability.

This talent can either be a life saver or a life taker. If we are talking about situations in which you have a healer taking care of you, then it's definitely a life saver. Why? Cause when you see that you are taking or better, about to take, too much damage, you pop it and give the healer the time to save you. Just let him know you've used it so he will expect the subtraction of health also. If you are the healer and have gone also a bit feral then it's gonna most probably be a life taker. When you shift out of the form needed for this talent (either bear or cat) to heal yourself, you lose the 30% extra life down to a minimum of 1% which is 1 hit away from death.
So, to be plain, use this only in cases where you have a healer or in cases where you need to stay alive just a bit longer. Additionally it could be used to make skills that benefit from your health pool work better, but the only one that works like that is Frenzied Regeneration. So a nice help for your healer and/or yourself would be to use a combo of Survival Instincts + Frenzied Regneration.

Yeah, but if you drop below 30% hp with this up, you'd be dead if you didn't have it up. For example, if you're on 20% and lose 20% health, you're dead. If you're on 20% and pop this, then lose 20% health, you're still alive for however long this ability (or your extra hp) lasts. The extra time it buys you between when you drop below 30% and when you die is the whole point of this ability, and for that it's good in any situation where you're almost dead.

The real negative effect of this is that when you lose that 30% hp, you potentially lose the benefit of some of the healing that's been done on you - if you have 10% hp and your healer heals you up to 30%, that extra 20% will be lost when the ability runs out, just as if it had never been cast.

Not any longer. As of patch 3.0.8 you keep the bonus health even in caster form, but you can only cast it in a Feral form. Patch 3.1 will let you pop it in Moonkin form as well.

This will never kill you, but if the bonus health is more than your current total, when it's gone it will leave you at 1 health.

Useful as a sort of temporary heal. When in instances, it'd be good to make a macro such as this.

/cast Survival Instincts
/rw Casting Survival Instincts, heal me quickly.

/RW usually attracts more attention, and works in both parties in raids (only works in raids if you are the leader or have an assist spot)

For soloing, this can help too. This buff will NOT kill you if you have less health left when the buff wears off than it gave you (EG if you had 3000 health, used it and got 4000 total, and it wore off when you were at 500). However, you will probably be killed the next hit. So simply kill the enemy you're soloing within 20 seconds and you should be fine. Or you could use this buff, morph into caster/tree of life form, and then heal yourself.

I've tried the following, with 30k HP at bear form, I used this ability and became 43.8k HP. I dueled someone and asked them to stop when I'm at 30k HP. After Survival Instincts worn off, I was left with 17k HP. It's beneficial HP will always be lost from your current HP.

If you get SI in a PvP resto spec, when popping SI and a BM trinket in full Furious Kodohide, you will have ~35k HP (with no stamina stacking on gear), and can then change back to Tree Form. You're an angry red tree for the duration too. Kinda cool. Going Bear to activate it is the major weakness, but if you can pull that off 35k HP is normally enough to soak up most classes burst combos. The strength of it is you can gain the extra health while silenced.

I know that ImpBarkskin/FeralChange is not a viable spec for high rated resto arena, but it is extremely fun and certainly has the element of surprise. It works very well in BGs where you often have no peel available, and have plenty of room to manoeuvre. Particularly good in pug BGs. In a premade you're better off with a Wild Growth spec.

Just to clear something up:

Survival Instincts does not heal you. The health granted is temporary, so if you rely on it to survive without healing then chances are you're going to die unless your foe dies first.

That said, however, Survival Instincts is best used in conjunction with Frenzied Regeneration, because it does increase the healing DONE to you by FR, as FR is a % of your maximum health. Even though the health bonus of SI is lost when the ability wears off, it doesn't retroactively adjust % healing effects that you received while under its effect, which essentially means that they're healing a higher % relative to your regular maximum health than they would otherwise.

A SI + FR combo, especially when both abilities are glyphed, can almost always restore you nearly to full health (This depends, of course, on the incoming damage). For instance, although the Prophet Skeram is now linked to his mirror images and you can't pull just one anymore, you can still solo him with just 200 NR and no flasks or potions if you use glyphed SI/glyphed FR and a Berserk on his last set of mirrors, because the health gained is so massive.

Another thing I'd like to state: Often, SI is best used as a damage buffer rather than a true Oh Crap button. If you know a large damage spike is incoming (For an example: You're stacked to 4 or 5 on Toravon and a Whiteout is coming, or you're doing Koralon and he's about to Meteor Fist), you can pop SI first and not run the risk of being killed before you get large heals, whereas if you're already at 30% health when you pop it, it gives your healers a much smaller margin to work with. Having played largely kitty recently, I've noticed very few bears use it in this manner.

taken from the tooltip in cata.. saddens me that we lose this.. as i use it liberally in pvp and raid (glyphed ofc with SI and FR). I am now checking to see if the DK's are losing Vamp Blood and Warrior's Last stand.. i know that we have huge HP pools.. but they wanna normalize things.. they should nerf them as well

Edit- just checked the spellbooks for warriors and dks.. they still retain HP boosts.. altho im not sure if the DK spell (Vampiric Blood) received a nerf.. been a while since i was blood tank spec.. now reads 15% rather than the 30% i thought it previously stated

60% damage reduce is far better than more health... and if it stacks with Barskin then it is so much better + what the new glyph will give? more dmg. reduction or the duration? Both would be good...

In a pvp situation when you get bursted, from like paladins, for example, you pop this and they do almost nothing :) let's hope it will not be dispellable like before...

I have ran a couple of test on this. While it is only usable in Bear or Cat form, the buffs effect WILL carry over into caster form. I knew the buff icon did but was not sure if the actual effect would. It does. I have also been testing if it stacks with Barkskin. So far, i do not believe it does. It is more powerful and will override Barkskin.

Is it a bug/glitch that I was able to learn this from a trainer at level 40? I cannot see it in my spellbook thus I cannot use it, and it also does not appear in the list of things I've trained/have yet to train from my trainer. Where did it go?

In Mists this spell is only available to feral (Cat-dps) druids. However it no longer requires you to be in bear or cat form to use it.

Since this is also a Bear form button, that's off GCD, you can cast a number of instants (rejuvenation, remove corruption, Motw, innervate etc) and pop right back into bear form within a fraction of a second.

As of MoP this spell no longer gives you a 30% HP increase, but now give you 50% damage reduction for 12 sec with a 3 min cool down.

You can also Glyph this with Charred Glyph, this will reduce the cool down by 60 secs, but will also reduce the duration by 50% (12sec. > 6sec.).

It can also still be used in both Feral & Guardian (cat or bear) forms, but if used out of form it will put you into bear form.

The recharge time of this was dropped to 2 minutes in 6.0.2. Tooltip on this site is showing 3 minutes.

The visual effect of this spell has changed. It used to cause your entire body to be red for the duration. Now, it causes a ring of four red paws to circle around you. It fades away and returns twice, then the effect ends about when the third is happening.

In 7.0.3 now has 2 charges with 4 minute recharge time per charge. Dual Determination adds an additional charge and reduces recharge time by 15% to 3.4 minutes per charge.
